Have I just Discovered a New Glitch?! "Ghostly Object" Glitch.

Archive: 15 posts

I was messing around in create mode trying to build a new level.

I had placed an emitter and was in the middle of selecting where to place the emitted object (what we shall call "Ghost Objects" for now).

I had not yet placed the object, and went into the Start menu and "SAVED LEVEL".
I then quit out of my popit and "RETURNED TO POD" - on leaving I selected "discard changes".

When I then loaded up level again the 'ghostly object' was now a permanent feature of the level.
I couldn't select it - I couldn't interfere with it at all.
I deleted the original emitter and the ghostly object remained.

I am able to repeat this behaviour and have made a very rushed show case level of the glitch in question. (I had people in the room at the time who wanted me to turn off LBP so I had to rush it)

I'm not sure if it's been discovered before, if it has, I apologise for wasting your time.

But I have never seen this glitched used in any level I have ever played (that's alot of levels).
I know of almost every glitch in LBP but have never seen this one before. but I'm more willing to believe I may have missed one than I have discovered a new one.

However, after a bit of searching, I still haven't found any similar glitch levels.

Have I accidentally discovered a new glitch?

or have I accidentally discovered an old glitch?

The level is called "BRAND NEW GLITCH - "Ghostly Objects" tutorial"

Yeah, you just re-discovered an old glitch m8.

Anywho, i've investigated this one for a while, still no actuall way to fix it.
My reccomendation is to just capture your entire level as an object, or disect it into smaller pieces, capture them and place them in a new level.

Hope that helps.

Creature eyes still follow you.
Sound objects are still triggered.
The underminers drill from the Incredibles Level Kit stil spins.

Apart from the downside (can't interfere with it once placed) - it could be used to great effect to create some kind of ghostly figure.
I'm just surprised I've never come across it before.

I'll try the level later, since I never really payed any attention to it when it was first discovered. (And I thought it was only for stickers.)

So wait, can you walk through it, or is it solid? 'Cause it's pretty win-win either way.

If it's non-solid, you could make fake death machines for epic cutscenes and stuff.

If it's solid, and you're careful enough, would you be able to make a level in create mode, where you can't cheat?

By the way...

How would I go about doing it with stickers? Is that shown in the level?

Not sure how the glitch would work with stickers (I presume it would be to 'SAVE LEVEL' while you are still selecting where to place the sticker - and then quit out before actually placing it, when you reload it'll be a 'ghost sticker' - I presume?!)

But it certainly works while using an emitter, and can work with any object that can be emitted (even your own created objects);

They appear as 'ghost objects' - half transparent (as they appear when you are deciding where to place an emitted object);
All materials and sackboys pass through it as if it's not there (because technically it is not there);

What I aslo noticed was that it seems to have no effect on the Thermo Bar.
The test level loaded up several 'high thermo' objects - like the gargoyle - the underminers drill - the old skull - and it didn;t raise the thermo bar at all (?!)

I've been tinkering more with this glitch and have noticed some very unusual behaviour with it.

These ghost objects really do appear to be 'thermo free' ; they do not take up any resource from the thermo bar.

Any moving parts are out of the question - but all other switches/toggles still work.

There is a massive implication in saving thermo resource with this glitch.

I had save an entire level as an object - set this 'full level object' into an emitter - and then used the 'ghost object' glitch on that emitter.

The ghost object with the emitter still triggered (emitting the entire level) - but as the ghost object doesn;t truely 'exist' in the same way the other objects do - it showed as 0 resource on the thermo bar.

I repeat - you can emitt an entire level - and have it take up 0 resource on the thermo bar.

Doesn't anyone else see the implications of this?

I must say, I'm a bit dissapointed at the lack of interest in a glitch that has the potential to reduce the thermo usage in a level to zero.

I may have to make a new showcase level to give you all an idea of the incredible potential of this glitch (Thermo Free Objects).

What's the use of an entire "ghost" level emitted if you can't interact with it?2010-04-30 19:28:00

I only knew you could do it with decorations. So although you found an old glitch, to me, it's like the other half of a glitch I already knew.

EDIT: Can you stand on 'Ghost Objects' or are they go-throughable?

um then wouldnt that be good for people who use the 3d layers? you could have detailed bg and foregrounds. we cant touch them anyway so it would be of good use in those layers.2010-05-01 17:19:00

Ah no.
The object with the emitter attached... that is a "ghost object" - and has 0 thermo.

But the object it emits is solid - just like anything else emitted by an emitter.
All switches still work on a ghost object - just moving parts like pistons/winches/motors don't work etc.

Somehow though... you can have a complex 'real' object emitted by a 'ghost emitter' - and it doesn't count towards the thermo.

Think I'm lying?

Try it for yourself.

Capture an object and place this into an emitter.

Then use the ghost object glitch to make this emitter into a 'ghost object'

Then delete everything from your level. so all you have is the 'ghost emitter'
Notice the thermo bar should be at 0.

Then go into your level - and "hey Presto" - your object should emit as normal - but with 0 thermo resourse taken up

I need some other folks to test this out for me though... to make sure it's not something daft like the object is just cached in my own LBP save and that's why it shows as zero resource.

If I get the time tonight I will make a little test level to show you all what I mean...
'Ghost Objects' emitting 'Real Objects' at Zero Thermo Cost!

It does sound to good to be true doesn't it.

There is already a known glitch to make objects that use zero thermometer.. And although it doesn't visibly alter the thermo there is an effect, you will notice lag if you put too much into it, crashing etc. Look up how to seriously cheat the thermo by Aya042..2010-05-04 15:17:00
