Breaking the fourth wall..

Archive: 51 posts

What are your favourite instances of games breaking the fourth wall?

Mine would be in MGS4 where Otacon says "Hey, Snake, it's time to change the disk.. Oh wait, you're on a PS3 (something something something)", can't remember all of it lol.

Anyhow, what are your favourites?

I literally lol'd at the Disk change part xD Any MGS1 fan would've got it.

Anyway, I hope everyone knows what breaking the fourth walls means.

Metal Gear Solid 1:

Psycho Mantis: Place the controller on the floor... place it as flat as you can. That's good. Now I shall move your controller, with the power of my will alone!
*controller vibrates*

Psycho Mantis: Blackout! *screen goes black*

Psycho Mantis: You like Castlevania, don't you?

^ This one is where if you have a Castlevania save in your memory card, Psycho Mantis says that....

These are all instant classics >_> And the ones in MGS4 were practically the same xD True nostalgia.

It's like breaking the barrier between gamers and the game.. E.g. The game knowing it's a game, and talks to the player or whatever..

They do it sometimes in TV shows too.

lol ive been gaming for years! and ive never heard this term .... cant say its something I like as when I play a video game I like to become a character I dont want to be thought of as someone behind a controller... in other words its like an escape from reality... or not an escape but at least a break.2008-10-06 00:01:00

Baten Kaitos. You yourself are actually a character in the game. A "spiritual guardian" to the main character of the story. At the end of the game all of the characters are the game are waving goodbye to you as you "leave" the game world. It's pretty inspired.2008-10-06 03:10:00

I love Escape from monkey island for this

Can't remember exactly the stuff, but I think its mainly narration, the fact that he's constantly talking to you throughout the game..

On MGS2 when it tell you to turn the game off, that this is just a game. That was crazy, I thought I was going crazy.

Deadpool is funny with this because he totally knows he is a comic and it is great how they do that.

Lol, that also happens in Metal Gear 1 (NOT Metal Gear Solid 1). Big Boss calls you and tells you to turn off your Sega or whatever console it was on xD

Seriously, there are a lot of games that break the Fourth Wall.

Super Smash Bros, Super Smash Bros Melee, Teen Titans, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Crash Bandicoot, Ape Escape 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Melee, Banjo-Kazooie, Final Fantasy V, Donkey Kong Country, Paper Mario, the Metal Gear series, Contact, Spyro The Dragon, Destroy All Humans 2, Destroy All Humans! Big Willy Unleashed, Monkey Island, Earthbound (series), The Sims 3 and No More Heroes.

This is apparently, a small sample.

Loved the Shadow Moses parts in MGS4 where it did that .

Hm... well, I suppose in Super Paper Mario, that guy who taught you how to flip said that some super being somewhere else would understand what he meant by "A" button.

hm, yeah, that's pretty much it.

I don't actually remember any games breaking the "fourth wall".

Except for one, but I can't remember what it was. All I remember is that if you left it too long, the character would come up to the screen and bang on the glass!

That is a classic , I loved that for its time it was so advanced and just soooo mind numbingly cool, And in MGS 4 when psycho realizes it's a PS3 lol brilliant.

I think I know what you're talking about... I'm pretty sure it was a platformer, maybe Rayman? A lot of platformers break the fourth wall due to the characters displaying impatience toward the player, I know Sonic and Spyro both do this.

I think Crash did a similar thing, he came out with a yo-yo if you left it playing to long. Not sure if that's really breaking the fourth wall though.2008-10-07 00:58:00

Well maybe not the yo-yo thing, but Spyro looked at the 'camera' and gave you a 'hurry the hell up' look and Sonic did something else that I can't remember, right now, but it was definatly directed at the player.2008-10-07 01:09:00

Yeah, the fourth wall can be very funny if done right. (Lots of the Metal Gear series examples are great at that.) But what I respect even more is when the games go out of their way to make sure everything remains in-world. Like tutorials in a realistic fashion, not just "press Triangle to blah blah blah." Or character customization that's rationalized, as opposed to simply unexplained alteration. (Although some tongue-in-cheek "magic" morphing can be a funny way of doing it, while that's a partial fourth-wall approaching.) Examples of this can be Call of Duty's opening boot camp (not as much in the other two, because the first-combat in 2 was rather contrived, and an SAS operative needing to do basic gun training was out-of-place - even if they did tongue-in-cheek it.) In addition, Skate's "got slammed by a bus, and reconstructive surgery" or Fallout 3's childhood would be great examples of the latter.2008-10-07 02:14:00

I seriously can't think of any games that "break" the fourth wall, but a Family Guy episode that just came out two days ago does it.

You guys know how some characters can understand Stewie, while Louis can't?

Well they use that in the script. Don't really want to explain it so here is the link to the full episode.

It's from 13:40 to 14:05, not really breaking the 4th wall but it's breaking some wall

Delete the link if it breaks any rules...

The program that you open to get an instant cup holder on your pc and the drive just ejects.

Some of the moves in the wario games like putting the controller flat on the ground and to win at it you pick it up and it says hello (crap my self when the controller talked first time...im shure there is a game on the ds whre you have to blow on the screen to blow out a candle...little things like that enhance the software.

Fingers crossed for the quiz game where you win cash and out of your console out pops some money, happy days.

In Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, there is a section where they just barely miss the Unknown Thief when they arrive on a planet, and Ratchet says something along the lines of, "Why is it that we're never in time to catch the bad guy?" and he looks towards the screen. This is implying either the player is causing them to be late or that it is purposely done for the plot by the game developers.

Anyways, yeah.

I'm not a big fan of breaking the fourth wall as a general rule. For me, it takes you out of the experience and reminds you you are not as much in the story as you may like to be. That said, there are a few exceptions, those in Monkey Island and MGS 1 being among them.2008-10-07 11:55:00

Did anyone try switching the controller to player 2 on MGS4? I can't remember exactly what he says but, Otacon comes on the thingy and says something ridiculous. It's great. Also when Mantis starts complaining about no rumble on MGS4(if you're using the ol' sixaxis)... that's just awesome!2008-10-13 06:44:00

Jak and Daxter 2 I believe!

Where a character says to Jak something along the lines of "This isn't a agame you know!" and both Jak and Daxter look at the screen like all sarcastic and all that! xD

Oh yeah, definetly. I remember in Thousand Year Door where Lord Crump is disguised as a pirate and whilst all the characters don't know it's him, it's painfully obvious to the player and he says something like "I know you guys can tell it's me, Lord Crump, but let's keep that away from the plumber, 'kay?". Brilliant.

I loved all the MGS examples. Just a shame it isn't done more in other games.

I also didn't think it was particularly well done in MGS4 they should have made more of it if you were on a bluetooth headset "Are you hearing voices in your head snake?" or somthing similar.

I really hate that when a game, movie or anything does it. It kills the immersion. But there's one that I did like because it was so new and no games ever did it before:

Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid, when he's controlling your controller...

Old school adventure games, especially Space Quest.

They're always poking fun at the player and the fact that it's a game, especially in Space Quest 6.

"Weren't you paying attention?" ... "In case your monitor only shows text and not pictures, the sign says 'exit'".... "Maybe we'll have one of those puzzles where you have to find a 1 pixel wide coin or something..." ,
"The lights automatically turn on when you enter the room, and turn off when you exit. Convenient isn't it? It's also cheaper to animate that way!" etc.

In the cyberspace office, clicking the EYE-cursor on the background produces the response: "You saw it here first. A preview of the famed information superhighway. Wow!". However, after six or seven more clicks, the narrator will say: "Wow! This makes my nipples hard!" instead.

One that really stands out in SQ6 though was if you manage to find something that you shouldn't have been able to without discovering clues to, the narrator accuses you of cheating and threatens to steal all of your points

Also in SQ6 when the director and writer have an argument

Or heh, Space Quest 2:

"Sorry. The used Nancy Reagan autographed "Just Say No" condom had to be removed for the shipping version."

Max Payne 1 where he hallucinates and dreams he has an HUD floating over his head.

Conker's Bad Fur day! The ending...
After you fight the Alien boss and the game freezes, then Conker calls up the programmer and threatens him

Hmmm what else...

Um.. The whole game of LittleBigPlanet!

Doom and Wolfenstein 3D taunt you when you try to exit the game. I guess that's rather minor but cool.

"For guns and glory press cancel, for work and worry say ok" ... (or something to that effecT)
That might be stretching it but I always found it cute.

This isn't in games, but in an episode of The Simpsons, a newspaper is in view of the camera, and after a while Homer says something like "Have you read it now? Good."

This was great because there are sections of text you can easily miss (like a newspaper's second headline, haha.)

Batman: Arkham Asylum breaks the fourth wall in various ways, like Riddler asking if you used the internet to solve his puzzles and Scarecrow making you think your Playstation must be broken.

The most memorable instance of fourth wall breaking for me though was the movie Funny Games. After a truly horrific act of violence the psychopathic Paul turns to the screen and asks the viewer "if you think I'm sick, then why do you continue watching me?". Also, when one of the victims gets a lucky break and manages to shoot Peter, who is Paul's partner in crime, Paul simply grabs the TV remote and rewinds the scene, playing it out again to his advantage with a foreknowledge of what is coming next. Classic.
