Hickory dickory dock...

I'm going to try and build a level set inside a grandfather clock. It would be mostly vertical-ascent style, with tons and tons of interlocking cogs, springs, and weights on chains to ride up and down on. The grand finale will be set at the top of the clock - I'm going to try to build a working mechanical escapement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchor_escapement)! I won't make it too spooky, but I think cute little mice and comedy spiders would be suitable enemies to fight. I just hope there'll be suitable sound effects...!2008-10-04 14:15:00

You know, that could be a very, very cool level if you do it right. Lots of gears, that kind of thing. And it would fit in pretty much perfectly with LBP as a whole, theme-wise.2008-10-04 17:53:00

Thanks! I'd quite like to make it a level that's all about running about, jumping from weight to weight, messing up the workings of the cogs, and generally being silly. With puzzles too of course, but mainly it'll be all about the silly.

I wonder how tall I could/should make the clock?

*sigh* There are no new ideas under the sun. Well, at least I never claimed it was an original idea!

I can only hope to make my level look a bit "clockier" and atmospheric than that Mario level, which looks more like a nuclear reactor than a clock. I can honestly say I've never played Mario64, but if anything, I was inspired by this great old Mickey Mouse cartoon, which is packed with more top-quality ideas than that Mario level!

If you manage to get the whole level to work in time with the actual clock itself using gears etc. then you are a genius. Also, when you say there's going to be a grand finale, do you mean that there will be a boss fight there?2008-10-06 13:43:00

I think creating a working clock in LBP would indeed be a little beyond my capabilites. Making an anchor escapement would be pretty tough as it is, I think, but if I can pull that off then I might have a go at more complex machines. They probably won't all run off the same mechanism, but they won't have to in order to make a cool level, and I'm sure I can link them together in a convincing and fun way.

In any case, I have some good ideas for traps and puzzles involving pendulums, weights and gears that should make things fun and keep everything in the 'clock' aesthetic. I don't know what the 'grand finale' might entail just yet, but I think that it would probably be a tricky (but satisfying) puzzle, or perhaps a boss fight of some kind, if I can think of a boss that fits with the theme.

A level about demon ducks vomiting sushi-ridden streams of happiness in a ghetto area painted entirely in purple, turquoise and indigo inhabited by aliens in stereotypical Scottish attire.

Yeah, true. I was just hushing up the people marking you some sort of genius. ^_^

How dare you badmouth Mario 64, You hath incurred the wrath of Chaz'oSulls. Your fate is sealed!

That toon was cool. The very definition of old school Disney. I have high hopes for your level now so tell us when you're done and I'll be the first to check it out. ^_^

Aw, come on, you have to admit that Mario 64 level doesn't look like a clock in the slightest.

I actually had a similar idea, but instead of a granfather clock, I want to do a clock tower. Like one that would stand in the center of a city.2008-10-21 04:47:00

Well it won't be ALL mice, mainly clock-mechanics based puzzles... but who knows!2008-10-24 15:58:00
