Rear View

Archive: 7 posts

Now that we finally have Front View, I'd like to see a REAR view as well... this could literally cut create time in half on some projects!

Picture this, I have 3 equally sized circles placed in front of each other. The middle one is motor bolted to the back one, and the front one is glued on top of the middle one. Tweaking the bolt would require deletion and a complete rebuild (since there's no way to line the circles back up, let alone edit the back one). Rear View would fix this in seconds, and I'm sure it's perfectly possible within the limitations of the game engine. Sure, you wouldn't be able to see the background, but who cares?

Actually, this isn't really helpful. Wouldn't going to Rear View make everything into a mirror effect? Not to mention this will make things more complicated, with swithing back and forth... and back and forth. Personally, I love the views we already have. In fact, I'm seeing one now. It's a sea just beyond the horizon. 2010-05-10 22:57:00

I could see how thats helpful. But I think that'd create some lag during the camera transition.2010-05-11 17:09:00

That's an interesting idea I never thought of before. It would probably be useful for certain things, but I wonder if the benefit would outweigh the trouble to code it. Still, if we had it I would definitely already be using it, at least occasionally.2010-05-12 04:59:00

Actually, yes it is. Maybe not to YOU but it is... if you did't find it useful, you wouldn't have to use it. The mirror effect could be negated by a simple x-axis inversion.

Who cares about a bit of lag during camera transition? It's not like you'd need framerate at that particular moment anyway.

I seriously doubt it would be any real hassle to code it... that's the beauty of programming in a 3d environment. Everything is already there to be messed with. Likely the camera axes are already assigned to a floating value that can be edited at will. The only likely issue would be telling gadgets to display on the back of objects, and even that shouldn't tax an experienced programmer.

I've taken on much more challenging tasks in the past, I don't see why professional coders would find it any more difficult.

I think that better will be add option to do needed layers invisible. So you can do front layers invisible and easily edit back layers.2010-05-12 10:49:00
