Body Mechanics!

Archive: 8 posts

I posted a blog entry a while ago about a level I was working on. So I thought it may be beneficial to post a topic on it here as well. I've been trying to think of gameplay elements that take place inside a body, such as hitting nerves to trigger things in the body. I have quite a few ideas already but I was wondering if any of you guys had any ideas? I would be grateful to hear any you have.2010-04-29 21:07:00

Some kind of puzzle where you have to rotate the eyeballs to look at something might be fun. I'll give it some thought and see what else I can come up with.

jeffcu28 is our resident anatomy expert... Maybe he can think of some some clever biological puzzles.

Hmmm... I can't really think of a mechanic, but it would be funny if the level started with sackboy inside a pill and it falls into the level and splits open and out comes sackboy! This may not work though because the pill would have to be pretty big in order to fit the starting gate in.2010-04-30 04:21:00

Yeah, I was figuring you would fight germs. It sucks that we don't have a paintanator, so it would probably involve grabbing germs or something.

Just an idea :-)

Or you could be a pepto bismol pill and you have to make it to the intestines (starting at the mouth) and you need to conglomerate all of the poo so that the body doesn't have diahreah

Yeah... I went there. But hey, if anyone can, it should be me, right?

The level can be called Constipation :-P

Hehe. Yes poo, out of everybody here, you are the most qualified to suggest that idea!

However, I just finished playing Captain Rule's S.I.A. Mission 1: 'Take' (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=26041-S-I-A-Mission-1-Take) and I was really impressed. Fastbro, you should play it to get some inspiration for your project! That said, following the gastrointestinal route is a tough act to swallow--I mean follow--and I feel that most "body" levels deal with the GI tract anyways. Thus, it makes sense to keep it fresh and explore other systems of the body...

I like your suggestion with stimulating nerves to create actions at another location, definitely do that! Taffey's eye puzzle makes a lot of sense because the eyes are connected to the brain. I was thinking more of a puzzle based on poo's navigation mechanics in Destiny:

You can make two circle cutouts on one layer to signify a field of vision and have a moving background behind it that players can manipulate--like the universe in Destiny that you move around when you aim at a location. Players can grab neurons to control the "eye movement" as they look for something specific in the background to progress...maybe what the person ate to become sick...I also like the pill idea. Maybe the body is going haywire because of an infection, and sackboy/girl had to be shrunk to serve as a medicine for the person. There's a whole lot more you can do with the human body than the roaming around in the guts. For instance, after entering the intestines, sackboy/girl can get absorbed into the bloodstream and use blood vessels to cruise around to different locations.

The cells of the immune system are also something that most creators overlook. They make for great gameplay and characters because literature portrays them through military terminology. Maybe sackboy/girl has to pilot stealth "antibody" bombers to kill a virus, bacterium, or other parasite gnawing the spinal chord. There are also killer cells that eat everything. A lot of body parts and/or cells are named after their functions and can make for some interesting minigames within the level. For instance, memory B-cells can be a memory game! Hehe.

Maybe sackboy can enter the cell itself. DNA makes for interesting stairs, and you can portray some parts as a factory like the packaging process of the Golgi Apparatus.

I can go on forever, but I hope this has inspired you to use the different parts of the human body to its full potential, rather than merely using the digestive system like everybody else.

I'm not sure if you have the PS3, but the fantastic creator poms based a level on the reproductive system called the Miracle of Life. It's unconventional and very entertaining:

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Awesome ideas Jeff You put my silly idea to shame I really like the ideas of seeing the level through the eyes as if you are looking out from inside the head. If you need any help with tech on something like that, I might no someone who has made something like it 2010-04-30 14:21:00

Wowzers! Thanks for the ideas guys! I thought should tell what the story is about though. Basically you play as a Pirate Captain searching for treasure inside a whale. There is more to it but I don't want to give to much away.2010-04-30 20:43:00
