Mirror tool

Archive: 13 posts

I would like to see an easy way to make objects symmetrical. You could make an object, then flip it, then stick it together, but you'll have a visible line, as you've got two shapes stuck together.

I suggest a mirror tool, which can mirror the corners of a single shape, making it easy to create perfectly symmetrical shapes, such as arches.

Eh?

You mean like pressing R3?

If not i don't get it...

(EDIT: Yet again i walk onto the PSP area, ignorant of my whereabouts, so please ignore me )

I love it - this would also help with cutting into a circle, one of the main times I wish I had it.2010-05-17 20:23:00

After creating half of your profile and doing the copy/mirror...you just need to add a block of the same material that overlaps the two halves it joins them and removes the seam. HTH

Edit: I assume that the PSP/PS3 versions work the same in this situation?!?

Nope, the PSP can't merge shapes of the same material together, neither can you cut holes into shapes.

Ouch, I'd be asking for that instead! 2010-05-17 22:30:00

I'm pretty sure there's technical reasons for not being able to cut holes into shapes. SCEE Cambridge would probably have to rewrite a lot of code to get this working.2010-05-17 23:31:00

Support for inner loops may require some code changes...but supporting simple polygon booleans (union/difference) shouldn't take too much effort (I've had to write this stuff...LBP just has closed shapes, no arcs/nurbs so it's the easiest case). It would also be easy to ignore a difference operation if one shape is completely contained within the other if they don't want to support holes.

I really shouldn't have posted to a PSP thread since I didn't get LBP for mine...but I didn't pay attention initiallly.

Just some advice from someone in the software industry...don't try to guess at how the software works or ask for a feature that isn't exactly what you want...just state the problem/what you are trying to achieve and let the developers worry about how to implement it. I think you'll also have better luck requesting a feature in the PS3 version rather than a new one. HTH

Both the 'mirror tool' idea and the ability to cut holes in shapes would be sweet... very sweet.

edit: or failing that, a circle brush with a hole in at least!

A boolean subtraction would be an fairly simple calculation to "punch" a hole into a mesh, so it's not like the PSP can't handle it.2010-05-19 08:21:00

Good point. Get on it Cambridge!

Booleans are ok, but I find that they require a bit of preparation before they can be fully enjoyed. What I mean is, booleans are just way too chewy off of the shelf. Gently tenderizing them first, or perhaps marinating them in polygons, really helps make them more palatable. In my opinion this also serves to enhance their mild flavor.

Once you've prepped your booleans, be sure to let them rest for at least 3 or 4 clock cycles before cooking. Heat your CPU to around 300 mHz and lightly sear your booleans on each side; serve freshly calculated with a side of logic sauce and a tall glass of nurb juice.

...You never cease to make me smile, Taffey.
