Improve the quality of Voice Overs by using a pop filter! HOW TO

Archive: 21 posts

Ok, I can see an annoying problem on the horizon.... crappy VO work! I don't know, but I assume the PS EYE (VO Mic for LBP2) doesn't have amazing sound quality. Low sound quality, and even high quality microphones are suseptable to hard T,S, and P sounds. They will sound like a loud pop instead of the desired sound... So I have made a simple guide for all of you who would like to nip this problem in the butt before the game even ships.

Step one- Get a wire hanger, a nylon sock, and a PS EYE. Done? Ok.

Step two- Unwind the wire hanger so it is a straightish piece of maluable wire. Then proceed to bend it into as close to a perfect circle as you can. Done? Good.

Step three- Stretch the nylon sock over the circle AS TIGHT AS YOU CAN. This is what will filter out all the unwanted sharp P's, T's and S's. All stretched as the picture shows? All righty.

Step four- Mount your PS EYE by bending the hanger around the base of the camera. the filter should be facing the mic (duh) and the mic should be positioned near the center of the filter. leave a 2 or 3 inch gap between the filter and the mic. Done? Then you are good to go son!

IDK if you can do this in LBP 2, but the RockBand mic is superior quality to the PS EYE mic, so this filter could also attatch to the RB mic IF it's compatable. we will see when LBP2 hits shelves this fall!

Hopefully this will help with any future sound quality issues. Thanks for reading!!

I guess my days in the music industry have paid off FINNALLY! Commercial pop filters can be reeeally expensive, but this one is free! And it fits with the homemade feel of LBP 2010-05-14 10:45:00

Cool, that's pretty interesting. It sure beats having to buy some expensive peripherals just to record things for LBP.2010-05-14 12:41:00

Lol! I don't know why but that was quite funny! That looks as good as the proper ones too. XD

But all pop filters do is soften the voice, they won't get rid of any annoying background noise or buzzing - which I can see as being the main problem. I'm still gunna make one of these though.

I just used the voice changer setting for my PSeye and ajusted it so that you could hear everything I said, I even tested it with a download called "PLAYSTTIONeye" or something like that.2010-05-14 14:47:00

I sure hope that the rock band mic works with LBP2, because I don't own a PS3 Eye thing...whatever it is. I'll be sure to try out this trick when I do voice overs. Nice work. ;D2010-05-14 22:14:00

I'm recruiting friends to be voice actors already. Talk about obsessed. xD My friend was actually complimented today by our teacher that he's a great enthusiastic reader.2010-05-14 22:35:00

i wonder if they will let us use ANY usb mic for VO... or if we could import from the hard drive our voice overs and sound effects?2010-05-15 02:01:00

It only seems reasonable that any USB mic will work. Seeing as how they can plug into the system. If not, I certainly hope that MP3 clips can be moved via flashdrive to the PS3 itself.2010-05-15 04:46:00

Just to put it out there - I have a ps eye and when I heare the quality of the mic I was blown away. I don't use it because it is waaay too sensitive and picks up absolutely everything. It's without a doubt the best mic I've ever tried. Not sure how lbp treats it but when using it with eye create or the xmb video chat it's crazy. So good.2010-05-15 07:21:00

So I have made a simple guide for all of you who would like to nip this problem in the butt before the game even ships.

It's "nip it in the bud." As in nip (cut off) a bud before it has a chance to sprout into a leaf or flower or something--prevent something from happening in the early stages.

Oh, and it's spelled malleable.

Now that I'm done nitpicking, great guide. I'm definitely gonna' do this. I've recruited my 13-year-old nephew to do voice work for me, 'cuz he's actually a fairly decent actor and he does impressions really well (except for lower pitched voices, obviously), and I'll probably get other friends/family members in on it too. I might even do a litle myself, but probably not much. I'm decently expressive and ok at acting--I just don't have the best voice.

so its true that we can record our own voices as sound in lbp2? great! and thanks for the tip though I have a feeling you can probably tweak the sound you make in game.

PS. my girlfriend is a great singer wink wink XD.

You don't need to worry about that PS3 have common mic system for all games it supports all driver-less USB Audio devices and all BT Headsets with standard audio profile.
