PSP Survival Level Challenge - *** WINNERS ANNOUNCED ***

Archive: 101 posts

And the winners are:

Air Raid by Captain-Rule
This hilarious and entertaining level brings D-day to your driveway. Captain-Rule kept us in stitches while scrambling frantically to prevent the inevitable. I may never wash my car again.

Botafumeiro by SaleriAAX
Stunning visuals and spot-on gameplay converge in the unlikely setting of what appears to be a peaceful, serene cathedral. SalieriAAX continues to knock our socks off with the quality of his wildly entertaining levels. The next thing that knocked our socks off was a giant, swinging thurible.

In Search of Idols by Coxy224
In one fell swoop, Coxy224 has redefined what we all think we know about survival levels. Platform until you die in this one-of-a-kind romp through an abstract (and very spiky) jungle adventure. High score seekers will have an absolute blast with this one.

Love Lost Sonata by jeffcu28
A survival level with an epic story? No, we hadn't seen one before either, and yet here it is. jeffcu28 shows us melancholy done proper in this somber challenge that is equal parts beauty, danger, and fun.

Pork Chop by famouscustard
What do flying pigs, conveyor belts, and electrified droppings have in common? Pork Chop by famouscustard, that's what. This fantastic industrialized adventure had us all on the edge of our seats while wiping away tears of laughter.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the first ever PSP Survival Level Challenge! The objective of this contest is simple:

Create an original Survival Level in LittleBigPlanet PSP.

What's a Survival Level?
A Survival Level is defined by a few simple key elements. To qualify, your level must meet all five of these criteria:
The point of the level is to stay alive as long as possible.
The longer you live, the more points you get (or are able to get).
Death ends the level (usually accomplished by a moving checkpoint).
You must die to end the level.
You have only one life.

Survival Levels almost always become more difficult the longer you play them, but this is not a requirement. Watch this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGojEsArxcI)* for a detailed guide on how to create a survival level.

*This video was created in 2009 by Media Molecule and covers LSP PS3, so most (but not all) aspects of the video hold true for LBP PSP. For example, crushing the level entrance will not work on the PSP.

The Rules Your level must adhere to the five Survival Level criteria described above.
No previously published levels are allowed. All entries must be new creations.
Only one entry is allowed per person.
You may edit and republish your entry as many times as you like, but as of the deadline only the most recently published version of the level will be judged.
You do not need to include any special terms or letters as part of your level name. If you like, you may include "PSPSLC" (PSP Survival Level Challenge)..
No PS3 levels please. This is a PSP-only contest.
If you have previously won a Gold Rare Sticker, you may still enter the contest but just for fun; you will not be able to win another sticker.
This contest is open to all regions.
All levels will be downloaded and played immediately following the the close of the contest.
There is no specific timeline for the judging process, but my goal is to have all judging completed within two or three days. Results will be announced following the close of judging.
Read the disclaimer. Yes, there is a disclaimer. Read it I say or I will send a swarm of angry leprechauns after you!

How do I submit my entry?
Log into the LittleBigWorkshop (http://www.littlebigworkshop.com/) and post your entry in this thread (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/t5/General-Discussion/PSP-Survival-Level-Challenge-Win-a-Superstar-Gold-Rare-Sticker/td-p/252999). Be sure to include the PSN that the level is published under as well as the exact level name. You may also post your entry here, and I strongly recommend that you post it in the PSP Level and Object Showcase (http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?106-PSP-Level-and-Object-Showcase) forum as well. (Don't forget to use F4F (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=22700-Feedback-for-Feedback)!)

The Deadline
The deadline for this contest is 11:59pm JUNE 5TH, 2010 Greenwich Mean Time (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/current-time.htm). Your entry must be received BEFORE MIDNIGHT GMT on the 5th or it will be considered late. For shame!

Where can I find some examples of Survival Levels?
From the Story Mode, check out: Wave Goodbye by The Mystic
Shear Madness by The Mystic
Double Dragons by Emperor Sario
Stamp Collector by Emperor Sario
Monkey Puzzle Tree by The Genie
Roque n Roller by Clock Hans

The Disclaimer
By participating in this contest, you agree that you understand that the judges will make their decisions objectively, fairly, and in an unbiased manner. You also agree that there is no place for whining in an excellent contest such as this one, and any belly-aching or other distasteful behavior will result in public mockery and being pelted with soggy apricots. Finally, by participating you agree that the point of this whole thing, win or lose, is simply to have fun and enjoy yourself. This is, afterall, a video game.

The Judges
Survivorman amazingflyingpoo
Ray Mears Fastbro
Eye of the Tiger Taffey
Heroes vs. Villains ThisIsInsane

Levels will be evaluated against a number of criteria, including originality, playability, visuals, and the always-critical fun factor. Plays, hearts, and rating will have no bearing on how a level is judged.

Why are you doing this?
Why not? Contests are a great way to help push people outside of their comfort zones a bit and try something they haven't done or thought of before. I'm also eager to see what tricks everyone has up their sleeves, and of course I just like seeing the surprising and creative things people come up with. The real reason I'm doing this, however, is that I want to see the LBP PSP community grow, learn, and have fun.

Anything Else?
Nope, that's it. Now run along and get creating already!

I was already making a survival challenge before this, but I already have a sticker.

@ali985 - You will get a PM on littlebigworkshop from the contest host if you win, which will probably ask you to PM AceCreator, the psp community manager, with your region e.g. EU, US. He will then send you a PM saying he has received your message and he will ask for the codes. Be patient as it takes quite a while to process your request. I'd look at your inbox every two days, just to check if it has arrived. Ace Creator should PM you within a maximum of a week and a half with your code. Just use the code on the store and get your sticker! It looks quite snazzy and is in it's own little section, called "Rare" when you turn the menu to "Theme"!

Hmm. Maybe I'll come up with something, but I doubt it. Darn these contests, I want the painful memories gone already! Snow and Slides... *shudder*

In all seriousness, I have some good ideas, but I have no way of knowing how to implement them. I'm just not tech-savvy. Like I said though, don't count me out completely.

Hurray! I am working on an entry to this competition. I don't think I will really have time enough to finish it, but I'll try. I'm crossing over to the dark side, by making a "bomb survival level".

Yeah, I have a hard time not giving them ones when I look at the high scores, even if they're very good. I mean, how dare Play-The-Nerd get something 20 times my score!
:hrmf:

On another note, I've gotten an idea for a challenge, look for Scary Switch Swing soon!

I know how you feel, my level crashed I think. It never froze, but it also never loaded. Weird
But I ditched my old idea and have a new level which I think is better than the first.

Yeah. I have my level finished but it is very difficult to get everything adjusted to make it much more fair. I am probably going to end up doing days of tweaking everything until I find it to be balanced and fun. This is much harder than I thought.2010-05-24 01:53:00

Sorry for the D... uh, (realizes the problems of abbreviating it) the double post, but I'm announcing that I'm not going to submit for this contest. I have two reasons for this:

1. I realized that I don't really care about the sticker itself, just about being recognized. And the best way for that to happen is to work on what I do best - making platformers.

2. Something happened to my bottom arrow button, causing it to no longer work unless a ton of force is put on it. (YES, I know you don't have to use it. But I always use it for menus, such as the popit. It's extremely annoying to not use it to me.) I would normally be able to get it fixed immediately but there's a problem - being grounded, I'm not supposed to have it! So the earliest I can get it fixed is Saturday, when I'm not grounded.

Regardless, good luck to all who enter!

Hahaha! Hilarious Sorry to hear about your D-Pad malfunction... my analog stick has recently decided it wants to go 'left' all the time, which is a major problem in create mode. Here's hoping the warranty is still good.

Ali, I think we can still enter, in the LBUP contest they said stickers would go to 6th place etc. in the event that existing Superstars won.

If anyone needs help testing their levels before entry, I'm happy to play with Betas and offer suggestions. Admittedly I don't have 'Poo's tech skills, but I'm pretty handy at finding bugs/broken bits.

Ali, I think we can still enter, in the LBUP contest they said stickers would go to 6th place etc. in the event that existing Superstars won. This is essentially correct. Put another way, existing sticker winners are exempt from being chosen as one of the top 5. They can still submit just-for-fun entries though (as ali985 has) and are certainly encouraged to do so.

I might enter a just-for-fun entry soon if i can figure out how to make a darned awesome coveyor belt. I've made about 6 different methods and alll of them so far have exploded in my face, just for the hell of it. Oh well, I wish I could be on the Judging panel except i'm not exactly the most well known creator and there are already enough judges to judge a most people in the world on lbp psp world record (you get the point). If you have a PSP 2000, 2001, or 2002 slim model, this is a known issue. The "drifting analog stick" issue can be fixed fairly easily--it simply involves removing the front casing of the PSP, detaching the analog stick module, and wiping the connectors clean (just a damp cloth will do, it's just a wee bit of dust). I bought my PSP used, and I had this problem right from the get-go. After Googling it, it was extremely easy to fix.

Wiggling it about a bit usually works for me. Though your answer sounds a lot simpler.

Good luck to all the entries - those I've played have been wonderful and I intend to catch up on the rest real soon, I'm a bit busy selling all my possessions to buy a ps3 in anticipation of lbp2 2010-06-07 18:36:00

Um, totally on topic and everything here... He used to edit the "News of the World". How could anyone think he's awesome? He's even more despicable than Simon Cowell. Now Taffey, on the other hand, is a fair and generous judge, right? RIGHT??2010-06-07 20:00:00

Coxy, I'm pretty sure Taffey is a boy, and so that kind of rules Amanda out

Surely Taffey's more of an Amanda Holden?famouscustard is right - I'm nothing at all like Amanda... but she's my type alright.

And I'm being compared to Andrew Lloyd Webber? Why.. I've never felt so youthful and vibrant in all my life.

Double post!

After much deliberation and hours of entertaining survival mayhem, the judging panel has arrived at a unanimous decision. In alphabetical order, the five winning levels are:

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to everyone for making this such a successful contest. All of the levels are incredible and we had loads of fun playing all of them.

Wow, thanks so much. Congratulations to all the other winners and to everyone who took part, the quality of the entries was really high across the board, which is why I'm especially delighted to have been picked.

I'd also like to congratulate Taffey on the idea for this contest, encouraging people to produce a short level like a survival challenge instead of a full-length level meant there was so much attention to detail and polish in all of the levels entered - and it meant I was actually able to complete my entry for a change ^_^

Thanks salieri and congrats! I still find your level amazing even after the dozens of times I've played it. It's just really, really fun - easy on the eyes too.

You quite handily secured a spot in the top 5 for yourself and set the bar high for everybody else. Thanks in part to you we only had one bomb survival level!

W00t! I win 500 dollars! Where's my big stinky check?

Really though, this contest was amazing and I'm glad that my headache of a level won. I had a blast playing through all of these levels and can't imagine how I could have won. Now, how do I go about retrieving the big stinky sticker?

I forgot this level was for a sticker.

Because of that, I didn't make an entry.

Congratulations to all of the winners!

I can honestly say that I am impressed with EVERYONE who participated in the competition. I played every competition level many many times (and a lot of you can find me on the leaderboards of their levels), and I really enjoyed playing all of them. I have had the unfortunate experience of playing terrible survival levels on PS3, but all of you have done an incredible job and now the PSP has some GREAT survival challenges.

Great work everyone!

FastBro, you copied my (future) post!!!

Anywho, congratulations to all the winners! You guys definitely deserved the win every single bit! Also, congrats to all the other entries, too. Although they may not have won the contest, they still were a blast to play and I will definitely be playing them again! So congrats to everyone for creating some super-awesome levels. You all have earned my respect, even though you already had it.
