giant player powerup?

Archive: 18 posts

I was checking out the gameplay videos and was really admiring the customization options for the sackbots, but what caught my attention is the ability to change there size. That got me thinkin', if we can do that to the sackbots why can't we put some section in a level where the player increases in size, like with a powerup. Just think, there is a huge obstacle blocking your sackboys path and you can't get around it, but if one player suddenly became a sack-hulk, he/she can move it for you. I think this sort of thing would really change up the gameplay, Discuss..2010-05-16 16:08:00

Could make a good co-op level element. One player is normal sized while the other is giant and has to move objects and break through doors to allow the smaller sackboy to pass.2010-05-16 16:21:00

Why not just put them in a Sackbot of the desired size?
IYou could do that and even make the sackbot look hulk-alike, i mean the ability to control sackbots IS kinda for those kinds of situations, which is to allow sackboy to do what he can't already, right?

From what they showed, you would most likely just use a sackbot and have the player control it for that entire section. Which raises the question, will there be a power down like for the jet-pack and paintinator? so people don't use sackbot for the entire lvl?2010-05-16 19:02:00

Well, why have a small and/or big power up if you can simply hop into a Sackbot of the desired size? Why does it have to be Sackboy himself? Plus, I think the Sackbot sizes capture the "LittleBigPlanet" feel, whereas if Sackboy were becoming bigger or smaller it would be more like a Mario game. EDIT:lol this post is almost identical to Silverleon's!2010-05-16 23:56:00

I'm sure it would be very doable. You could start the level with the players in control of sackbots. The dcs's can operate via color coded remote control, so when it's time to change a bot's size, all you'd have to do is demit the bot and emit a bigger/smaller one with the same color code to receive the remote control inputs. Assuming we can add emitters to sackbots, you could repeat the process for a fireball-shooting bot and make a near-perfect Super Mario Bros clone. Since Mm mentioned the possibility of making a perfect double jump for bots, it stands to reason that we could do pretty much whatever we want with its jumping ability: you could make it fly like in smb3 with the coon powerup (you flew by repeatedly jumping, didn't you? Never played it myself).

As for putting a dcs on a smaller bot and then riding around on it, I'm pretty sure that will be doable too. I imagine your sackboy will still have physics, though, so he'll be able to bump into things, and his weight might affect the mini-bot's ability to jump (but you can tweak his jump). There may even be a tweak that makes sackboy disappear when he enters a dcs (that's pure speculation, though: Mm hasn't said anything like that, and it may be considered unnecessary since they can operate via remote control).

Dcs's and sackbots are going to give us tons of possibilities. You could make a character with the ability to possess other characters like Abe from Oddworld. You could do a level where you play as a shape shifter/master of disguise who can take out an important enemy character, hide the body, and impersonate him, just like Snake did with Raikov in MGS3.

If you wanted to get REALLY fancy, you could even do a rudimentary camouflage system like MGS3 by demitting/emitting bots in various color schemes. The actual colors would be irrelevant, of course: each bot would have mag keys or something to identify which version of camo he is and you'd have to set up logic for each area that camo can blend into to identify whether he's currently camouflaged. This would be insanely complicated to set up, so you'd probably want to limit it to maybe three or four color schemes and maybe limit the areas it can work in.

you could have simply said

But it would be more logical and smart to have written that.

If you wanna' give someone a hard time for posting a wall of text, might I suggest instead of quoting the entire wall (and thereby defeating the entire point you're trying to make), you can do something like this:

*wall of text*

Shorter and easier to read, makes fun of me in a much more clever way than your attempt, and doesn't repeat everything that was just said one inch up the page.

you could have simply said "WoW you realise you can put a control seat in a sackbot right???"

That wouldn't have answered the question. He asked if it would be possible to change a sackbot's size on the fly, so I explained a method to achieve it (er... fake it). Aaaaaand then I got carried away with other ideas.
