Making Levelscapes

Wouldn't it be cool just to create a massive scenic landscape just for the hell of it? As in, no level mechanics or anything, just a huge, highdetailed landscape...2010-05-09 19:13:00

I believe Warlord Evil does that sort of thing with his level templates...2010-05-09 19:52:00

No I don't mean a template as such, I'm talking about something that would fill the entire thermometer, with detail in every tiny part.2010-05-09 21:16:00

I actually like this idea. No real obstacles and just an open environment.2010-05-09 21:31:00

I don't know if it would be good to publish the level though. It sounds like it would be fun to make and cool to show your friends but playing it only wouldn't be so fun unless you are looking solely for detail.2010-05-09 21:39:00

Why not? LBP isn't just about creating levels, this would be a new kinda thing, like art almost.

I'm with you 100%. I think it would be fantastic. Much of the stuff I've played with creating on my own in create mode is exactly that. Sometimes I've gone in and attempted to make them into levels after the fact. The end segment of "Fear and the Phantom Town" is one such example, which explains why it's so maniacally chaotic and totally lacking in discipline.

But what you're basically describing is pure creation, using the shoebox provided by LittleBigPlanet to create a diarama. Purely a miniature world, meant to be witnessed and seen and explored, with no worries of making that jump or getting to the next checkpoint or solving this diabolical puzzle or falling through the level or getting the logic to work correctly, etc etc.

I wish this kind of thing were more common. The closest thing to it are the on-rails "musical" levels, a lot like the beautiful Howl's Moving Castle one, and IceMaiden's Frog Chorus level. The closest thing to these are the rides at theme parks where you get in the boat and go through the cave full of little attractions, like Disneyland's Pirates of the Carribbean and It's a Small World After All.

Hmm... Yes, now I see the attraction. A very good idea, actually...2010-05-09 23:17:00

Hey, I'm pretty good with environments. I wouldn't mind getting in on this!
That really does sound like a great idea. I've had the thought to do that a few times, but I never really followed it. But it would really be cool.

...you know, you're right! Not all levels have to have gameplay! I love details...might give this a try 2010-05-10 00:08:00

What started off this idea was when i made a huuuge desert using the 3d glitch, that filled the whole level. I added some stuff to it, and whenever someone joined me, I invited them to add something, and it kind of grew. So now im working on a swamp, a huge, open swamp, I will probably upload some pictures of it soon 2010-05-10 21:46:00

Hah, that is kind of brilliant actually. You could almost devote a few levels to being just huge community expression-sessions. Just giant vibrant outpourings of pieces and parts and things and scenes and stages and sets. I mean, without discipline the thermometer would probably fill up pretty quickly... but who cares! Without gameplay the stakes are considerably lower!
You'll probably get low star ratings and "boring" tags and crap like that from the larger LBP community, but it's a very endearing idea to me.

May I add you and we start on something?

errm i don't think i have enough friend spaces left :S

but really, this is more of a one person idea, each creator to his own landscape sorta thing. it would only work if two creators thought the same way or something like that...

This sound great! I love visuals levels, and even if there's no gameplay at all!
Just walking through a nice detailled scenery, with a good atmopshere, and enjoying with the eyes

Like Teebonesy, when I start a level, it just about visuals! I think about nothing else! When I'm happy about the design and the atmosphere, I start thinking of gameplay... but for me this part is a little painful

I'm facing this problem right now with my actual level, I'm thinking of not adding any gameplay
but I'm a little worried about how it will be perceived (bad comments, bad ratings...) I'll see...

Anyway... you should definetly do this! There's people who love that

FlyingHaggis asked me to post these pictures of how his swamp is progressing because his PC has a virus, oh noes! Here they are, cause I'm his buddy (isn't that right, Haggis? xD) Getting four people to stand still for a photo isn't fun

Yes it works now, I see them! Thanks

That look really cool! Very moody settings!
Some zoomed out pictures would be cool to appreciate the landscape and the background more...

That's amazing! I like the overall mood of it. And as dajdaj said, zoomed out pictures would be nice, too. Also, I believe swamps have trees. And a crocodile/alligator would be hilarious! 2010-05-15 00:31:00
