End of an era

Who else watched the Ashes for Ashes finale? Jesus, it's better than the Life on Mars ending.
ALERT!!! BEFORE YOU READ THIS, THERE ARE SPOILERS, POSSIBLY. PLEASE, MY FRIENDS PROCEED WITH GREAT CARE!!!

Well, it was a very nice, conclusive end. A real credit to what has been one of the best things ever to grace the old set. I have never become so fanatical about a program since Life on Mars or Being Human. The ending of Ashes to Ashes was a great wrap up which certainly didn't leave me with too many questions neither did it leave me feeling dissatisfied.

THIS IS WHERE THE SPOILERS START! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE EPISODE, HALT YOUR EYES HERE!!!

But, being the observant little cookie I am, I saw a bit of almost religious imagery in that final episode (I'm agnostic, just for the record)-
1)At the end, where Alex walks into the pub from Life on Mars (the one Sam Tyler hung out in) signifies, some sort of “copper heaven”, the souls of dead policemen/women pass into some sort of “afterlife”, "eternal paradise", "eternal happiness", whatever term you'd prefer. If you look at it, Sam Tyler almost died by jumping off a building, I think Alex has now died from the bullet and (as revealed in this episode), Shaz died from stabbing, Ray committed suicide and Chris died via shooting. So they all (well, probably Sam Tyler) went to “heaven” when they entered the pub.
2)The world in the 70's and 80's where the poor souls Alex and Sam end up, represents “purgatory”, described in the bible as a “mid-point” between life and passing onto the afterlife. And I see Gene Hunt as the person who looks over the souls that pass through his purgatory. Like Alex, Sam, Shaz, Chris and Ray. This is finalized at the beginning when another, unnamed, unfortunate chappy, staggers into Hunts department wondering what they've done with his office or where his Iphone is. I think this gives a nice feeling of circular structure to the story, with a new lost soul joining Hunts team on his way to “copper heaven”. So, really, Gene is an archangel who saves the souls of these police officers who suffered premature and undeserved demises.
3)However, for every heaven and paradise, there will always be da.mnation and hell. That Keetes chap (I'm not sure I spelt that right) represents a devil figure. As he lures Chris, Shaz and Ray to his department and they stand at the entrance to the lift, he tempts them with “better prospects”. If you look and listen, as they look into the lift they hear horrific voices and the downward passage represents their possible descent into a form of “da,mnation”. As I said, Jim Keetes represents a devil figure, tempting these “souls” in purgatory into "hell". (I'm starting to sound like a bloody preacher here XD).

Of course, as I said, I am not religious but I just had the idea that the director and scriptwriters might have drawn on this kind of Christian allegory for their final episode (kind of appropriate really, considering it's a dramatic, final conclusion to this whole mystery Alex finds herself in). I just thought it was a very interesting way of reading into things. If you had any opinions worth mentioning, by all means, be heard.

Ashes to Ashes was a truly great series, I need to buy the box-set when it comes out so I can relive this epic series! <3

Hehe, please tell me i'm not the only 15 year old into doing this stuff.

I loved Ashes to Ashes and Life on Mars. I agree with the religious thing going on, and it was a good ending... That's not too say i want it to stop, i think gene Hunt is possibly the best character on TV in recent years, love the guy.

I waited the ENTIRE series to see Gene punch Keates as well lol.

You never know though, they could do another series, Philip Glenister (Gene) said he would love to do more, and they showed a new guy stumbling in... Could either be 'completing the circle' or it could be a lead in to a new one...

Either way, it was a good ending to a great series.
