Lemmings/Sandman style level

Archive: 7 posts

I was looking at the Dev diary of the Turbo! pack. I saw a new entry about the bridge builder (check it out, it's pretty cool http://www.littlebigplanet.com/en-us/news/article/turbo_pack_development_diary_9_tanks_a_lot) But then it got me thinking about Lemmings and Sandman where you have to get enough of the lemmings or people to the end of the level or you will lose. The people walk slowly in one direction until they hit a wall and turn around. Along the way to make it a challenge, there are bottomless pits and dangerous falls that will kill the people you have to save. In some cases there will be enemies which you have to kill before they kill the people.

I was thinking on the back plane have the "Bridge Builder" or something similar and on the front plane have the Sack people (lemmings/people) moving slowly via wheels. Between these planes will be a thin plane of glass.

To count the deaths I will have to use an AND switch, so when a person dies, they dissolve and set off one of the counters until they all die or however many are allowed for that level, then you will be killed with gas and sent to the finish.

I'm going to treat this as a survival challenge with multiple rounds, once you are at the end of one, you can collect your points for the round then move to the next area.

I know I have way too many levels started and not finished at the moment but I need something fresh to give me a bit more creativeness so I can carry on with my other stuff.

So... what do you think?

This sounds like a GREAT idea, and I would love to help in any way that I can. I need to look into this bridge builder before I can say much more though 2010-05-18 04:11:00

Great idea! I will wait for your level based on it! I had similar ideas before Turbo pack, but after some thinking over I put it off. I am very glad that someone will try to create something similar.2010-05-18 09:35:00

Thanks for your encouragement. I will definitely start this soon. I need to plan some stuff first though, like how the people would die. I was thinking, perhaps if I made a block with wheels, that travels at the same speed underneath the playing ground, I could add a magnetic switch which would trigger if a person falls below the the playing ground. Then this would trigger an emitter for the points at the end of the round and trigger the first piston of the AND switch. I could always cover this all up with a thin piece of material.2010-05-18 11:43:00

Don't use the Turbo Pack bridge builder. It'll fit alot better, and show that you put the effort in, if you make your own. On the Lemmings, I'd maybe use creature wheels and brains instead, so that if they hit another object they change direction(like in the real game). Sounds good though2010-05-18 13:47:00

I was only using that bridge builder as a base idea. I would make my own for the level. Also, thanks for the changing directions idea. That should add a bit extra to the level.2010-05-18 17:50:00

I really like this idea - it has the potential for being a very fun level.

My one suggestion for the Sackboys/lemmings you need to save is to cover the brains, legs, etc. with a thin piece of material in the front layer. In other words, make a small block with the creature brain and legs, and glue a larger thin piece of material with your stickers/graphics. This will make for a much cleaner overall look.
