With emitters, it emits a single thing.

With sounds, it plays once.

With pistons set to flipper, it flippers once.

Etc.

What exactly does the option on switches one shot do?

It causes the switch to emit a single spike, or pulse output (delta-function, for you math geeks) when the switch's input condition is met. In other words, if the switch is initially OFF (not inverted), then when its input condition is met while set to "One Shot" output mode, it will turn ON *breifly*, then shut OFF again.

There are multiple applications, the most common of which are to activate pistons set to "Flipper" mode (these *require* a One-Shot input), or to activate (kill) a protected creature brain (and what it's connected to it).

No, you will need a permanent switch for that. Search out the 'Logic Pack' in game to learn more.

If the door's piston/winch is NOT set to Flipper mode, then you won't be able to connect a switch to it that is set to "One Shot"; or if you change the output of the switch after it's been connect, the wires will turn RED (hint, hint). If the door's piston/winch IS set to Flipper mode, then it will "flip" open quickly, then reset to closed.

To open a door (once), such that it remains open thereafter, the activating switch's output first goes to a Permanent switch (Perm-Switch), who's (Directional; <-/->) output, in turn, goes to the door mechanism. The LBPCentral Logic Packs contain two varieties of permanent switches.
