Need help with a little wheel logic!

Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section. But I'm currently working on a 2 person level and I'm trying to create a elevator that is raised by a wheel. The wheel is a wheel in a ground that the player runs on, and as the player runs on it, it raises the elevator, if the wheel spins to slow, then the elevator will fall again. I built a prototype with a magnetic switch on the wheel and several keys around the wheel with the switch set to directional and attached to the piston/wench. However, the problem with this was that you could simply balance the wheel to align it with a key that will keep the elevator rising without spinning the wheel. I've seen this done in several levels and I'd like to do it myself. If any of you have a solution I'd be very thankful!
