Winch Problem

Archive: 8 posts

Okay, so I made a pirate ship and have a winch going from the crow's nest to the ship's deck with a piece of grabbable sponge attached so players can get to the nest. Problem is, everytime I grab the sponge and get hoisted up, the winch begins to jitter and jump around like it's under extreme stress and ready to break. The winch for some reason only goes a little way up. When I do grab the sponge in a different position, the winch seems stable, but it doesn't hoist to it's min value, which is set to 0.5. It gets half way up and then goes back down. I have included a diagram of the basic structure in this post.

Can someone please help me with this?

Current settings for the winch:

Min length: 0.5
Max length: 155
Strength: 10

Speed: 10 secs
Pause: 2 secs

Thanks,

I'm not sure what's wrong, but just for some tips, set the grab sensor to directional and say yes to invert, and it'll make it so it only goes up and when you let go, it automatically goes down. But I've also heard stuff that winches act odd when the min value is low.2010-05-12 00:54:00

Thanks. Does it make a difference as to what the winch is connected to? One end is connected to a light I placed at the top and the other end is attached to the sponge. Does this also effect the result if the sponge is too small?2010-05-12 01:55:00

I had exactly the same problem with the winch on my pirate ship and the trouble turned out to be the grabbable material was slightly too small. I made it a bit bigger and it stopped the jittering and worked much better.2010-05-12 02:00:00

It's because the minimum setting is too low. Always make sure it's at least 1.0 to be safe.2010-05-12 06:24:00

You're welcome mate. Glad I could help.

It's amazing sometimes what little things make the difference between something in LBP working well or not and I'm learning something new all the time. It took me days to find out that was the problem with my jittery winch. I never knew shrinking things small caused that problem and I've been playing and creating for18 months now. Then again I am a very slow learner lol.
