LBP.me and new publishing/community features - What will happen to LBPCentral?

Archive: 16 posts

We have an inkling of what to expect out of lbp.me and the new community infrastructure for LBP2. But it really has the potential to be a MAJOR game changer, and it's sort of taking the backseat lately to all the speculation about microchips and top-down views. So I'd like to take a minute to ponder the huge changes to the community that are right around the corner due to the new additions, and what they might mean for these forums and others like it.

First some background (you can skip it if you know the drill):

Mm seems to have acknowledged that the web will always be the best way for people to find levels, so rather than fight it by implementing MORE MORE MORE options into the game, they've embraced it by tying the game into this new online hub, lbp.me.

We know that we'll use our PSNs to log into this site. We know that anytime we publish a level, it gets its own page on our profile that we can then share with anyone anywhere and it will include a preview with screenshots. We know we can tag our levels with genre and content tags that will be searchable on the site. Perhaps the biggest option revealed so far is the "queue" - While browsing levels on lbp.me, we'll be able to add them to a playlist which is automatically tied to our game. The next time we boot it up, our playlist will be ready to go.

Now for the speculation bit. What I think we MIGHT see:

This means that nearly every single member of these very forums will likely be an avid user of LBP.me.
When you post a level in the Level Showcase, you'll be able to put a link at the top to add that level to your queue. Anyone else logged into lbp.me will be able to instantly add it right away if they want. Our profiles, our signatures, all will likely become tied to our profiles on lbp.me.

We'll be able to share our playlists with each other through a single simple link. The Spotight Crew, bless their already tired little souls, will be able to include a full playlist with each new spotlight, as well as individual links for each level. Forum users, as long as they're elsewhere signed into lbp.me, will need only click these links to have them instantly ready and waiting for them when they boot up the game.

The more spotlighted levels you play, the more levels from those same creators will show up in your "stream" - your custom-tailored "cool levels" page. This will also include certain levels HEARTED (or starred) by those same creators.

We may also just see the creation of an LBPCentral user with a few interesting levels published: "Level Spotlight - January to May" for example - This will be the "hub" of spotlighted levels. Each room will represent a different spotlight, complete with badges that lead into the appropriate levels.

What I'm REALLY interested in knowing is how much lbp.me will allow for the creation of miniature communities or groups.
It seems that lbp.me is essentially "facebook" for LittleBigPlanet. This might mean groups, wall postings, etc. For example, a group that decides to review and post reviews of levels may have a presence. The lbpland.com forums may have a group representing them.

And of course, if such a thing is possible, LBPCentral.com is surely to have a "presence" on lbp.me as well. If this happens, you can bet that the creator spotlight will probably become one of the go-to sources of great levels for everyone that uses it. Which is both great and terrifying.

Great because we can essentially replace the current "cool levels" with LBPCentral's own "cool levels". There may be a far greater audience for levels coming out of this site.

Terrifying because suddenly the level spotlight will become one of the most coveted positions in the LBP universe. Giant influxes of new users vying for a spot on the pedestal, a nearly impossible load of levels for the crew to go through each week, a userbase that rapidly balloons with tons of new users, many of which just posting their level in the showcase and hoping for a spotlight and moving on.

The poor, poor spotlight crew. I send my condolences through time for the loss of your sanity if such things come to pass.

-------

Just trying to look ahead here. The game's changing, and that's going to have huge repercussions for the community. We don't have all the details yet, but there are plenty of indications that all of this will be possible.

Any thoughts/fears/excitement/ideas about these new features?

Rearlly liking this idea although it means i will never get any work done in the office. I hope that there will be compatibility between the Game page and the level on LBP2, so for instance all comments, highscores, plays etc etc ingame will be noted on the level/game page. Would be cool being able to check how well recieved your level is doing whilst away from the PS3.2010-05-14 11:35:00

I recall hearing in an interview that this exact feature is included. Comments, hearts, stars, number of plays, all of this stuff talks back and forth between the level and its page on the web.
I imagine and hope you'll also be able to do things like check your most recently played levels online to find that ONE you played last night that was so cool.

And yeah, that's another thing to look forward to - a drastic reduction in the amount of work done by office-dwelling LBP gamers.

I hope they look at site like deviantART swap art for levels and we got a winner! Cant see LBPC dying with the strong community here, LBP.me will be a link to LBP2 to make things more easyer.

I hate networking site

At first when I heard about lbp.me I thought it would spell the end for LBPC. But there's tons of potential for this site in the larger community, especially if it has its own presence on lbp.me. Besides, there hasn't been any indication that there will be "forums", per se, or messages, or awesome community run features like the spotlight. LBPC willl no doubt get bigger, with the influx of new players picking up LBP for the first time.

Long live LBPC!

Even if there were forums, I don't see that it would make any difference to LBPC. There are already official forums, and look at them compared to here!

Obviously the spotlight will end up with people largely linking to their LBP.me page in the OP, and it may even be possible to automatically parse some of the info (level name / description etc.) and reproduce it here. I don't know if the enqueuing options are still rumoured, although that would make a massive bonus to the showcase and spotlight (see a level you like, click a button on LBP.me, then next time you are in game it is sitting there in a list for you to play).

How long do we expect before the lbp.me iphone app comes out then?

Anyway idea of level representation of the page is great and if you will be able to submit screenshots/level photos that will be double great, it will be very useful for other LBP communities. IF we have luck they will make APIs for level andp layer information for other sites to use 2010-05-14 16:01:00

I am most excited about this possibility. I advocated to implement something like this (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25132-The-LBPC-Network-Creating-a-place-to-share-the-levels-here-with-the-world) using the current system some time ago. I'm very excited to see what sort of functionality the LBP.ME website will have!

^^ This. I don't see the LBP.me as something that will remove the vitality or importance of this community.

TBH, facebook became crap when it lost any focus or direction of what it was supposed to be and just became a spamfest. Back before it was open to everyone and before they introduced the news feeds and applications etc. etc. At least as far as I'm concerned it was better then.

Basically, a networking site with an actual purpose and tools specific to that purpose will be a lot less annoying than facebook is

"Sackville - Start building your own little big sackfarm now!"
"13 Sackmates think you're a piece of brown cloth! Wanna find out who? Click here!"
"You haven't played together with AngryKid66 for over 2 weeks. Wanna join in?"
"You have just published the 999'999'999th level! CLICK HERE to claim your awesome price!"
You have received a group invite: "5'000 members and I'm gonna undress my sackboy!"

Imagine how great this would be.

Seriously, I think lbp.me will be more of a great addition to the existing community platforms, rather than a replacement. I think of it as a platform that will simplify advertising and sharing of your levels in many ways. It's nice to see that, rather than trying to convince us that PS3 content should only be shared and discussed on PS3, Mm decided to expand their little big universe to PC. The cross-connection between lbp.me and LBP2 itself really sounds promising.

I really wonder whether newly published levels in LBP1 would also be uploaded to lbp.me, or if this only applies to LBP2 creations. I will get LBP2 at its release date anyways, so it doesn't really matter, it's just a question of technical interest.

Anyways, I'm sure that lbpcentral, alongside all other great lbp communities out there, will grow to new heights with the assistance of lbp.me. The large masses of possible new users who wanna get a chance to enter the community spotlight might pose a problem at first, but I'm sure you'll quickly get some system up to prevent this from taking overhand.

I'm really looking forward to this!
The "Queue" feature will be very practical, and the fact that we will be able to see our levels evolution (plays, hearts, comments...) without turning on the PS3 is very cool!

I'm wondering if we wil be able to edit things directly in the site though... like editing the level description, changing and deleting pictures for example..?

Facebook spam on LBP.me? No, thank you.

Think basic social media updates, more like:

Jan 12 8:31 PM schm078 has published a new level "Up to Snuff!"! Click here to add it to your queue!I think it's fair speculate that you'll be able to do all sorts of things, such as add friends, share levels, customize your profile page, etc., but nothing as annoying specific as the examples above.

I do suspect that there will be an option to share updates on LBP.me with popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.

The amount of expections and hyping caused by the lbp.me in me is very big. But put it in that way, and considering I've been active in here for just a few days by now, it DOES put me in big sympathy with the Creator Spotlight Crew when evert signle below-mediocre egocentric creator sees the Spotlight Playlist and the amount of publicity with it, they want their levels in... with slim to nothing chances, but they don't realize it... and thinking of this cozy community to grow with 50,000 new Sackies (30,000 of them being creators mentioned before...) would make it lose a fragment of it's charm. GO ahead, call me Anti-n00bist (which I think i'm no, would be great if some of them would grow out of their "h4h plz plz i needs teh platium trohy" phase and evlove to challenge CompherMC and all the other übercreators out there ), but thats what I think. With a lot of irrelevant stuff (in brackets, like these, I like these... etc etc) that make you, the unsuspecting reader, loose the point and hate me. THAT was mindflow. 2010-05-15 21:21:00
