My take on an easy RPG mechanic

Archive: 9 posts

In the video, it shows you can control the sack bots, or at least it shows a sackboy jumping on a sack bot and riding around.

In any case it is easily confirmed you can make direct control vehicles, so either by sack bot or a vehicle made to look like a character, I believe you could easily make a full on RPG with very little thermo use.

Let's take a basic 3 attribute system for your character,
Magic Power, Health Power, and Item Power.
Now you can hopefully use the circuit board in each character/vehicle to have multiple inputs from outside sources. In the very basic schematic, I imagine a multiple stage piston where each stage is a level, and the higher up the piston moves up, the closer a mag switch gets to the sensor set to speed, for attack power - this would increase the rate of fire of your guns, just for example.

The applications are limitless to how you set up the input to the sackbot/vehicle... but the input itself can be made like a good RPG, where you make the character pick what he wishes to upgrade. Each time your player reaches a point in which he or she can level something up, you give him some sort of input option - in my example three pushbutton switches. Then you make each switch disable the other two, and have an output to the vehicle circuit to increase that certain attribute...

And voila - a decent choose your fate RPG system...

Here's my basic input setup -( I say basic because you would have to make a directional to on/off converter ) for the dissolve parts.

Real quick explination: This would easily allow you to force the players to make only one of three choices. Because selecting any of the three buttons would dissolve an input to the other two buttons, and with the input dissolved, the AND gate at the bottom would now never work when the second or third choice is depressed. Even if you hit two at the same time it would probably disable both simultaneously and you wouldn't level up ANY OF THE THREE! Which is what you get for cheating, haha.

sounds like a solid idea. put it in a microchip and you have a cheap solid idea. its good.2010-05-11 19:12:00

Or just have FIre Rate and Strength as the atturbutes if you want it to be more basic, to increase the strength it would emit diffrent enmys and projectiles, firerate would just be an emmiter.2010-05-12 01:16:00

Yeah fire rate was my example - you could use pistons which each make the sensor get closer to the mag switch set to speed, then that switch attached to a motor bolt spinning a wheel with mag sensors which then rotate faster around and trigger a mag switch set to one time attached to the firing mechanism in the micro chip (or emitter in LBP1)2010-05-12 02:44:00

Dude, I'll bet MM has you covered. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the game supports "leveling up" in your games already! Like as an official feature.

Remember, it's a "platform for games".

The devs have built a WORKING RTS GAME. IN LITTLEBIGPLANET *mind = blown*. I'm pretty sure leveling up in an RPG will be a piece-o-cake.

I don't think they'll build levelling into the game. Mm's philosophy seems to be providing simple tools which creators can combine into complex behaviour. Levelling up, like RTS and other systems, can be programmed in the announced microchips. I expect those chips to be very powerful and easy to use, so you can build your own levelling system.

But you are right about not worrying about it too much right now. There is very little information about the microchips, but I'm sure they'll be a lot different from our current logic (in implementation, not the idea behind it). So for now I'd just think about how you want your system to work, and not how to build it.

yeah I am not saying how I would make the leveling up system, because I have no idea how the micro chip works, this thread was just to show a simple way of how you would force a player to chose from a set of skills or traits or powers or summons, etc... it's something I know for sure will work on LBP2, because it would work right now on LBP1... Most good RPG's you can sculpt your character giving him more defense or more offense or more magic etc... this was just showing a simple way to let the players chose only one of 3 options.

And of course to discuss the potential of creating leveling up systems, health systems, etc. because speculation is always fun.

Yeah, but what about going to different areas? Can you take sackbots into different levels? See, my question about this whole RPG thing is this: What happens when you go into different levels? I could see this causing a LOT of problems.2010-05-12 19:50:00
