IGN LBP2 Preview [A must read]

Archive: 33 posts

Worthy of a thread I'd say (didn't see one either so delete if there already is).

Let me just say; ohmigod.

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/108/1088513p1.html

It also confirms that there are more features like the grapple hook to be announced!

Oh mi god indeed.

So you CAN record movements for Sackbots via SixAxis... Like the "Flags" they've got though.

The really amazing thing about the over-the-shoulder-view... They're referring to the caterpillar segment. A TOP-DOWN segment! Meaning it's not just running forward and back across one plane. It's moving in all directions, in 3d!

Does anyone else think, that along with the ability for objects to shift layers, that we may also get layer "ramps" so that you can transition smoothly from one layer to another?

If not, the layer-shifting objects will be absolutely huge. Imagine the following.

You create a top-down level, with the "ground" being the farthest flat layer. You pin the camera into an over-the-shoulder perspective. You're left with something that looks somewhat similar to mario kart. But you can use the rest of those 3 layers to build up 3d structures - some of which can actually work as elevators and lift you up and down.

I didn't even consider this kind of thing might be in there, but there you have it. I can't wait to see this in action. The possibilities for variety are getting ridiculous.

My brain has gone into overload with all the LBP2 hype released in the last week or so. I want it badly and I want it now! So many great advancements and additions all around, but so far I think the sackbot concept is my favorite new feature of the game. In my minds eye I can see myself building a castle seige level where the player gets to invade a heavily defended fortress full of enemy sackbots, with a grappling hook in hand and a loyal sackbot army rallying behind them! I wonder if I went down MM's offices, stamped my feet and and threatened to pee in their coffee, would they let me have the first beta test?2010-05-11 08:59:00

Great article, I like the idea of controlling a sackbot but not being able to see sackboy. Am I the only one slightly confused here at this part?:

"one much-requested creator feature to ease the design process - the ability to copy and place multiple versions of the same object in a level. There's a new drag-style selection tool at hand for this meaning you can tweak individual instances of the same object without having to start again from scratch."

Can't we do this already?

.... doooOOOOOOOOOD!!!

whooa... And we know you can put the camera down over the shoulder of the vehicle/sackbot...
That means... I was wrong. You could TOTALLY do a modnation racers type of format, make a mariokart level in full 3d.

I wonder if you could use these ramps to make bridges that you can drive under? Stack ramps and bridges 3 layers high? you drive on the bottom with 2 intersecting bridges above you like a freeway cloverleaf?

I wonder if a sackbot can walk around on the back wall like that? We haven't heard anything about that, only heard of the OTS camera working with a caterpillar and only seen rats, caterpillars, cars, and flying machines using the "top down" angle.

still. this little feature instantly increases the possibilities tenfold.

Oh man, I hope you're right. This would be a brilliant way to introduce some 3D gameplay into it. It's still the same 3 layer gameplay, but with 360 degree movement and you build the level the same way you build 2D levels. It's kind of like building a level then knocking your TV on its back and sackboy is walking around on the screen. lol This would be great for RPG world maps and RTS games or even board games. Now we just need to know if Sackboy can walk on walls so we can turn them into floors!

Totally! but in the driving segments, doesn't it look like we're looking down onto sackboy drivers from above? with little bobbing heads? That's gotta be promising.

Another thing here - there have been so many interviews and features and articles I can't possibly hunt down the exact instance... I think it was an interview with one of the game's level designers. But he said that they had already come up with ways to sort of cheat into into creating fully 3D games. I think we may have just stumbled onto exactly how that's going to work. Over the shoulder view on the back wall with the faux "top-down" camera.

So yeah, the only thing missing is having sackbots be able to run around on that wall. Keep your eyes absolutely peeled in the coming media releases. If we see anywhere a sackboy or sackbot running on the "background" wall... we'll be in business. Although I doubt they'll be able to jump! It'll be an interesting way to get around though!

Oh you can bet I'll keep my eye on it. I mean all the evidence we need is there already, but I gotta see some sack people walking around on the walls to know for sure. This would just be amazing! I wonder how the backgrounds would look though.

I bet the whole setup would probably look pretty weird... I mean it's not like we can point spotlights... OUTWARD... Most of the game's tools are designed for a different perspective, so certain objects seen from the side, and lighting, and draw distance... yeah it might be pretty weird.

I sort of imagine it a bit like "Flatland". See what it's like to BE a 2-dimensional shape.
Hah, someone's going to make that level. "play as a rectangle as he discovers the existence of a third dimension!"

*Writtes down*
I'll make that just because, so don't you forget you said those words.

And gah i just can't believe so much more stuff!
And not to mention the 75+ exta csoctumes and many more costumes and stickers to come!
I as a level maker AND costume maker will surely be anjoing this upgrade.

They said they had dont a C&C copy using the LBP2 editor.

I GUESS ( and hope ) they had lots of Sackbots moving around as units with paintinators.

Because that would be EPIC

I'm pretty sure we'll be able to build bridges like those. In fact, if you look closely at the trailer, during one of the kart segments, you can see a river of lava with ramps at each side, so the karts CAN make a jump. What gets me intrigued about this is: if the karts were to fail the jump (jump means suddenly going to the mid layer from the back one) could the fall to the lava river (thus falling from the middle layer to the back one)? If the answer is yes, which I highly doubt, that would mean that we would be able to:

1- Add some kind of top down gravity, wich pushes objects to whatever layer we select.
2-Or tweak the ramps in order to tell the engine for how much time the ramped up object is able to stay in the selected layer.

My bets are on the 2nd one.

About the walking on the walls thing, I'd say that what we are seeing here, instead of karts actually racing, it's a level with it's gravity set to 0, and "karts" propulsed with rockets or something alike.

EDIT: Isn'ta ll this so DAMM cool!?
EDIT2: Here is the picture of the ramps I mentioned: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lbpcentral/4595680807/in/set-72157624034075378/
Altough you dont get to see the lava river here, if you stop the trailer at the right moment, you should be able to sight it

I hope not. 'pushed back' means it will be be delayed. I want it pushed forward. Though to be honest I've never known any game in history come out early. They're nearly always delayed by a long way. Let's hope LBP2 can break the mould and delight us with an early or at least on-time release. crosses fingers, toes, eyes and everything else. ouch that hurts!

I love the idea of kids with business cards. They give you a little business card and on the back there?s a QR code, like, ?Check out my levels.?

That is beautiful.

Well currently if you copy something multiple times, then go and edit one. You have to go back and replace all the copies you made with the new updated one. The new feature in LBP2 allows a sort of control copy. If you edit that one instance all the other ones get the changes too, which is a huge help!

I say it's a clever camera trick. I could be wrong.
But it could be accomplished by curving the track and making some "fill" under it. I still think MNR is 100x better if you want to make a kart racer.

Jesus...Jesus...JESUS! I mean...darn! First, there's Red Dead Redemption, then, Mafia II, then Fallout New Vegas and now THIS! Sweet jesus... I think I'll buy Red Dead after LBP2. It just looks too awesome. This is like the next generation LBP. And I really can't say a single thing that I'm not hyped about it. Well, maybe the robo-sacks will cost a nice slice of thermo, but maybe the therm is updated as well Can't...freaking...wait!2010-05-12 21:25:00

Maybe pulled back would have been a better wording. And yeah I hope nothing is delayed like with LBP1 with that music incident.
