Optical Illusions & Interesting photos

Archive: 37 posts

Im really interesting in these type of photos so thought id share some with you all.
You may or may not have seen some of these already. Feel free to add your own!

On the first two you have to stare at the middle of the picture for 30-40 seconds, preferably without blinking!
Then stare at a blank light coloured wall or ceiling and an image will appear!

Have fun looking!

I really love these, called stereograms.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Almwitch05/stereogram.jpg

http://www.testmeat.co.uk/photos/images/stereoscopic.jpg

Have to cross your eyes to see the images as this 3d kind of looking thing. best way I can describe is to look at the top one as if your looking at something behind it, then it will blur and should eventually come into focus when your brain works out the patterns.

Second one you have to cross your eyes so the image separates into two copies of itself, then you uncross slowly until the two middle ones overlap so it should look like 3 of the images. The centre one will come into focus with a 3d look to it as well.

I_I = image
I_I I_I (side by side)= cross eyes so its blurred = I_I I_I I_I I_I(2 versions now albeit somewhat blurry!) +focus a little = I_I I_I I_I if that makes sense..

There's a trick to it but once you figure it out it's easy to do it. They are also commonly know as magic eyes. It actually has nothing to do with the pattern lol. It forms 2 waves, the top one says in and out and the bottom one says out and in. I just thought it was a good example because the 3d effect is quite noticeable when you get it. Some are a lot more subtle. It is a bit odd, you have to mess around with focusing your eyes near the end when it's just starting to appear well I do anyhow.

Bearing in mind you have to be looking through it sort of. A tip I seen before is to imagine a white ball floating above and behind the image or in this case your monitor. Then imagine the ball floating down behind the monitor(stops behind the magic eye) and just keep looking at the imaginary ball. The blurry magic eye should do its thing then after a few seconds to a minute. If it just looks like a mess still after a while your probably not getting it right lol.

Cool thread Tia, here's my all time favourite.

Does the brown square at the top of the Rubik's cube appear to be identical in colour with the yellow square this is in the middle of the side?

Focus on one wheel, and you see it's not moving.
But move your eyes around from one wheel to the
next, and all of them appear to be spinning.

they are the same shade of grey because B is covered by the shadow... making it seem darker then it actually is. also the baackground colours are different, effecting you eyes. quite cool when you think about it. nice.

See if you can do this. Read each line aloud.

This is this cat
This is is cat
This is how cat
This is to cat
This is keep cat
This is an cat
This is idiot cat
This is busy cat
This is for cat
This is forty cat
This is seconds cat

Now go back and read the THIRD word
in each line from the top.
LMAO

OH MY GOD! lol I stumbled on this youtube clip it is so cool seriously. It's like a stereogram but in motion. You have to do this one folks! It's the cross eye technique. I think it is as good as avatars 3d effects lol. You can watch it full screen and really decent quality on youtube for maximum effect. There's a tutorial at the start so you should be able to get it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBa-bCxsZDk&feature=related

Another, just random environment stuff, can be tricky every time it changes scene eyes tend to refocus. some nice 3d effects though. Must find some crazy action scenes!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAbisOKNVyY&feature=related

Beginning to ponder effects of sitting here with my eyes crossed for ages lol

Rollercoaster!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4s6WoREpg&feature=related

Um yeah it's a bit bizarre but some slow motion 3d effects and they are very high quality, as with all these vids I'd suggest full screen!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTFKtVQGWIg&feature=related

Again kinda random but some very nice 3d effects going on! That's it for this post lol I think you can mull through those lot for now, my eyes are feeling a bit mangled!

I'm not sure but you could be trying too hard lol although I doubt that makes sense. The eyes tend to do most of the work automatically. Just pointing them in the right direction should get some sort of reaction. Once it is focused the centre image is 100% crystal clear while the two on either side are blurry. I guess just keep trying, I'm so used to it it just happens very quickly mostly.2010-05-08 04:25:00

I quoted your post to make sure that wasn't a gif... wow, lol, that's the most powerful motion illusion I've seen yet.

I also love this one,
Add up the row of numbers out loud, going from top to bottom.

1000
20
30
1000
1030
1000
+ 20
---------
? ? ? ?

The answer is 4100, NOT 5000 or any other number you may have got
ok last one,
Does a dark grey block appear to rest on a light gray block?
Cover the middle to find out.

Not quite an illusion but try this:
Count how many letters F's appear in the CAPS sentence. Make sure to conceal you answer by putting it in spoilers or by coloring it white.

Very cool pictures, some of them I've not seen before.
You might like MC Esther; he's a painter who painted many illusions back in the 20's, and also drew that one picture up there with the two hands drawing each other.
