Rain of Pain (Survival Challenge)VelcroJonze
Bubbles, bombs, and fireballs, all on an electric conveyor. A good old fashioned pointfest.
I've been wanting to publish a new survivor challenge for a while and I thought, now is as good as time as any, so here it is.

The name is a direct nod to my other survival challenge Swings of Pain on my old psn odomodometer.

Enjoy!!

Hidy Ho VelcroJonze! I guess that I get to be the first feedback Woo-hoo!

I gave the level 6 or 7 tries (enough to beat your high score), so I certainly gave it a good amount of playtime (I probably spent as much time on it as I do on most levels after all those playthroughs).

Though I haven't made a Survival Challenge on PSP, I did make a super complex one on PS3 called Bombs and Sunshine Challenge. I know... it sounds like another bomb survival level I actually made the level a while before the bombs survival trend began, but sadly, I think that the bomb survival trend has sort of given my level a bad name even though it has nothing to do with those stupid levels.

So, I say all of that to let you know that I know what it is like making a survival challenge. It can be difficult, because you want to increase the level of difficulty as the player plays the level, but you don't want to kill them in a cheap way. You also want to introduce new challenges into the level as they play to keep it fresh so that it doesn't just become a boring trip of a level.

I thought that this level handled things pretty well. It is a bit on the simple side for a Survival Challenge in my opinion. I liked the idea of an electric conveyor belt, and the way the platforms came out with the cluster of bubbles on them actually looked really nice I also liked how fireballs and other clusters of bubbles would fall down and knock the clusters of bubbles around and also mess up the arrangement of the platforms. This all made it more difficult to pick up a combo.

My only issue with the level is that I had no way of knowing where the fireballs were going to come from. Maybe if I played it 20 or 30 times then I could figure out the pattern, but that isn't really the point of a survival challenge. It would have been awesome if maybe there were cannons lining the top of the screen and you warned the player as to which cannon was going to shoot a fireball. The cannons could be turning from side to side, so as soon as a warning comes up, the player would need to get out of the line of fire. As time passes, multiple cannons could shoot at the same time. This way, the challenge increases, but the player understands where the danger is coming from. You already had the fireballs coming down at an increasing rate (I think), so it seems that you are sort of doing what I am saying, the only difference is that the play has no idea what is coming next and from where.

I really did like the level the way it is (seeing as I played until I got the high score), I just wanted to toss in my feelings about not knowing where the danger was coming from and when. It just seemed that when I finally got the high score, it was all due to luck, and not really due to skill.

Awesome work on another level VJ! I really did enjoy it

Hi, VelcroJonze!

Thank for new well done level. I just finished it and took sixth place! Actually I don't like Survivor Challenges, but you did all things very good and it is very fun to play your level. Maybe Poo advice will do this level more better but right now it is very cool to play it too. So I easily gave you 5 stars for this level! And Good Luck with you future levels.

Oooo!!!! Sounds brilliant!I Will definetly play this level when I get home! This gives me an idea for my own survival challenge hopefully it isn't too much like yours! Generally I don't play survival challenges, mainly because they either aren't built very well or some person always manages to go on for ever, leaving everyone else to scramble for second, third and so on. I'll check it out later and give you feedback soon!2010-05-04 13:59:00

Hey Velcro!
Very fun to play, although the visuals did look a bit rushed (I'm very picky when it comes to visuals), but I suppose you must have gotten a bit bored after placing thousands of motor bolts along the bottom. It was really hard getting a combo, and what really annoyed me is that I kept on falling onto the track while trying to get the bubbles inbetween the platforms! It is very challenging, but that's the fun of it! I am still trying to beat everyone that's played it!

This was a really fun level and just like poo, i spent ages tryin to beat ur score. I found that the bombs were way to cheap wen they killed u. maybe u could have put on a square bomb thing(whats it called again?) and have it timed to blow up

it was very fun though!
i hope youll make more minigames

Hey VJ! My first thought when I saw this was, "A survival challenge? That is SO not Velcro." But it actually turned out extremely well for not being your normal style of level!

Well, the very first time I tried it, I missed the platforms and landed on the electrified conveyor belt. I got a whopping score of 0. But this only happened once, so I don't believe there is anything you need to fix. Anyways, everything looked really nice, especially with your unique visuals that your levels usually have. I once upon a time tried to make a conveyor belt in LBP, but I gave up. I can't believe that I was so stupid and you can simply use circles attached to motor bolts, but oh well. That level is history now (thanks to the corruption bug). Wow, I'm getting way off topic. Back to the level!

The most difficult thing to create in a survival challenge, I think, is one: originality. Something that is new and unusual. There are honestly so many survival challenges out there that it's hard to come up with an idea that isn't already published in a different level. Thankfully, though, this was not like anything I have ever played before in LBP, but in an extremely good way. The other thing difficult about survival challenges is difficulty. I mean, obviously, it's good if you can make it get increasingly harder, but how hard do you start? You don't want it too easy, but you don't want people rating it only one star because it was insanely, well, insane. Again, this is something that you did a very good job in. It started at, in my opinion, the best difficulty for a survival challenge to start at, but it got increasingly harder. And it didn't take a half hour to get hard, which is nice. So great job on some of the hardest parts of a survival challenge!!!

This level was a blast to play, one that is actually fun (like all your other levels) to play again. And again. And again (until you have the high score ). The only complaint I have is at the end of your level, at the computer end-thingy (you know what I mean). The checkpoint was kinda, well, in the way. Maybe you could raise it a little, so you drop down on, er, computer thingy? It was fine the way it was, but it is something that could improve your level (I couldn't find anything else). All in all, this is how I view you: . Haha, well, as a creator, anyways.

:star::star::star::star::star: + <3 for you!!!! Awesome level, I look forward to every single one!!!

seeing as I played until I got the high score
Ha, I beat your score!!!

Thanks for all the awesome feedback guy's.

This is a pleasant surprise, I didn't think it would be this well received.

Tip - Combos are the key, every platform that appears from the left has three bubbles on it, save up as many as you can and then go for the big chain.

About the lack of warning for the bombs....... I tried angling the camera upwards to give a better view of the incoming dangers but it just looked awful.

I swear I will check this level out, but my game save acted up and I had transfer my back up data into action.
Although, I didn't do it, until now.

I will be sure to check this level out though!

I will start by saying, I can't really leave a big amount of feedback on this level.
Since it's pretty small.

The mechanics seemed very good, but just at least how I imagined.
Not very much to say, but to be honest, no hard feelings, I didn't like the level much.
I'm not into survival challenges, as you can see, I'll never make one.... maybe...
The level was pretty fun, just stay in place and avoid getting hit, or missing a jump.
Basic survival challenge, but I wasn't really into it that much.

Like I said, I don't know how to put a big amount of feedback for a small level, because my feedback is usually step by step.
The level was awesome, no problems at all, which is good.
I didn't make a highscore, but overall, 5 stars. Yeah, I will heart it, just because your VelcroJonze.

Until we meet a again,

Hey I look forward to playing it. I'm yet to find a good survival challenge on psp.

PS. The term is Survival not survivor. Doesn't matter but people usually label the genre survival challenge.

This looks like fun, I'm loading the level right now. OK, first off, I like your choice of materials. Also, I like your choice of music, it really fits a survival challenge level sort of feel. I like how if you survive long enough the fireballs start raining down. The name of the level fits perfectly. I just died, with a wimpy score of 789. Overall, this was a fun survival challenge with a nice feel to it. Keep up the great work.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and gave it a <3.

Hey Vj
Well, after playing your last lot of levels, I thought I'd give your latest a spin. Let me start with saying it's a lot of fun, and has that just one more time hook to it which is great for a survival game. As I've mentioned about some of your previous levels, I felt the visuals were a bit reserved. Not bad, not well thought out, just a bit on the plain side. I just feel that you have this awesome ability to decorate a level, and are afraid to use it. For example, on this level, you could have made the game visually more appealing by making the plain wood planks into buns, the conveyor belt a bbq grill, and had falling ingredients like burning onions or Jalapenos, and the background a diner window complete with order up bell. See, same survival, but with a more distinct visual appeal that may draw in more people that normally do not like survival challenges. Alot of people judge levels on looks alone, so you may have had a few not even give the level a second after the first play because they didn't feel that visual attraction. I played it several times, and enjoyed it everytime. I don't know what place I'm in though. Dead last I'm sure lol. Keep up the great work VJ

Hey Spark, thanks for playing and leaving feedback. I know what you are saying, survivor challenges are not my thing either, I know a lot of people do like them, I just really wanted to make one. I doubt I will make anymore anytime soon though, it's really hard to think of something original in that genre. The ps3 is cluttered with plenty of bad ones.

Hey thanks again for the play and the heart my friend!!

I can't believe I wrote surivor.

I know it's survival too because I have two other challenges on my old account... oh, well.

Hey kaiju, I do appreciate your honesty on this level. This was just something I put together in an afternoon. And I absolutely love your idea of the grill in a diner. That would be totally awesome. For my next level, I am going to explore a lot of different ways to create, and hopefuly come up with something totally unexpected..
