Is there a realistic place in LBP for 1 life levels?

Archive: 19 posts

Because i've been getting a lot of nasty messages in the comments section of my latest level, The 2099 Aerostation Project : Mars, where people have been saying that it's impossible to complete and that i'm just a play whore and trying to convince people not to play it and that I should splash it with check points.

The weird thing is, I didn't get this abuse the last time I published an Aerostation level...and basically nothing has changed!

I'm pretty sure it's just because people have become jaded by little kids spamming really crappy 1 life levels and they clog up the cool pages but I think that it's unfair that this reflects on me
I did work hard on my level (as well all do here at LBPC) making sure it flowed properly, getting lots of people to play it to see if it's intuitive enough and to see if they trip up in the same spots as each other. Still I get hate.

Do you guys think that there is any point to 1 life levels or is it just an unnecessary difficulty ramper?

Is the Survival-Racer genre a worthy level type or is it just inferior to either a survival or race level?

Personally, I think that it evokes a degree of satisfaction when you can nail a series of challenges one after the other.

It is. It definetely is.
I played your fisrt one and after some tries, managed to reach the scoreaboard with a broad smile of satisfaction painted on my face.
Just the other day, I played the mars one, and I have to admit that I couldnt finish it, but the truth is that I only gave it 2 tries. However, I left pretty happy of how long had I done it before dying, and I'm sure I'll return to finally get it done.
This is quite a unique genre you're pulling, asbestos, and I absolutely suuport you when it comes to doing these levels.

I have no idea why you would get more complaints this time than the other one, but I'm sure there's no reason to stop producing levels of such quality. I wanna see the Jupiter project already! (;

Hope this isn't referring to my critism. It just didnt seem like the kind of level that should have 1 life to me. I loved the level, but everytime i died, my face changed from to -_-.2010-05-15 02:17:00

thats people for you. Iv actually talked to people that complain about LBP being to hard because you need to ace every level ((and with a buddy for some)) if you want to be able to get every material / costume. Some people just like it when things are given to them. Hence why you see the Unlimited life checkpoint being used more than the normal ones2010-05-15 03:05:00

Haha, no, you weren't being needlessly rude when you messaged me.

I can deal with that fine, because it's just like our difference in opinions, but when people start having proper jabs at me with petty name calling and going out of their way to tell people that my levels ****e and don't play it, then that's a bit different.

Ignore them. Its their fault for playing the level. If done right, 1 life levels can be really cool!2010-05-15 04:46:00

Im probably gonna go back and play it again and try to actually beat it

Anybody calling you names is an immature little kid, i get them everytime i publish a level too. Theres really nothing you can do but laugh at their stupidity.

It's still not nice when you have to go through pages and pages of comments and deleting over half of them :/

There is a place for them but but it depends what sort of level and how difficult it is.

I personally think yours should have checkpoints as it's too much effort to keep going through with only 1 life and keep having to restart. The people who can manage it will be higher up the scoreboard anyway as the rest of us lose points or time every time we die. I've played it once but I have to admit it's the whole 1 life thing that's prevented me from playing it again.

Well, I'm building a level for which I probably will get a lot of abuse. It's not even a single life level. I just used checkpoints very sparingly, made jumps that are almost impossible and some mechanism only work once. Don't think more than 5% will be able to complete it. Even I can't complete it sometimes. ^.^

Oh and it is very dark in places, i.e pitch black.

Edit: This doesn't answer your question at all. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't listen to the comments and build what you like not what other people want.

There's always an audience for the styles we can come up with.
The problem is that since all levels or all genres are all pilled up in the same bunch (cool level pages), there will be a TON of players (wich are not adressed by your level) that will play it and therefore won't like it or get frustrated. Now add to this the general maturity that is extremely low and you get tons of stupid and arrogant comments --- that you should ignore.

Ignore people because the magic of LBP, what's interesting with this game, is what people can come up with and all the different experiences we can live through.

I played it..... it only took me several times to get through the game, and after that it was pretty easy. I absolutely LOVED this level, and tried a number of additional times to get a high score.

You obviously took quite a bit of time building it, and it definately has a place in LittleBigPlanet.

The thing that irritates me is when people decide because a level isn't their cup of tea, they have a right to stomp all over it. There's a place for ALL different types of levels in LittleBigPlanet. It's what keeps the game fun for everyone.

One of the things that may be confusing people is that, unlike some other 1-shot play levels, your level is REFINED. It doesn't really have the look of simple shapes and colors, so people may be a bit irritated that they couldn't finish it.

Ahh this thread has made me feel a lot better, lol, cheers CCubbage for that ^^

It's made me feel determined enough to want to make a 3rd Aerostation level...potentially a TerraStation level...o.O
I wouldn't have felt it was worth it if no one was gonna' appreciate it

Have you ever considered something like a checkpoint button that disables points? I'm not being opinionated there, but saying that might solve the problem.2010-05-17 01:08:00

The other way of doing it would be to have it so theres no race gate unless you disable check points but I think your way would give players a higher point average.

A) I'm gonna check it out, but there shouldn't be anything wrong with just one life, that makes it better and not take "dying" as if it was nothing.

And i'll be sure to give it a go as soon as its published!

As a matter of fact, do you need any Beta testers?

I think that if a level is well constructed and has a decent degree of difficulty, then a 1 life should be the way to go. Sorry your getting critisim for you recent level dude. It's really just the players opinion. I would just ignore the haters bc it's your level and you are the one with the creative control and if you like how your level is, don't compromise just bc others can see eye to eye with you 2010-05-17 20:32:00

OMG, you made a sequel? I really loved the first one, it's one of my favourite race type levels . But anyway, in my opinon 1 life is perfect for a level like that, because finishing the level after respawning several times from a checkpoint just isnt the same as finishing it with a clear run. It's more satisfying. But on another note about the title of this thread, one of my projects is a kind of realistic mystery thriller story level thing in an abandoned base, and im considering putting 1 life only in that, to add to the sense of realism. ie, if you die, the character dies, end of story, you have to restart.2010-05-17 21:59:00
