LBP2 : New style, New Themes

Archive: 51 posts

It's not about the new features here, but just about the new art direction and concept.

Everybody has seen that LBP2 has changed style and looks more "mature", sophisticated and technological than the actual LBP. I think it's a way to present the new features and insist on the new advanced possibilities, and maybe also to make the game looks less "childish"...
Even if I not a big fan of technological or futuristic themes usually, I pretty exited about it because MM manage to come out with very original themes for the new story levels , like a mix between 2 opposite concepts, and I find this very interesting.

Techno Renaissance
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3373/4594226053_9f284a0d26_b.jpg
Whimsical alternative take of the Renaissance period. Leonardo da Vinci-like character to guide him through a technology-based twist level

Steam & Cake:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1431/4594841180_59cc410876_b.jpg
Steampunk-style level based on a ****ed-up tea and cake party

Neon Propaganda
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3311/4594226501_6c60659843_b.jpg
Cold-war era posters line a factory environment where Sackboy is liberating oppressed workers. There is a grim nature to the level that is totally opposed to the neon lights and signs.

Fluffy High-Tech:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1306/4594841882_4e4a59512f_b.jpg
Various high-end technology equipments like video walls are mixed with bunnies and fluffy sheep. It is a cold, futuristic environment populated by adorable creatures

Designer Organic:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3400/4594227151_3b5aefb24a_b.jpg
Eco-architecture comes together around a designed and controlled version of nature. Described as "art noveau". The closest to nature Sackboy gets in this game. Elaborate designs comprised of plants.

Hand-Made Arcade
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1126/4594227597_84d8f1fa40_b.jpg
A super-tribute level to tons of arcade classics. Embraces the hand-made art from the first game. Pixels made of cardboard and wood.

So what do you think of this new global style?
Do you like it or prefer the simplier and lighthearted feel of the actual LBP?
Even if we don't know or seen a lot yet, what story theme would be your favorite? (mine would be Steam and Cake)

Love it. Looks much better than LBP1 imo. My favourite so far is techno renaissance.2010-05-13 17:39:00

Techno Renaissance is definitely my favourite so far. I really like Larry Da Vinci but my mind may change as I get to see the other areas more. I really welcome the change, I think we really are going to be getting a bit of everything here which is good for having a lot of different looking props, materials and stickers.2010-05-13 17:40:00

Neon propaganda looks like the one with the deepest and most distinct story line so far, so I think that would be my favourite so far. Fluffy high teach will probably give us the coolest objects though.2010-05-13 18:15:00

I'm loving the idea of the Fluffy High Tech area. Definitely I'll be using its background for things like secret bases and whatnot. Definitely the most aesthetically pleasing setting to me. 2010-05-13 18:22:00

I must say I agree with that. It definately looks like the most laid back of the 6 themes.

Yep! With Fluffy High-Tech will also come high-tech-looking materials and stickers, so that's a plus for me. (Of course I'm still liable to use a lot of the MGS pack stuff since that's carrying over, but it's good to have more options, right? )2010-05-13 18:33:00

I'm not keen on futuristic levels either, I find that kind of atmosphere often cold and sanitized, impresonal (Fluffy High-Tech isn't my favorite one, it's all white, with straight shapes).

However, I'm really looking forward to playing Steam & Cake levels, Steampunk is one of my favorite universe of book or game (even if it's a sub-genre of science fiction, it's way different than Fluffy High-Tech )

Neon Propaganda looks very impressive too. You know what ? It reminds me of Back to the Future Part II. The way people in 1989 imagined the future in 2015. Now, we know they were (probably) wrong, none of the inventions in this film taking place in 2015 will come out in 5 years. Well that's the way I see the colorful picture on the right. It looks futuristic, but the young man and the woman are dressed as people used to be dressed several decades ago. Seems like that's how people in...well maybe 1970 imagined the future.
With orange rockets and green buildings I like this atmosphere, more colorful and hospitable than the other kinds of science fiction.

Anyway, the Neon Propaganda picture is just a propaganda poster, so I doubt the levels will take place in such a futuristic mood.

That's all, thanks for reading

Yes I agree concerning futuristic/high-Tech theme in general,
but here I think it was very a good idea from MM to mix it with cute fluffy creatures! The contrast makes it quirky and interesting!

Like you, I'm looking forward for the steam and cake one, it would make great settings.
Here again, mixing the steampunk style, with the tea party idea is great

I'm all for steam and cake, definetely. That theme alone seems to deliver enough quirkyness to satisfy me!

And I also noticed -and loved!- how they are mixing "themes" in quite a weird/unexpected way. I believe that it is a very good approach to break "stereotypes" which is EXACTLY what was delivered in LBP1. In LBP1 they really covered the basics through the whole different cultures approach. You had japanese materials along with some african looking ones, metropolis-like metals, etc...
Now that they have all that covered, looks like they are trying to get more imaginative, and it is clear to me that they are mixing/juxtaposating ideas/themes in order to come up with unseen, unexpected settings.
It is in "frontiers", after all, where creativity is born!

I choose some pictures for each theme to have an in-game view,
but in fact I think the trailer and the official pictures available just show 3 of those themes :
Techno Rennaissance, Fluffy High-Tech, Neon Propaganda.
There not really in-game visuals for the 3 others themes...

(If I wrong please tell me... )

Handmade Arcade is going to be the best one, so I be they will save it for last. Why's the doctor saying E=Mc3?

I love these look like postage stamps. Globally fits in with LBP.

Look forward to it. Doing the same style of last game would've felt non-innovative. But of course there's still the create portion that can turn these devices, materials, and themes into anything else for those who like the older type.2010-05-13 23:27:00

Designer Organic seems the most obscure to me. Making it the most interesting as well in my own opinion. I love the whole contrasting ideas to create themes as well. I'm sure I'll love Fluffy High-Tech and Designer Organic the most (although I love the idea of Neon Propaganda).2010-05-14 22:58:00

The LBP1 themes were rather cliche, and I can understand why they're pick cliches, but these new ones seem so much more interesting. And besides liking them, I also have a lot of use for them. The victorian steam stuff should fit well in one of my levels, and the high tech look has some quintessential materials for another level concept that I have thusfar not been able to reproduce using the currect materials and stickers.2010-05-14 23:10:00

I think Designer Organic is based on light(think Don Lu's dog level in LBP1 x100) with some really cool stuff like glowing fireflies that move around a track and a little floating light that follows you around. I like Neon Propoganda most atm. Wanna see more of steam and cake.

Yeah Designer Organic is intriguing...

http://www.1up.com/media?id=3809629&type=lg

but from the picture, it look really abstract, only based on Art Nouveau style and shapes,
I was expecting something more" natural", like real plants mixed with technology...
not sure it will be my favorite but I'll wait to see more before judging

Mm said they wanted to gradually move away from classic platforming to the more revolutionary stuff they've included, so here's how I think the story will be like:

Techno Renaissance = Introduction, tutorial levels (like Gardens), introduction to new platforming elements such as grapphe hook and bounce pads
Steam and Cake = Change to a slightly more eclectic atmosphere, introduction to some of the rumoured new methods of moving objects, etc.
Neon Propoganda = Introduction to Sackbots, possibly some of the first non-platforming elements
Fluffy High Tech = Appearance of new laser hazard, and first use of direct control seats
Designer Organic = Possibly the first sighting of a true sack-tracking light? More natural materials/objects, as most of the other levels are based on techno themes
Handmande Arcade = The section I'm most looking forward to, where the true scope of LBP2's support of other gametypes will be showcased
They've put in some really good gameplay too, especially in Neon Propoganda. You can see a lot of it on the Qore episode, though the level doesn't look quite finished - it has no background, unlike in the trailer.

Hmm.. I feel like this game will be longer than LBP1. In the trailer when it mentions sagas, did you see how much levels The Hideout had?!
I think at least 80 or 90 levels total in the game, unless they were mostly minigames. But I think we'll definitely have more than just three levels per Creator Curator. Oh - And I like Fluffy high Tech, Neon Propaganda, and Eve's asylum (Forgot what it was called.)
