Escape LBUPThisIsInsane
My entry for the Ultimate Platformer contest. The setting is inside a mountain, and you have to escape. Leap over pits of lava, get through a magnetic field with floating rocks, and platform your way to victory!!!
I actually was going to make this level about twice as long, but I ran out of time and was forced to finish it earlier than planned. After the Ultimate Platformer contest is over, I plan to un-publish it and make it longer and improve the overall gameplay. Anyways, it's inside a mountain (like all my other levels). I was originally going to make it so you get out of the mountain, but I ran out of time as mentioned above. This is my first level that has no story whatsoever, it's more just a race to the end. I would upload a photo I took, but it's so blurry you can hardly tell it's a PSP. Hope you enjoy!!!

Awesome stuff ThisIsInsane! I would give this a try now, but I am just logging off for the night, and I should have hit the sack about an hour ago. I will give it a try tomorrow though! I'm very excited to check it out 2010-05-05 16:44:00

Hey ThisIsInsane!!

Another really fun level from you. You have a knack at making levels that I flat out enjoy playing, and this was no exception.

I am good at races and when I saw the starting gate I got all giddy!! The race through the mountain was a joy and quite hectic too. I was often presented the choice of going for point bubbles, slightly off the path or to just plow through to the finish, well I had to go after every last one of them. I played this level maybe six times and I kept getting faster and faster and I ended up with 7000 points or so, and the high score (I beat the number two guy by a mile!!) I also have the high score in your other race level so I plan on checking back regularly on this one to see if anyone has beat me.

Five stars plus a heart, and good luck in the contest my friend!!

I'm really glad you liked the race. I wasn't sure if many people would like the inside of a mountain style. You ever have those feelings? Like, you work hard on a level, then publish it, and you wonder what they will think of it? Well, you just made my day.

I was often presented the choice of going for point bubbles, slightly off the path or to just plow through to the finish, well I had to go after every last one of them.
I had tried to place them so that you had to go slightly off course to get them. From all the testing I did, I figured out that's it's usually better to skip the bubbles, that is, if you want a good score.

I played this level maybe six times and I kept getting faster and faster and I ended up with 7000 points or so, and the high score (I beat the number two guy by a mile!!)
Wow, haha. Six times? So you're a high score freak?

Five stars plus a heart, and good luck in the contest my friend!!
Awesome, man! Thanks for the feedback so soon! Good luck to you too!!!

Yeah, it's a shame, but I think some people are rating the entries for the Ultimate Platformer contest really low, whether or not the level is good.

But u proved me wrong! the puzzles were awesome! especially the rotating rock platform things
Sweet! And you liked the, er, rotating rock platform things?! That's really awesome, because I spent a lot of time on that, and then it got destroyed. Then I made it again. Anyways, it didn't turn out exactly like I was hoping, but I guess it's pretty cool... Glad you enjoyed it.

good luck!
And good luck to you too!!!!

Thanks for playing my level and leaving some feedback here! I really appreciate it!!

Hidy Ho ThisIsInsane!

I told you I'd leave feedback tonight, and here I am

I finally got to wind down from the day and give this level a good try. It was a blast! I loved the fact that the level is an intense race, but it is also a great level!

There were some great ideas tossed in, like the room with the 2-way switch that you pulled and changed everything in the room (so you backtracked and went through another way). You did a GREAT job with the arrows there!

Also, the magnetic area was great. I loved how you explained that, and the rocks really did feel like they were affected by a magnetic field. Awesome stuff!

Overall, the level was great. I had a blast with it Awesome work, and good luck with the competition!!!

Great! I'm extremely glad you liked it! It's different than my usual style, but I'm happy with how it turned out overall.

I spent a lot of time in that room. First for getting all the wobble bolts right, then getting the switch working. I actually had trouble with the switch not activating on of the bolts, so I had to attach a magnetic key to the lever of the switch. It all worked out OK, though. And a great job with the arrows? That's cool, 'cause I wasn't sure if I was quite direct enough though. I decided to make the one (while you're backtracking) ice, so that it would be (quite literally) impossible to miss.

Also, the magnetic area was great. I loved how you explained that, and the rocks really did feel like they were affected by a magnetic field. Awesome stuff!
Heh, I actually had no plan for a magnetic area. I just attached those platforms by springs and then thought, Wait, that's sort of random... I then came up with the magnetic field idea, and it turned out pretty well I think!!! Do you think I overdid the stickers right before the magnetic area?

Overall, the level was great. I had a blast with it Awesome work, and good luck with the competition!!!

Awesome! And thanks, too bad I can't say good luck back!
One question: Do you think I have too many stickers at the finish computer thingy???

Thanks for playing and taking the time to kindly leave a review!!!

Wow, haha. Six times? So you're a high score freak?

Most definitely, I always try to a play my favorite levels until I at least get on the scoreboard, but with good race levels, It is almost an obsession to get first place. I actually checked out the level first thing this morning to see if I still had it and someone had beat my score. Well, I played this level at least fifteen more times today and got it back.

I beat your score too Buddy!!

You know you have a good level when someone plays it over twenty times in less than one day.

Great stuff man, great stuff.

Hi, ThisIsInsane! WOW! I had much fun with you new level! It has very cool platforming part and nice design. You create smart obstacles and good chalange part. Backtracking part is also very good idea! So I gave you 5 stars and heart for this level (creator's heart from me you already have ).

And good luck with the competition!

Cool! I'm glad you liked the backtracking. It's the first time I ever had it in a level, but I think it turned out pretty good. And you liked the design? Awesome. Thanks for playing this level and leaving feedback Domik!!!

And good luck with the competition!
Thanks!

Hello, ThisIsInsane-

First off, I like how you added the points over the fire, so you would have to bouce off the fire just right, that was ingenious! enjoyed the race, it had a lot of fun platforming, and was always the perfect challenge level for me. I alsoliked the ending, the scoreboard was decorated in a very nice fashion. Overall, this was a really fun platforiming level. Good luck with the contest.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star:.

Heh, I'm glad you liked it!!! I actually accidentally bounced off the fire onto the next platform when testing it, and I thought it would be cool to add that.

That's good to hear, especially since the contest I entered is for platforming levels. And I'm glad you liked the challenge level too. I wasn't sure if it was too hard or too easy at some parts, but I decided to just publish it.

Cool. I wasn't sure if I overdid it with the stickers, but I thought it looked neat. At least better than no stickers whatsoever. I'm really glad that you enjoyed this level. Thanks for taking time to leave some feedback!!!

Heh, thanks! Although, I must say, I would have been a whole lot happier though if you won too! I mean, you're the platformer king!!! If I was the judge, you'd be one of the winners for sure! BTW, congrats on winning jeffcu's award! I couldn't help but look at the trophy he gave you in the VM, and that is WAY cooler than a ribbon sticker!

I really appreciate the kind words. I just love making levels, and more than anything I love playing good levels, and this competition had so many great levels. The winners are all very deserving of the honor. You made a killer level and you should be proud.

Jeff's award is pretty cool. I have already posted the image in my Sugar Roots thread.

Later Buddy!!

First off, congrats for winning LBUP, and apologies for not giving feedback sooner...

I liked the environment, so no worries there The landscaping was good, especially the dynamic sections. The 'evolving maze' approach was impressive, I wish that kind of thing came as easily to me!

I did feel the level could've done with a few more stickers and a little tidying up with the corner editing, but as you say, you were pushed for time... so I can't wait to see the updated version.

Oh, and those magnetic platforms... killed me over and over and over. Literally about 30 times The last couple of jumps are pretty awkward, it's a miracle I ever made it to the scoreboard at all! But then I'm hopeless, so that could just be me!

Overall, great stuff, and a well deserved win

Wow, thanks. It's quite an honor to have one of my absolute favorite creators say that.

Haha, yeah, it's awesome. He really is a pro at stuff like that. And I definitely think that it deserves to be in your level thread, in fact, I'm gonna check it out now.

Thanks, 'grats to you too!!!

I'm glad you liked the environment. I had trouble deciding between two different main materials, but I finally decided to use one of them as the main material, and the other one just a little bit. And the evolving maze? I'm guessing you mean the part where you pull the switch, and the path changes thanks to wobble bolts? I'm glad you liked it, I spent a while on it, and actually had a lot of trouble with it. Oh, and it doesn't really come easy to me. I was sort of just experimenting with wobble bolts there, but hey, glad you liked it.

I did feel the level could've done with a few more stickers and a little tidying up with the corner editing, but as you say, you were pushed for time... so I can't wait to see the updated version.

Well, I tried to put in more stickers, but I honestly couldn't find anything that really could use stickers that would fit the level well. I will definitely try to put more stickers in the updated version, though. And I actually left the corner-editing that way on purpose, so that it would feel like you're inside a natural cave, instead of a man-made one. However, if you think it'll look better with better corner-editing, I will most certainly tidy it up a bit in the next version. Thanks for pointing that out! I always say negative but honest feedback is better than positive but not honest feedback - not that this feedback is all that negative.

Haha, I know. I actually had a lot of trouble with them myself. I think I'm gonna try to make it a little easier, but I like challenges, so not too easy

Overall, great stuff, and a well deserved win

Thanks man! I'm positive your level deserves it too, from just looking at the pictures. I will be sure to check it out when I have the time (which may, in all honesty, be quite a while )...

Thanks again for playing my level and leaving some feedback!!!

No problem dude Sometimes I worry my feedback sounds too critical, I'm glad you didn't feel that way!

Re: corner editing - most of it is fine, it was the bit around the scoreboard that stood out

Re: stickers - Not really essential, though I feel it would help to make each area feel more recognisable (which helps a lot in a race level)... perhaps just a few arrows pointing the way, and maybe the occasional cave painting? Or maybe just using the black gradient sticker to add shadows beneath overhangs... of course these things are all purely subjective and now I'm probably just trying to turn YOUR level into MY level, haha

In all seriousness, wonderful level, the more I play it the more I like it, and that's always a good thing.
