What kind of levels do you make?

Archive: 37 posts

Races, survivals, minichallenges, costume levels, H4H levels, short levels or long and great adventure with a lot of gameplay?
Or do you do only one kinds or all kinds of levels?

I mostly make adventure and survival levels. The adventure levels I make tend to be connected since I like to create a nerrative with a sort of story arc to follow but the problem is I tend to never be satisfied enough with one of them and thus don't publish any of the levels related to it and as a result I've literally put all the adventure levels I've made on the backburner.
Survival levels I make because those tend to be the ones that are most accessable to people new to LBP and are the type of levels I show to people who come over to my house to get a feel of the game and keep them entertained, as a long, sprawling level wouldn't be the best thing to play in the midst of a real life party or something.

I've never made costume or H4H levels and probably never will, but I may create some giveaway levels in the future just to give a chance for the many objects I've made for never published levels to see the light of day.

I prefer to create levels with atmospheres to make up for my lack of skill with making gameplay.
And I have a giveaway level. :kz:

Mainly story driven levels, mostly inspired by other games but I try to put my own spin on them. I have done a couple original concepts (I've only published 4 levels). I am usually very ambitious and my levels are very short but packed.2010-05-04 20:23:00

I like to create realistic levels, but since I'm not good at creating "realistic" levels "fun". Instead I create something that just pops into my mind 2010-05-04 20:34:00

I'm a new creator, but all the levels I've been making/plan on making are always meant for story and visuals with some gameplay that fit the setting.2010-05-05 04:44:00

I like making versus levels. I don't like the way LBP's camera fights me when I create versus levels. I make the camera bend to my (and the player's) will as much as I can.

I also like making weird levels. I'm currently working on a very odd platformer level with a very, very odd plot.

The work I've been creating lately has a more flashy, cartoonish style that involve lots of player interaction and exlporing. I can't say I have a set theme since, well... all of my levels are different. The first level I ever published was SUPER cheesy. Then the next was just a character level (with a rather vicious dog... ). And the latest thing I ever published (for the LBPC: FOHG contest), it's very cartoony and filled with many tricky, simple mechanics. I just create whatever comes to mind (and whatever I have the attention span to finish... ).

I have plans on making an entire level that you play upside-down (along with upside-down physics and fighting), but haven't gotten around ot it yet. Any takers? :arg:

-As the self-proclaimed "Master of the Shinan" i am obliged to make levels of high difficulty.
No but seriously, i think difficulty lrevels are best ecause you're ACTUALLY playing the game and not just press ing forward.

-I've been trying my hand at survival levels as well, but have one out only so far,

-I've also gotten a lot into costume meaking, and am working on a massive costume gallery that shall contain hundreads of costumes (it already has over 200)

So yeah, i got 2 music levels too, but i don't enjoy making music levels as much.

Blue! ...I think my better ones have quite a bit of blue in them.

Nah.. I dunno.. I just make whatever I feel like, but I do like making story levels of sorts.

Upside down physics? Are you saying sackboy can play while walking on the ceiling? And by ceiling I mean top of the screen with sackboy upside down walking on it. If that is what you meant how?! Since I have never encountered a level like this I'm doubting it is possible

I make levels with absolutely no game play in them whatsoever!

And the Frog Chorus is one of my favorites!

Honestly, I myself prefer a level with rich chocolatey mood to tons of fun-filled gameplay. It's great that there are audiences for both in this game.

Up until now I've attempted to mix the 2 in my levels, but if I do ever get back into creating, I'm definitely going to go less gameplay, more mood/visuals. Simply because I'm not so good at the "fun-filled" part when it comes to gameplay.

and let's be honest, lately the type of levels I've been making are non-existent. Or invisible. yeah, that's it. Invisible levels.

I make all types of levels. I usually get bored of a theme after I complete a level, so I dont generally (but am doing, how ironic) sequels.
I love this quote that I heard somewhere that somehow reminds me of building a level: 'amateurs practice to get it right, experts practice so they can't get it wrong.'

At heart I'm a sucker for visuals!
I like creating atmospheric, story driven levels! I love playing with lights and adding little dumb details that nobody notices
I've been learning to compromise a bit and add more gameplay... slowly but surely!

Im completely random with the levels i like to make. Every one is and will be different from the last. I want to have a library of levels that is diverse. But youll never see me publish a level that is all gameplay and no theme/ atmosphere.2010-05-07 19:38:00

Platformer is my DNA. I hate making story levels imo because I don't know what I do well. Also I like challanges (score or survival), so yea, I don't do story levels, just Platformers and challanges2010-05-09 23:07:00

Hmm my last level that i made was a story level, it was my best level (It was still very bad to most people ) I have made a race level too so pretty much i have only made 2 levels but i plan on a 3rd! i have made a few other levels but im pretty sure they are walking in a straight line and another is glitched so you start at the end but it wasn't good anyways!2010-05-10 15:04:00

I make overly hard platforming levels with minimal amounts of story that usually end up with very low ratings and a bad community response because they are of such challenging difficulty. I'm good at creating an attractive visual style, but bad at creating gameplay that is unique and of a "universal" difficulty level. I also have a soft spot for survival challenges, so I've made a few of them too.2010-05-12 20:31:00

I normally try to make generic platformers, but I'm going out on a limb and making a properly working RPG. I want to see if it can be done well on LBP 1's engine. So far its looking good. The logic has a few kinks in it, but I'm making progress. Hopefully I can get some pictures up soon. The story and visuals are half the fun, so I'm trying to do well with that too.2010-05-14 03:51:00

I always something different even if all we do is always having platforming roots of course...

Dig It! --- 2 players mini-game
Sack's In The City and Sack's On The Beach --- adventure
Crazy Train --- highscore challenge
Beginners and Girlfriends --- easy platformer
A Bark In The Dark --- platformer + sidekick for sackboy
Space Sack's Adventures: The Blue Planet --- platformer with "Metroid style" layout
