Considered a "bad level"

Archive: 14 posts

I am stump on what the community thinks. I hear about these creators making a good level for 20+ hours and I think to myself "well gee, I just don't have that type of time to make a good level." and when I do make a good level it takes me usually an hour or two to complete. Do you think some levels are considered bad or not as good if they dont have 20+ hour efforts in to them? My (former) levels where good but people wouldn't play them as much and they would give my levels low ratings. What can I do to put more time in a level if I think the gameplay works fine and it looks like a pro level with alot of stickers and decorations?2010-05-19 05:51:00

Personally I like to put a few months into a project.2010-05-19 07:49:00

heh
20hrs
hahah!

jk m8, but usually a good detailed well made evel takes months into the makings, not saying ALL levels that don't take that long in the making are bad, just saying most do.
But anyways, good or bad don't depend at all on time creating, but on effort and what's actually created, do you really think people know how long it took to make a level or that would call it good/ bad depending on the building time?

It all depends on the builder and what he can create, that's it.

In other words, quality is quality, no matter how much time in the making.

Ahh, you contradict yourself good sir.

You don't have to finish a level on the same day you start it. You can put some work into it and at the point that you'd normally publish it, just save it and then the next time you come to work on the level, put some more time into that one.

All you have to do is consolidate the time you put in onto one super project, then surely anything you create can't be considered "bad".

I suspect that a problem you might be having is that you may be getting bored creating a level after one sitting. I have been known to do that (except my sittings can last as long as 5-6 hours O.o)

It helps to plan what your going to make first, draw some sketches on paper, that way you always know whats going to come next, stops you getting stumped or bored and helps make the most use of the time you have.

What silver said.

I'm a slow creator, and I like to take my time. Heck, I've spend a week on my current level and all I have is 45 seconds of gameplay. Creating doesn't need to take months, it all depends on whether you truly think it's quality at the end of the day.

A word of advice: After you think you've finished, wait for a few days before you publish and then play it again. See if you still like it. Play it with a friend and get feedback if you have none yourself. I've surprised myself at how I react after a few days of forgetting a level.

Printing out some concept art from the internet regarding your theme can help with design ideas

quality takes time in my opinion.
I've worked on a level for about 2 weeks and I only have 1 minute if gameplay ,lol.
But some creators sketch their levels before making them and can just look at their sketches and create what they see. It will go faster.

Time doesnt matter, and besides not because someone spent like lets say months on one level doesnt mean "wow this guy made this in 2 months! :O, this means this level is great!!!!!".... even if all you do is ride a potatoe down a Dark Matter hill XD, so it all depends on the creator and his sense of imagination, all this talk about time? nah dont get it in your head, you can make a great level in just 1 or 2 days dont ever let anyone tell you the opposite...

And besides i dont think there is such thing as a "Bad Level", if you like what you do? thats it, its what you like to create and if you like it, its great period, however unless your into competition then i guess your aiming so other people like your work, but whatever, dont ever give a bull..... about what bad stuff people say about your creations.

Good thoughts, I might go through and sketch a draft on my level or two and add in and take stuff out. Right now I have been working on a level for about half a week and I still have alot of plans. I just put in the scoreboard but plan on taking it out, considering I still have plenty of room left on my theometer thingy. I might put up a preview once Im all done. The concept is Being the King of Platformers, In the first part I have basic Platformer basics with Flower hill and all of that, then I have wobble platforms kind of designed from the wedding level, then a maze and ect... The final boss is the Collector Machine! But Im going to take that out and build on.2010-05-19 23:02:00

You can consistently get faster when building levels, but regardless of how long it takes, the quality and effort will show in the final product.2010-05-20 00:21:00

It sounds like you're using some MM objects. I would advise you don't
I'd say the best way to ensure quality is to F4F.

I created half of one of my levels in the pace of about 8 hours. That was extremely short for me but apparently my level is very good. Not always longer levels are the only good levels. I don't like to blow myself as a good creator, but I believe I did a good job. You can plan ahead and create alot faster in that way. Sometimes I go to bed and think up and draw ideas and layouts and then hop into create and build the next day. Can go quicker if you do that. But laziness often creeps in with me so I have been slow recently.2010-05-20 17:02:00

I have only one complete and decent level published so far, not many plays or hearts but it actually took me two months to make. And I'm happy even though it's not a popular level.2010-05-20 21:01:00

Ludicium, I'll play your level. It might be that you need to republish it a bit to get more plays.
