How to cope with the loss of a level or your PS3 (YLoD)

My Levels:
* LBP WRESTLING
* LBP WRESTLING 2: ICON
* LBP WRESTLING: THE RIOT (Survival Challenge)

If you want your level reviewed or are looking for levels to play stop by our LittleBiGReview Group thread.

Hello LBP community:smileyvery-happy:, I wrote this a while back at LittleBIGWorkshop.com. I recently found it and thought that it might come of good use to someone here. This document is slightly long, but a good and useful read. It was done to help those little Sackboys/girls that have had gone by or are going through the pain and heartache of loosing a created level or their PS3. Little Big Planet and the PS3 were intended to be fun and exciting, but as time passed some of us have seen the darker side of each.

http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk233/Maltays/Sackboy.png

The Beginning
When the game came out I was really hooked. I played the story everyday on my PS3 (black/60 Gb version) and waited until I unlocked everything with my younger brother to create my first level. That day finally arrived, I was really excited with my papers jam-packed full of ideas. Every time I created/added something I just had to play the level. I must have tested it around 100 times (no joke) just to make sure everything worked smoothly.

Tragedy
One day in particular, I turned on the system and kept on editing my level. It was about 70-80% done. I applied the rewind button and the level just froze. I thought to myself: "Ok?..., that never happened before...". I had no option but to turn off the PS3 manually because the "PS" button on the controller didn't work. When I tried to turn the PS3 back on all that happened were three beeps and a yellow light. I reached for the PS3 manual to see what that sequence meant. Not much help:smileymad:. I was desperate because the game was stuck inside and in denial that I may have lost the system and mainly my level. I felt robbed without knowing the burglar. A hit and run sort of speak. LBP was the only real game I waited anxiously all day to play on the PS3 when I got home.:smileysad:

The Quest
I searched endlessly online trying to salvage last year's star Christmas gift (then 2007) and my favorite Birthday gift (the LBP game); which got stuck in the system. I read countless threads, forums and videos of those unlucky few who also went through the same loss. I came by with the correct term of the "terminal disease" that my system is suffering from. They called it the "Yellow Light of Death" (YLoD):smileysurprised:. Similar to the XBox's "Red Ring of Death" (RoD). At the time, levels were getting moderated as well so players were losing their levels. I knew how they felt, but worse because I lost my system as well. I also read that apparently it only happens to the 60 Gb version. I found a couple of self-proclaimed "trick solutions", which I tried. These tricks involved different combinations of turning the PS3 on and off. Another dead end.

Then I only really had three options:
1. Fix the system myself (not recommended)
2. Send system to get fixed
3. Buy new system

I called SONY, they told me they charge $200 bucks to fix the system (or give send a different one) without the possibility of recuperating any of the information in the hard drive and with only a 30 day guarantee. They told me that the game would be carefully removed and sent back with the system, but I didn't want to take the chance. I made the decision of trying to fix it myself knowing that SONY told me they wont take it in to fix afterwards if the seal is broken. I dissected the system completely. No dice. I then bought a laptop hard drive enclosure to attempt to extract the files out of the system. When I bought the enclosure and connected it to my computer it could not read it. I received help from a computer expert and told me that apparently the PS3 hard drive was fried and had to reformat it if I wanted to use it. I felt like I was left stranded purposely in a dessert

Acceptance
After all the turmoil, I took a deep breath and have now reached a state of acceptance. "Its just a game" I said to myself. "No use crying over spilled milk" and "Crying never solves anything"(even though I didn't, but its a phrase that helps solve any of life's situations"). Fact is, no matter the type of level one creates in Little Big Planet, its really all about the time and dedication that was invested. Including all the emotions that one went through the creative process.

A New Beginning
I focused on other things, but still realized that the PS3 was the best choice for a console. This is because:

1. You do not have to pay a monthly fee
2. It has blue ray
3. It has game and system updates
4. It has LBP and other great exclusive games
5. Amongst other reasons like PSP compatibility.

On Thanksgiving Day, we were blessed randomly enough with a new PS3:smileyvery-happy:. Not that we(my brother and I) minded, but we were speechless. Here I went into a new state of mind, restarting the level. This time it was going to be better. I reached for my old paper and redesigned some stuff.Until finally, the day came when I published it with the name of LBP WRESTLING. I consider it to be better than the original.

The Aftermath
I was then greeted by the LBP community by hearts and plays on my level:smileyvery-happy:, which felt well deserved after everything that happened. In return, I played their levels and left comments/suggestions.

Failed to Load and No Infinite Rewind?
Recently I published part 2, which did not go without its fair share of scares. During the creative process of "LBP WRESTLING 2: ICON"I have had my fair share of "failed to load" messages.Thinking I lost this level as well it really did not hit me as hard as the first time, but kept on trying to access it. I was finally able to by pressing the "play" option instead of the "edit" option. While in "play", I pressed the "pause" button and entered "create mode". I remembered there was always a part of the level that worked a bit weird and decided to remove it completely. After doing so the level has no longer shown the "failed to load" message. After I passed that obstacle and almost finished the level I decided to add skull (objects) to the boss battle to make it look more similar to one of the photos in the game. Having done that I kept editing and adding other aspects of the level. When I gave it the "final test run", the boss was useless. The main attraction of the level stopped working properly. I thought to myself "WHY?!?!". Thinking about what I might have done I remembered the skulls and immediately realized that the rewind button was not going to reach since it has a limit of how much it can go back. I tried anyways. No dice. Luckily, I remembered that I copied the level on a different space on "My Moon".

Suggestions (minimizing "Murphy's Law" or YLoD):
1. Have in mind its just a game (A really good one at that:smileyhappy
2. Save a copy of your data at the end of every week (if your a hardcore gamer, once a month if your a casual gamer).
3. Good System Ventilation (Wood or glass are not good heat dissipators. Iam looking for a block of aluminum to place under mine).
4. No food or beverages close to the system.
5. Place system in a horizontal position.
6. Im not sure what to say about the "Intercooler"

* I had one and its really noise
* I have read in the internet by other PS3 owners that it actually damages the system. I had one connected to the PS3 when it got the YLoD.

7. Read "11 Common problems in LBP" by BLUFALCON78.

8. Make sure to also read "PS3 Survival Guide PS3 help and answers" by glitchcheat

Hope this helps all those in need. Thank you for reading, playing, creating and sharing. I invite you to try my levels and if you have any questions feel free to contact me. Im part of the group "LittleBigReview Group" so if you want your level to be reviewed you can either contact me or post it.

NEW ADDITION!!!!

As read, its hard to lose a level and a PS3. To get your mind away from the situation or while your waiting for your PS3 to get fixed, you can do one of the following:

1. Do some excersice. Make sure to press hard to work those biceps.

http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/SackboyTV.jpg

2. Pick up a hobby like painting
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/SackboyPaint.jpg

3. Perfect your culinary skills!.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/DSCN0122-1.jpg

Note: Leaving the plastic wrapper on the hot dogs and cooking them for 10 minutes is not the best recipe.

4. Pick up a good book and read it. We are the sons of the modern era and do not read much. As you can see, I have read this one several times.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/DSCN0126-1.jpg

5. Pick up the mantle of a superhero or villain.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/191167_1_hs.jpg

6. Watch paint dry. You can never be too careful. The paint might try to run away.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj160/28towers/DSCN0125-1.jpg

7. Remember that as a human you have responsibilities. Like paying attention to your dogs. Believe it or not, she is actually part asleep while in that position. Or maybe she is just looking at Sackboy.

Hi Silverleon,

Thank you for reading it. Glad to see you like the post Well, the system works best horizontally due to gravity. I will get a bit technical here, but here we go . When placed vertically, the disk's center of gravity is higher with respect to the floor (horizontal floor). Having a higher center of gravity causes the disk to shift from left to right more often. These small and subtle movements can clash bit by bit with the reading lens. On the long run, it may wear off the lens thus rendering the PS3 unable to read disks. Placing the system horizontally with the table (or where ever you have it) reduces the height of the center of gravity thus minimizing the vibration.

Think of it like this. A normal car has a low center of gravity since it is closer to the ground. A truck on the other hand, has a much higher center of gravity because its height. When they both make a turn, a car is most likely to stay stable while the truck has a higher probability of tilting over. When my PS3 died, I talked to a couple of tech guys and they told me the same thing, but they never got around to telling me why. This is the only logical explanation I can give you. This theory only applies to the old versions of the PS3 (20Gb and 60Gb). I have not tried or heard anything from the new versions of the consoles. Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Thank you again for reading

(Oh mine is a fat 80GB btw)

Ah well that'd make sense.
I had my PS3 vertically as i heard that way it played better, like with the PS2 i remember hearing it helps play old CDs and stuff if i placed it Vertically.

And since my PS3 is paced in this shelf-thingie where its surrounded all around i thought it'd be best to place it vertically for there's less obstruction of ventilation. (I don't really have anywhere else to place it atm since the floor is covered in rug and we all know that's not the best place to set electronics )

So should i just swamp it to horizontal even tho the shelf walls to the sides will be closer to the ventilation vent or leave it vertically?

Hi Silverleon,

Hmmm, if that's the case, I would leave the system as you have it. Make sure that if the system is placed vertically that the vent on top has sufficient space to breath. Perhaps like at least 6 or 7 inches. Another thing I know is that wood and glass ARE NOT good dissipaters of heat. I placed a coaster under each corner of the system. This added gap between the counter top and the system allows it to dissipate heat on all sides. A fan facing it and turned full blast allows me to play longer and with peace of mind. Make sure that the fan does not generate a air flow against or parallel to the vents. This will cause the system's vented dust to go back in since the fan is stronger. Place the fan so that the air flows perpendicular to the vents. This will help the system move dirt particles away from it thus allowing it to work easier and more efficiently. Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

I would suggest fixing it yourself. It may seem intimidating but is very easy once identify your system with video tutorials. What you need to do is re-flow the motherboard and add thermo paste. But even if you do it and it starts to work again, it will only give you a weeks worth of play. Just enough time to retrieve your data, backup or do PS3 transfer.

It sucks because all the hard rives fit into each other and should be as simple as buying a new system and swapping the drives...but Sony doesn't allow that and could be fixed with a simple software update.

They also don't allow you swap motherboards, everything else works but the motherboard so you need to buy all new parts on top of it when you have perfectly good ones already.

I would also suggest buying a new one instead of paying for it to be fixed, because they don't fix it just swap it with a refurbished one, and you only have 1-3 month warranty?Sony makes it really difficult for you and doesn?t provide you with any real solutions?

Why does Sony makes it so hard? I mean, 1 year of guarantee? have to pay for extended guarantee? non transferable hard-drive? (Wiht this one I mean that if you change your hard drive from your ps3 to another it wont read the data! data is only readable on the ps3 that it is formatted for!)

Dont take me bad (i know there are some Sony fanboys here >__> <__<) but I own a 360, those have a 3 year guarantee (I had already 4 360's, 1st 2 got RROD by the year of use, the 3rd one got error E74 at 2 years of use, my 4th one is an Elite and only has 4 months of use yet, I used best buy's 50 bucks guarantee, so I just went and changed the 360's for a new one, by my 4th one I just got my 400 bucks back and bought an elite which was 300, even got a bigger 250Gb HDD, i hated the 20Gb model!), the 360 can swap Hard drives and there wont be any problem with the data!

Now, dont take me as a 360 fanboy or anything (I am not, i really got angry when my 360 failed!), but why doesn't Sony try to admit that its console is error susceptible like Microsoft did! (Or at-least make data transferable by hard drive swap, I hate to do constant back ups).

By not admitting there is a problem means that they don't need to recall the units. Microsoft has done an amazing job for warranties and exchanges when they had a simular problem. I have only had my PS3 for 2 years when it crashed, 1 year past warranty and they won't even let me exchange the motherboard...has to be the whole system. You do a YLOD google search and you see 325,000 hits, and 8600 videos. Those are just the people who are technical and can identify the problem to research it....the mojority don't know whats going on and just buy a new one.

Its easy to give a crap warranty if you know your parts expire after a period of time, maybe thats their plan for their customers to keep buying the system. I even saw a class action suit over it; a lawfirm is looking for people who have the error to sue Sony...

that's actually where I wanted to go, didn't Sony actually advertised the PS3 on the beginning as a very reliable system? (and used that to justify the exorbitant price of the console at launch), I smell fake advertising. Still the PS3 is more reliable than the 360, but is more expensive!, why not to give a better guarantee plan?

If you find those commercials please post, it make a good case when approaching Sony for repairs...
