Top Down Racer/ RC Racer Mini-Game (PICTURES)

Archive: 40 posts

I was thinking about making a Racing Mini Game to display in an upcoming level. Something to inspire ideas for different games and levels that could be made in substitute for those pesky Bomb/Shark Survivals and Obstacle Course races.

I want to make it where the player is NOT in the car in order to control it. I want it to be remotely. All four players should be able to play with individual cars. In order to control the vehicle, Players would step into a sort of Cockpit where upon grabbing, a camera would activate to focus their attention on the car. Players would steer the vehicle by grabbing and pulling a sponge left or right. The car would move in the direction it is facing at a controllable speed. Players would have to maneuver around turns, avoiding traps, and driving over Speed Boosts in order to take the lead and score more bubbles than their opponents. Appropriate bubbles would be dispensed depending on finishing place. Number of completed laps would be able to be customized, as well as the size of the track, etc etc.

I hope to be able to make this while maintaining a low amount of Thermo intake.

ALRIGHT! I got some pictures up, available HERE: http://img693.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=aphotow.jpg
Within are the designs for the basic track and steering system.

The Track is set up in a basic circular track with a dissolve gate. The Gate is set up with a magnetic switch set to a 180 degree activation area. The emitter next to it constantly refreshes the gate so that players may not make an incorrect lap. As shown with the piston, the player may only approach from below in order to pass through. Once close enough, the gate will dissolve and the emitter will not be able to emit a new gate until the player has passed. After they do, the gate will reappear and force the player to continue forward.
Also displayed is the steering prototype. A small block of glass material is set between two panes of glass and attached to low strength springs in order to add some resistance. The glass block holds a magnetic key that will activate either switch, both of which are set to speed. The sponge attached lets the player pull the block either way, and as demonstrated with the LED Lights, will determine which direction the car will turn. The grab switch on the sponge is meant to be attached to a camera zone which will set focus on the track.

This is still very prototype and subject to some serious changes.

Sounds amazing but you might have to pull upon the glory of the logic gods of LBP. Rtm223, for instance.

Idea: All 4 players on jetpacks with tiny chains in enclosed spaces to allow for vertical movement as well as horizontal.

The main problem with this level would be the fact that the lead car can never be allowed to get too far ahead because of the shared camera in LBP. Also, if a player decided to stop, the race would halt.

You see, that's what I want to avoid. I want to make it so that you control the cars -remotely- rather than manually. There's already enough of that around, so I'm trying to get away from it and try to make people think outside the box (Almost literally in this case)

But I will see if I can't get a hold of Rtm223 and his peers.

I don't mean put the players in the cars. I mean put them in stationary boxes that move a LITTLE. Because think about how boring your race would be if you could never "get ahead of the pack". I mean you need the controls to allow the cars to move "forward" (up). This can be made intuitive by allowing the player to press the left stick UP and their car above goes UP.

Or some other way to allow this to happen. Like two 3-way switches (one for vertical movement and the other for horizontal) but you'd still need tethered jet packs to let the players operate them quickly.

I'm just trying to say you need more controls than left/right.

I just know that I wouldn't heart a race level in which all the cars are glued together.

When did I say that they would be all glued together?

The idea for the control system will look kinda like this

________________
{D| ooooooo[]ooooooo|{D

o = spring(?) / wench(?)
{D = Magnetic Key
[] = sponge

There would be a key switch on the sponge and you would have to drag it left or right in order to steer. I've been attempting to mess with it to where you would turn faster the closer it gets to the switch, but I haven't been successful. The Speed property doesn't work quite well, otherwise I just cant get it to work. I also intended on adding a grab switch to the sponge that would make the car move.
Each car would be completely independent from the others.

My problem is actually getting the control set-up to work correctly. But every time I put it together, the Piston or Winch I use always overpowers the other and I doesn't sustain forward motion. It always tries to turn the last direction it was told to. Which is a serious bug :/

I guess I'm just not good at explaining things anymore, but if I can get some pictures up, then I'm sure it'll be made clear.

I actually intend them to rotate the full 360.

Nice!

I assume the cars are always going forward and the players only control steering?

I thought about doing something similar myself a while back, so if you manage to pull this off i'll be impressed.

Its complicated. I would love to allow full control of the car, but if I can't fit acceleration in, then yes.

Thank you. It'll definitely be a tough job, and I'm personally not sure I can do it, but I'll do my best!

What would that be?

This is really the underlying problem of all projects akin to this.

What would happen if I decided to turn around and my friend didn't? All players in LBP share a camera, so ONE of us (or both) would be driving blind.

Well then I must have explained the Camera idea a little wrong.
The camera wont be like a blank magic mouth honed in on the first player, more like a Camera View that will focus on the track, rather than the players. The view should encompass the entire track so if a player did want to mess around and turn their race into a game of Bumper Cars, then you'd be fine!

Another problem that I got from that question is that: if you turned around, would the lap count?

My idea would be No. I thought of the idea and figured that I could attach Magnetic Keys onto the cars and make a Dissolve Material that would dissolve any time a car passes by the RIGHT direction (by using the handy-dandy Angle property). I really wish I was far enough in to actually show pictures of it, but I'm still having a lot of trouble getting the steering system work...

... I really need to talk to rtm ...

OH!

Sound's GREAT, then.

The "Top Down Racer" part in the title threw me off. Sounds like a good level!

Logic isn't my forte (although I know the basics) but I'd love to help/share ideas in-game.

As for the steering system, try setting the strength of the winches/pistons to 0. Then you can drag the sponge with no resistance!

Well that's dandy for the steering control, but its hard to translate that into motion on the RC.
I sent a message to rtm yesterday, so I'm looking forward to his response.
I certainly hope he says he'll help out.

That is a generous offer, but personally I think it would be better to do this together than in pieces sent between us.
I still haven't heard back from RTM. I need to check around and see if he sent me a message from somewhere different xD

I've just made a top-down racer section myself but it's impossible to do it how you want to simply because of the camera problem.

The camera doesn't zoom out anywhere near far enough. The track would have to be tiny to fit it all in the viewing field.

Good luck with that.

Where there's a will, there's a way, my good friend.
If I can get someone with more experience with logic, I'm positive that I'll be able to make. But as I have stated, all of those designs are prototype and subject to change. Thanks for your concern, though.

On the contrary, the camera zooms out far enough. And the cars can be smaller.

Fray, you're going to have to worry about racer collision.

Actually I figured I wouldn't worry about it xD You can crash into each other in a real RC car, so why not here?

Just kidding. I thought about tossing in a Respawn system in there so that if any cars get broken, they will respawn at the beginning or something.

I completely agree.
I would love to be the one guy who made what you can do in the second game with what they gave in the first. That would be insane.
