Dwarf Fortress

This is a thread for players to gather and discuss the Bay12 Game Dwarf Fortress (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/).

Some links for your perusal:

DF Official Features (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/features.html)
DF Screenshots (Vanilla version) (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/screens.html)
DF Wiki (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page)
DF Map Archive (DFMA) (http://mkv25.net/dfma/)
DF File Repository (DFFD) (http://dffd.wimbli.com/)

I'll borrow from Tarn Adams, the game's creator, to shortly describe for those of you who may be unfamiliar with the game.

Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a <hilt>dwarven outpost</hilt> or an <hilt>adventurer</hilt> in a randomly generated, persistent world. And remember, losing is fun!

Note: Please keep the conversation on-topic and substantive. Have fun and be nice to each other!

I've tried to get into this, I really have. It's not the graphics or anything that puts me off, it's just.. it's so dense! There's so much. I know losing is fun but I can't even figure out enough to lose.2010-05-20 19:44:00

Yes, this game is not for beginners. Be prepared for lots of planning and reading. The UI is what puts most people off, but I LOVE it.

From the other thread...

Yes it is.

It just provides tile support. If you've seen screenshots of the game with little graphical representations of dwarves, then the user is using a custom tileset. The vanilla game is rendered using nothing but a slightly modified version of the ASCII character set.

You don't use Windows, MacOS or Linux?

I'm getting off-topic.

Perhaps it deserves it's own thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=27331-Dwarf-Fortress) in the General Gaming forum?

No, I do not use Windows, OSX, or linux.

Anyways, it may use ASCII characters, but it isn't technically ASCII... It's a tileset. If I recall correctly the game technically isn't "text", it's graphical characters, which can look like text... Err, ok. This entire thing is just getting confusing XD, never mind.

I would love to play Dwarf Fortress, but it's not easily available for me .

Ironically enough I'm the only other member in the Dwarf Fortress group XD. I figured I would join to show support .

Fixed that for you!

Three's company, eh?

Urk. I know I shouldn't complain about the graphics in this game. But I detest them. I don't know why, but I can't learn what anything is when it's in ASCII, however when I use a different tileset commit the worst of heresies, and blaspheme everywhere, I love this game so much.

I took a break from it 2 years back, and never really got back into it, but still, the fond memories are everywhere.

Also, due to my minor case of OCD, I have to mod my copy of the game to get rid of almost every rock type except for one (I usually use obsidian >.>

I don't do this because it makes the game easier, no! That's rediculous! I do it because when I'm digging through, and all of the sudden the walls change color, it MILDLY IRKS me to no end.

And sometimes it gets so bad I just quit playing in a tantrum. So I play my crippled version, but I love it.

Edit: (I should say that I don't actually get rid of all of the other rocks. I just replace them all with Obsidian that appears in different rock-layers. It's quite nice really.)

Double Edit: (I also go through and remove all veins or clusters that appear only in igneous layers and remove them from igneous layers if they spawn in other places as well.)

The end result of all of this is any source of lava in game is usually surrounded by an entire obsidian mountain, that has nothing in the mountain other than lava and obsidian. Sure, it means I can't mine any gems, or metal, or anything other than obsidian, but it makes me happy, ok? Anyways, what's cooler than a legendary made entirely out of obsidian and bones? (Note to people, you might be wondering why I have bones, if I can't mine anything other than obsidian. It's because there are animals and goblins OUTSIDE of my black volcano, that I kill. I then take their bones. Also, sometimes my dwarves die >.>

I'll just have to buy a lot of metal from my neighbors if I want any armor.

Toady has talked about making an "unreveal" feature when you wall off the edge of the cavern wall it will show black like the unrevealed portions of the screen. I believe you can also achieve this with one of the memory-hacking tools, too.

I would say so... with no metal you have no armor. Or weapons. Unless you tromp around in leather with wooden/bone weapons, and then you're just one step above the elves. Blech! That's a lot of *obsidian mug*'s to trade.

Although, you can make obsidian blades still, can't you?

Yes, I could, if my awesome plan still worked.

I once managed it so that it was perfect, about 14 layers down of pure obsidian, one layer of pure granite. My obsidian tower right in the middle of the area, and 5 spaces from the left border, a river, and five spaces from the left border a magma pipe.

I had a magma moat and everything. Until I accidentally emptied it into my storage room.

That one wasn't fun...

But that's because I didn't actually lose, my Lava moat just slowly emptied into the store room. It didn't even flood, it just had a huge puddle that slowly dried up as it spread, to the point where it wasn't spreading.

I lost a few supplies, but really, I just got so depressed from my beautiful moat flooding, that I gave up on the tower. I mean, seriously, you can't just have a dwarf rush in and wall off a Lava spill, that'd be crazy!

Also, I had three legendary soldiers in that game, a swordsdwarf, an axedwarf and a hammerdwarf.

Two of them got crushed on my drawbridge, the third got thown in the air, and landed in the lava moat >.>

Now THAT, was fun.

It probably has the steepest learning curve of any game I've ever played, just due to the sheer insanity of information that is required to know how to get a complex fortress up and running. Toady's own documentation covers the very basics, but because you spend so much time on the minutia (i.e. assigning individual soldiers some armor) it's not for the weak of stomach. It's probably the most hardcore simulation game I have ever played.

Well, after not playing for a while I got back into it and have a basic fortress up and running but it's quickly going south. My farmers never seem to utilise more than 1/3 of a plot despite there being plenty of seed stocks and I'm running out of food and booze. Also since I don't have a cat or anything my stockpiles are quickly cultivating vermin, ugh - is there any way I can do something about them? I don't think I'll make it through the next winter at this rate...

"He admired a fine Door lately" such austere lives my dwarves lead.

I butcher or cage as many cats as possible... pets be ****ed. you have officially experienced your first catsplosion.

Make sure your farmers are assigned nothing but farming. Also, are your farm plots on the type of soil needed for that specific crop? Underground plots for underground crops, etc.?

I usually scavenge for the first year and make booze and food out of the various veggies I find there, all while building external defenses and training up my military. Only after my defenses are up and food production is up and running do I start doing some serious digging. I also limit my population to under 20(ish) to keep things from getting too far out of control until I'm ready.

Lawl. I remember playing like two years ago.

After a month or two from learning how to play this God difficulty game, I fell in love with it.

....

Now I forgot how to play. ;_;
