Fonts, Do We Really Need Them?

Is it really at all necessary to have some of the fonts we have on this site? Or do we even need fonts at all? After seeing a post that was hard to read because of the font, I asked Aya if he could change it to an easier to read font. But he suggested making a thread about this in Site Feedback (Which is this thread).

Ones such as:

"Impact"

Are hard to read. And I don't see why we can't all just stick to this font?

So, would it be possible to remove fonts all together? If not, at least remove "Impact".



EDIT: The "Impact" font is much worse when used much more. So you can really see what it's like when people use it.

Hum... those fonts are the common fonts for web/HTML use.
Personally, they are not bothering me where they are, and it gives more choices if needed ( I like to use the Arial)

Impact is not the best for little size text, but works for a title or something...

I was just about to do the same thing with Impact. Great when large, annoying when small.

The font options, while underutilized for sure, are like any other tool online. It's as useful as people make them. Knowing how to use them effectively to make your posts more interesting or legible is variable to the user of course. So I don't see a reason to get rid of the option just because they're underused or used badly by some.

If someone's post is hard to read - don't read it. I don't. I figure if it was important enough from them to post, it's their responsibility to make it legible.... must be my inner Graphic Designer snob coming out.		2010-05-18 20:25:00

It's not just the fonts though, it's the colours too. Some people use them wisely, others don't. I'm not sure why though because you only have to preview your post to see if it's easy to read so I guess some don't do that !?		2010-05-18 23:35:00

You kidding? I LOVE IMPACT!

You just have to use the fonts right Sure, typing in impact in size-1 type is probably not going to make people want to read your post. However, fonts like that make a nice title and can be used in plenty of other situations (not just Impact).		2010-05-18 23:39:00

...and you press "reply with quote", just to see the quote, you can see this:

I think I remember using Google Chrome and it did work, now I'm using Mozilla, and it doesn't.

However you can quote something, then change the font yourself, then preview the post.		2010-05-19 00:14:00

You can most definitely use firefox to quote people. I'm doing it right now!

I'm not sure you understood what incinerator was saying. You just click on the "Reply with Quote" button, but don't actually respond... just to read it in the default font in the quote box. What you've suggested after that is exactly what he was getting at, minus the whole preview post thing... it shouldn't be necessary.		2010-05-19 00:20:00

I did click 'Reply with Quote", but the font doesn't change to normal font with code bracketed around it. I think I made a funny misunderstanding.

It means that nothing was different between the two then. Try quoting someone with a smiley in his or her post. You should notice a change then.

I tried it on your post, nothing changes. I'm using Google Chrome but I have Firefox as well, give me a sec and I'll try that.

EDIT: Nope, I'm using Firefox now and it still does nothing. 		2010-05-19 21:19:00

Yeah, latest version of both Firefox and Chrome. And I just tried IE8 (Which took a while ) but still nothing.
