Playing a PS3 online without a wireless router.

Archive: 16 posts

For reasons I'm not going to waste your time with, I refuse to buy a wireless router for my PC. I've actually not got my own PS3 online yet and I was wondering if anyone here plays theirs with a wired connection?

As you may have guessed, I'm not particularly tech-savvy and I was wondering what my options might be? (Got to hurry, LBP is right round the corner! :O)

With my Wii, I use a Wi-fi USB dongle that I just plug into my PC and my Wii can pick up on and run a connection to the PC. Is there anything like that available for PS3?

What's a switch? How would that work?

Ah, I didn't know that. That sounds simple enough, cheers.

Yeah I unplug my Ethernet cable from my PC and attach a different one to my PS3. I tried a million different ways to get a wireless connection but they all failed, but wired connections work just as well.2008-10-06 16:29:00

A wired connection is faster and much more stable anyway. Just plug it in (plug it in )2008-10-06 16:31:00

I use both wireless and wired. Wired has a better connection, but there's a long wire laying on the floor from my room to the computer room. When my parents have guests over I roll it up and switch to wireless. So, they both have their pros and cons.2008-10-06 16:59:00

I use wired myself anyway, straight into the router, it shares it with the PC, 360 and laptop occasionally. I do have wireless, but the connection is awful in the UK and you need every last bit of speed you can get!2008-10-07 11:26:00

I have a new question somewhat related to this topic so I thought I'd ask it here instead of making a whole new thread.

My current router is very basic and doesn't have an ethernet port meaning my PSTriple can't go online yet. If I were to buy a better router with an ethernet port would I have to do tons of installations, re-installations etc. or can I literally just swap the old router out for the new one and go?

I have a ethernet cable. But I also have a 4 way switch so I can run the pc, ps3 and (someone, not going to say incase LBPC gets delayed, lol joking) knows what else.

Much thanks.

Will.

Get a LinkSys router. You will never look back. They are incredibly reliable, and incredibly easy to hook up. I've done a number of installations of the thing, and it never takes more than fifteen minutes. You pretty much just plug in the router, run a CD to set up the router itself, and it just goes.

So it's not quite as simple as just switching plugs, but it's close.

Also, as others have said before, an ethernet cable plugged in the machine is preferable, as it has better response time (although that's only really noticeable on web browsing) and somewhat faster speed. Plus, you pretty much just plug in the cable and the machine sets it all up itself. But I've been using wireless the entire time I've had mine, and it works just great. I haven't had any lag gaming online due to it. And you might be able to get marginally better ping with wired, but it really doesn't matter that much. It's really more of your internet itself.

Edit: Also, unfortunately that USB wireless thing you've been talking about...isn't going to cut it. It just doesn't have the strength to support the online functions of the PS3. Not without lots of hitches along the way, at least.

Yeah, I established that wired is the way to go for me. I just bought a better model of the same brand router I'm using now off ebay, I'm just wondering if switching them around will be easy or a complete hassle.
