Earthquake stories

Archive: 17 posts

So I'm online playing with Chuck and Joey tonight when Joey types that he's having an earthquake. I checked the USGS website and sure enough Puerto Rico had a 5.8 magnitude earthquake right when we were playing. Also showed that there have been quite a few in Puerto Rico lately. Got me thinking has anyone here been in an earthquake and do you have stories to share with those of us who haven't experienced one?

Here's the link to the site I checked. It's pretty cool and has worldwide earthquakes listed in real time and liked to google maps so you can find out where the epicenters are. It's set for the one in Puerto Rico tonight but you can navigate on the left side of the screen to any worldwide quake.

I died in one yesterday....

Where I live isn't anywhere near plate edges for earthquakes to happen. Very minor tremors might be possible but that is it, and even then there hasen't been any in my time, so it might not even be possible.

I was in one or two (maybe three can't remember). The most notable was during the night. I woke because my bed was shaking and there was quite bit of rattling. I fell asleep again shortly after it was over. Pretty uneventful.

This was in New Zealand.

Well since Aus is smack in the middle of a plate we can never feel the earthquakes we get. At least not where I live anyway.

On the other hand we do get some serious lightning and my god it's the scariest thing I've ever experienced, especially if it strikes at 2:00am and your dead asleep.

We don't have earthquakes in Finland. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing, it would be cool to experience one but still they can be pretty not-so-fun.2010-05-16 12:34:00

Glad you're ok Joey! We had an earthquake a couple years ago here in Indiana. It woke us up very early in the morning from the rumble and the wood creaking in our apartment. An aftershock a day later was quite scary too.2010-05-16 13:55:00

I experienced an earthquake a couple years ago. The 5.3m quake occurred in Illinois, but it was strong enough to feel here in St. Louis. I remember my wife waking me up and in my sleepy daze, I heard dishes rattling in the kitchen. At first, I thought someone was in our apartment, so I jumped out of bed and that's when it really hit. The entire room started to shake and it lasted for about a thirty seconds. The next day, I was working from home and an aftershock hit, causing the entire room to shake again, but only for about 10 seconds this time. Pretty crazy!2010-05-16 14:13:00

Lucky! I've never been in an earthquake. In Pennsylvania, we don't have any natural disasters, just Ben Roethlisberger...2010-05-16 14:35:00

Pennsylvania! Represent.

Yeah, well actually we had that blizzard craziness this past winter, other than that, everything's pretty chill.

3.9 friday night, point huenueme California, was talking to my dad and my sister on the second floor when suddenly it sounded like something crashed into the wall behind me and everything started shaking and luckily i had a view down the hall and i watch it quickly travel down it lol we get earthquakes literally every 5 mins but the slippery mineral in the San Andres Fault keep pressure from building up to much so they usually aren't noticeable2010-05-16 19:13:00

Well, you all know about the Haiti earthquake, and if you don't you may have some serious problems on paying attention
Anyway, I live right next to Haiti and I was doing homework, all peace and quiet, and my mom screams "EARTHQUAKE!!!" and runs downstairs. I look at the door and it's shaking so hard it closes. I was freaking out, as you can imagine, when I got up I fell down right away and basically dragged myself to the stairs. By the time I got downstairs the quake was over... I think that may be the scariest thing anyone could ever experience...

I live in the Pacific Northwest, which can be notoriously earthquake-prone, but so far in 6 years, I have had no experiences. I'm ready though. I'm super ready. I'm going to walk into a cafe while it's happening and pretend that nothing's going on, and try to order my food and act bewildered when people scream at me about the "earthquake".

"What's that? Does it have meat in it? I don't see it on the menu!" I'll yell back.

"NO you idiot! WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EARTHQUAKE!"

"Politically??"

And so on.
