Botafumeiro (Survival Challenge) by SalieriAAX

BotafumeiroSalieriAAX
Collect benedictions while avoiding the mighty swinging thurible - Botafumeiro.
A very straightforward survival challenge.

In case anyone's interested: The Botafumeiro is a real thurible at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. It's really impressive to watch it being swung. It's not so impressive in my iteration but I hope it provides a brief diversion.

Thanks to Jeffcu28 for testing an early version.

EDIT: Oh yes, I forgot to mention this is my entry for Taffey's contest.

Don't be so modest salieri, this level is brilliant! You'll win a sticker for sure.

Thanks!

Here, by the way, is the real thing, for reference:

I think I now know the origin of the phrase "holy smokes!"

That video is crazy. How do they keep it swinging straight and not punching holes in the cathedral wall? Very impressive and unexpected as well.

Quick question: Is it "Botafumerio" or "Botafumeiro"? It's spelled both ways.

Sorry, yes, it's Botafumeiro. Spanish, innit? I've been to Santiago and seen it live - it's pretty spectacular, the only thing is I don't think the song that accompanies it does the spectacle much justice. They should be hitting the organ much more, maybe with a bit of Saint-Saens.2010-05-24 21:48:00

Ah ok - thanks for the clarification. Even Google didn't seem to know for sure.

I'd love to see that in person. I'd bring a helmet and probably a stuffed animal for comfort as I cowered in fear.

Dam, I want to check this out so badly.

Salieri, I will tell you, I hate survival challenges so much.
Although, you're a great creator, and there may be a difference.
All, I can say is, hopefully you impress me.

Salieri, your art is amazing.

I would have given this five stars and heart just to look at your beautiful version of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral.. When I DL one your levels I know my eyes are in for a treat. Oh, the challenge was a lot of fun too. I played this for around twenty minutes or so and ended up in third place. (edit okay, I got a little obsessed with your level and got the high score).

Good luck in the contest.

Hi, Salieri! You once again amazed me with you art style and very nice environments and characters! I loved this level! It has so many cool small details, so I replayed it several times just to look more carefully. Very good work! My great respect for that! Level mechanics is also great (as I expected from one one the best mechanics master in LBP). So I gave you 5 stars and heart for this work of art! And good luck with contest!2010-05-25 12:05:00

Wow! As of today, my Sackboy is transferring from Shallow Springs Cathedral, because there's an even more beautiful church in LBP! I'm not a big fan of survivals, so I'll just rate on that alone - 5/5!

This level was really great stuff. The level was simple in its gameplay, but was made extremely difficult by the speed of the Botafumeiro. The visuals were great, and I always enjoy looking at the various characters you make. I really liked this level, it had great visuals and great gameplay. I gave you :star::star::star::star::star: and a <32010-05-25 21:34:00

Hey Salieri,

Well I have to say, for a survival challenge, this level was well designed and you left no spot, bare and plain. The idea itself, for a survival challenge, was pretty cool. The simple but exquisite characters made the level seem more full of creativeness. This was a whole lot of fun to play. I even tried my best skills to get the high score, but Velcro beat me by a mile. One point for Velcro, none for TheNerd, and 5 stars and a hear for Salieri. Awesome level dude.

I enjoyed this level very much and now is the time for your feedback.

First off, was the level worth playing? Yes, so much I had to play it twice.
Did this level become challenging? Yes, you got me scared each time I had to let go of that thingy to run across to the other side. The corner editing was fantastic, like always. You sure know how to make your objects round.
You don't leave a rigged layer. The objects were well made.
The sticker work was very unique. It was vivid and pleasing to watch this picturesque level.

The color scheme fit to look like a church. It was tempting to play twice.
I tried to retrieve the number 1 score, but of coarse, it didn't happen.
The church them was unique. I loved your visuals. You never fail to impress me Salieri.
The survival challenge was very simple. Although, since your work of the level looked so awesome, I just couldn't resist playing. Maybe the reasons I don't like much survival level is because they're plain.
Although, you survival challenge was alive. Everything was perfect looking.

The characters impressed me just like your level "Curses!"
You surely impressed me with your creations. In fact it makes me jealous.
Anyways, it's a good thing you made me jealous because now I actually take the time to make everything round and perfect looking. It's an honor to play this level and I will surely be looking forward to play your next levels.

I've had no problems with your level at all. There wasn't much of a story to the level, and therefore, I won't rate you on that. Anyways, this is how I rated you.

Length: N/A
Creativity: 5/5
Corner Editing: 5/5
Theme: 5/5
Story: N/A

Total: 15/15 (PERFECT SCORE) Anyways, you just deserved yourself 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart <3

Until we meet again,

Thanks guys. I haven't checked this thread for days and days - been distracted by Modnation racers. Oops!

I have a problem now. There is a typo in one of the speech bubbles but it seems some people have actually been putting effort in to get high scores. What do I do?

I wouldn't worry about it Sal, unless it will drive you crazy until you fix it. It's to bad you can't make little tweaks on a published level without resetting everything. That is one of my pet peaves with the psp version.2010-06-02 01:26:00

You could probably leave the typo in and play it off as a manner of speech of the character. I doubt too many people will notice anyway.2010-06-02 19:05:00

Funny you should say that, because I was aiming for that **** Van Dyke does cockney monk sound. I guess it worked.

Stunning little level! The amount of detail and care you put into the environment and the fearsome Botafumiero really blew me away. My experience is limited, but this is definitely the coolest survival challenge I've played yet! I had a blast playing this, it's a perfect simple little minigame to play when creator's block suddenly appears

I'll definitely be coming back to get that high score! :star::star::star::star::star:<3

This is for sure one of the best survival challenges ever. A fun challenge enhanced by absolutely impressive visuals. The use of perspective and attention to detail were superb, you could feel the spaciousness, solemnity of that chamber.

It was weird (in a good sense) having a tradition of my country inserted in such a level.

5 stars + heart!

Wow, thanks guys. I'm really glad that you enjoyed it. I was pleased with how it turned out but as I've mentioned before, when your level basically consists of one feature, you never really know if people will actually like it until they've played it. However, it seems now I've had the thumbs up from loads of really good creators so I'm pretty happy ^_^2010-06-09 08:38:00

Hidy Ho Salieri! I just went through a long apology on Jeff's Love Lost Sonata, so I will try to do the shorter version and probably end up going even longer since I am saying all of this I owe you an apology since it has taken so long to leave feedback. You are an awesome friend and have always been great about leaving feedback for me. I couldn't leave feedback when you originally posted since I was a judge for the competition, and then once the competition ended, I was super busy with Poo's High Score Challenge, The Vehicle Triathlon, and finishing up Here and There.

Now that everything has calmed down for a bit, I can finally leave you feedback for this incredible level!

Let me start off by saying that this level really raises the bar for how incredible a level can look. You seemed to have realized that the level was going to be short, so you could just stuff every ounce of amazingness that was possible into the level. It had a 3D-ness to it as well as incredible scenery. I could go on and on about every detail here, but lets just say that I was blown away. Even if you had forgotten to have a challenge and the level was broken, I would have had a hard time not giving this level an excellent rating because it was out of this world how good it looks.

But you also managed to tie a very unique challenge into the level. The idea of running back and forth to grab objects as you are dodging the swinging ax was just awesome. It all worked in so well with the story that you created as well, which just made it all that much better.

You have really created something special with this level, and I highly doubt that anyone well ever top how good this level looks! Great work Salieri
