Reputation Update

Archive: 34 posts

Today we updated the way the reputation system functions. The goal with this update was to focus the scope of the system so that it worked more simply and easily, and without the confusion that often followed a positive/negative rep from someone with significant reputation power.

So, what changes have we made? Only two, but they're big ones:

We've completely removed the ability to directly rep someone. No longer can you drastically effect someone's reputation (positively or negatively) if you happen to wield that kind of reputation power.
We've doubled the reputation concentration of the Thanks system, making it a much more usable and lively system than it once was. Since it will now be the only way you can effect someone's rep, we want to encourage use of the system wherever possible.

Think of this as a complete rebranding of the reputation system. Those little green bars under your avatar? Instead of thinking of them as a summary of your overall quality as a member, we want you to see them as a general representation of your helpfulness, quantified - in essence, the more helpful you are (and more often you're helpful), the more green bars you'll build up.

As a result, we have rescaled the reputation required to earn each new gem. We want these to be seen as valuable, as something to be cherished - they're not simply throwaway items like they once were. They do get more and more difficult to pick up, but as a result they become more valuable. If you'll note, under this new system, even I don't have every reputation gem. It's definitely possible, but it's not easy by any stretch.

Essentially, we want to motivate you guys to do things that will earn the gratitude of others. Not only will it improve your profile, it will improve the atmosphere of our entire forum - more people being helpful means more people being helped, and you can't go wrong with that.

Guess it's impossible to retroactively remove all rep that isn't from thanks, eh? Ah well, guess this will have to do :kz:

Very good change. Especially since you would also have to had removed neg rep, which is a bonus, but yeah. Yep. Bravo.

Niiiice, CC.

We considered that, but we decided to leave reputation where it is. It's not too far off from where we'd like it to be anyway, and we can change the scale to match the numbers if we need to (and we did).

How did you, CC, lose reputation if you said current reputation is unchanged?

EDIT: I have a question that seems appropriate to ask here. I thought reputation bars rose with every 100 points, but I have over 900 and only have 8 bars. Huh?

After 8 gems, it takes 200 rep point for each gem, or something like that. All I know is it takes more and more points for a new gem over the course.

Interesting...

So... do I have less rep bars then?

EDIT: Nope..

As this thread states, we changed the scale for rep gems. That means that while you might have the same number of reputation points, they don't necessarily earn you the same number of rep gems. The scale is completely different than what it was before in order to accommodate for the changes to the rep system.

This might be an obvious question, but the current green bars and the 'gems' you speak of are the same thing, right??2010-05-18 04:52:00

Thanks, Morgana. I know i sounded really thick asking that but I'd never heard them referred to as 'gems' and I was initially getting a bit excited about the idea of gemstones.. you know, faceted, different shapes or colours for amounts of rep, etc. But I do like the bars. It looks like an EQ and some of us (like your good self) have the volume ramped right up That i can dig.2010-05-18 08:47:00

I hate to see people with bad rep. Really puts you off that person even if they really are great.

This is good news. I like the thanks system.
I have to admit, I did use the negative rep system twice, but those posts really were rude...
But then again, now I think I will report them instead of doing that, which is better for everyone.

I've never used the rep system...I was scared to! I noticed how drastically mine changed just from two positive reps.

Yay, thanks system!

I now have two gems under my name - does that mean that all the Thanks I've received have earned more points each, or that only each Thanks I've received after the update is worth the new amount? Similarly, do the rep points remain the same before and after the update, but the update changes how these points are converted into gems?2010-05-19 13:21:00

I can answer your first question, only each Thanks after the update is worth the new amount.

I believe the answer is yes.

So you have more rep points in terms of the # because the thanks went from +1 to +2, but since they reset at what levels the gems are generated the higher number is now showing gems based on the new levels.

Make sense?

Was each thanks only worth 1 rep point? Wow, I must have been really helpful, becasue I don't think anyone gave me positive rep ...

What was positive and negative rep anyway?

Yea each thanks used to be worth 1 point. Now each thanks is worth 2 points.

Positive/Negaitve rep used to be an option at the bottom of posts. There was a sort of star shaped icon to the left of the report post icon that you could click, then choose "I approve" or "I disaprove" of that particular post, then put a message as to why you liked or disliked it to show the recipient the reason you "rep'd" them. It was a nice, and anonymous I might add, way to show support for extremely helpful, positive or honest posts that, in you mind, deserved more than only one point of rep. The problem, as I understand it, is that people with more rep (more green bars) had a weighted power when giving positive and negative rep. So if you positive rep'd someone it would add a few points, but if I positive rep'd someone it would give a significantly higher number of points since my rep is bigger. So CC has taken out that option and now the only way to rep is through the "Thanks" button.
