Sugar RootsVelcroJonze
On a lazy walk through the Alpine, Sackboy wanders upon the outside of a strange fort buried in the snow. Could this be the start of something?
My entry for the LittleBigPlanent Ultimate Platformer contest.

It is a prelude of sorts to my Fort Sugar levels, and it is a straight up platformer with no story.

Comments are most welcome and if you have any problems please let me know.

Hi, VelcroJonze! I tried your level and find it very interesting. It has very good snow spirit and great gameplay. I had much fun searching hiding places with prise bubbles. (And I had third place in score table right now!) Level has good platforming gameplay. All madded very simple, but with very good quality. So I enjoyed it and gave you 5 stars and heart for it!2010-04-28 09:26:00

Hidy Ho VelcroJonze! Well, I finally had a chance to give your newest level a try, and here I am with some feedback

First of all, let me say that there must be some pretty pathetic competitors in this new competition. When I went to download this level and saw that it had only 3 stars, I already knew something was up. After finishing the level, I went to check on LBW to see if you had officially entered the competition, and when I saw that you had, I knew that people must be giving other competition entries 1 star ratings.

COME ON PEOPLE! The star rating doesn't have any affect on the results for the competition!!!

When I entered the WDSD competition, I actually left the level published for 1 whole week before actually posting on LBW, because I wanted the level to have a healthy number of plays before it was attacked. I'm guessing that it is just a small number of people, so our huge LBP community who LOVE yours levels should easily be able to counteract that and get you back in the 4 star range in no time

Ok, enough about that... let's get to the level:

I had a great time with Sugar Roots (and I love the name BTW ). It had the classic VelcroJonze feel, though it was a bit light on the switch-pulling and platform shooting that I am used to. I am certainly not saying that it is a bad thing, I just noticed that there seemed to be less of it for this time around. It's good to have variety in your levels, so I'd go as far as saying it might be a good thing

Everything looked great from the moment that you enter the level. I was a little surprised not to be dropped down into the level with bubbles passing by me to get me an early score multiplier (as has been the case for the Fort Sugar Series. No worries though, the intro area looked great, it had some nice multiplier possibilities, and even a secret to reach the ceiling!

After that area was a classic button press--> switch pull --> winch and sponge combo! This felt just like the VelcroJonze levels that I know and love. But there was a bit of a change after that with the spinning wheels. I liked that

There was one section where you could go left or right. You had to jump up to the left and grab a chunk of ice (???), and it would then break off and you could use it to reach a higher area to the left and get some secret bubbles. I love having secret areas to get bubbles, mainly if the mechanic to get them is as ingenious as this

The last part that I want to mention is the electrified-block-chasing-me-to-my-doom part. I loved this part, though I was a bit confused at first when smoke came out. I saw the smoke, stood there for a second, and then I actually walked toward where the smoke was right as it began chasing me (actually, I'm not 100% sure how this part worked. Does it start chasing you when you run away, or does it just take a few seconds to start chasing you no matter what you do?). It would have made an awesome video. I was sort of like a curious cat who suddenly realized that I had been examining a sleeping dog who just woke up. Anyway, even with my terrible playing in that section, I was still able to out run the full length without dying, so the timing was set up really well!

I did have one small issue here though. When I got to the end, I jumped up onto the back layer to avoid the electrified block so that I could go and get the score bubbles. Unfortunately, I ended up killing myself when I was trying to get the bubbles. When I spawned, I was on a save point that was just above where I began the chase scene. BUT, there was a sliding door blocking me now. I thought that the level was broken, because I just couldn't do anything at all. Eventually the electric block came back in, and then the door opened. All was well, but this confusion worried me, because if other more impatient people run into this, they may assume the level is broken and quit. It probably isn't a big deal, but any time that I get this confused, I start to worry about what less patient people will do

Anyway, the level ended soon after this. I fell down onto the finish line and was then crushed by the falling blocks (what a perfect ending). I still managed to get the high score, but it was a very easily beatable high score (I know that I could go back in and add at least a few hundred to that score.

This is another amazing VelcroJonze level, and I would be very surprised if it is not one of the winners. Awesome work, and good luck with the competition!

Aw, come on! Really?! You beat my score?!! And it was a bad score, you say?!! Alright, I'm gonna beat your score! And not with a "easily beatable" score!

Great level, VelcroJonze! I played it, I loved it, and I...well, I didn't review it yet, but the review is coming!

LOL, sorry ThisIsInsane, it certainly wasn't meant to be a criticism of other members, but now that you quote me, I cans see what you mean. I was trying to make it sound like I was not gloating, but it sounds more like I am saying "I got the high score, and I sucked, so everyone else really really sucks!"

The reason I said all of that is that near the end where the electrified block chases you, I was messing with that area because I had issues with it (as I mentioned in my feedback), and I probably died 5 times, which really brought my score down a lot. Plus, I'm pretty sure I could pick up a bigger combo in certain parts.

There are many things I want to say about this level.
So, I will start by saying, Great job on the platforming and "The Alpine" theme.

Your level used many materials from the Alpines, which seemed to fit great with the theme.
What makes it better is the fact that its mainly platforming. No storyline intended.
I will tell you one thing though, I do not enjoy The Alpines at all, but you've changed my mind once I played this.
(Same goes with Fastbro's level)

This level was kind of different. Not a lot, but you got the magic touch.
Have I told you you've inspired me with my contest entry? I didn't know how to make a well put them, but when I saw Tera Cora, It helped me just stick to a certain amount of materials for a theme.
That is exactly what you did with this level too.
You used basic "Alpine" materials and made an amazing level.
The level lasted quite awhile, and yet so fun to venture around.

I haven't played LittleBigPlanet in soooo looooong.
Once I played again, this level was my first to play. Then it was The Sky Islands Onrieos Ch. 2
I enjoyed you corner editing. (I mean the terrain and texture of your level)
It was well put. I have nothing more to say, but one thing.
Does your thermometer get full when finishing a level?
You should make a levevl that last very long and fun. I think you could pull this off too!

Anyways, You received 5 stars :star::star::star::star::star: and a heart.

Until we meet again,
-Spark

Thanks for your vote of confidence Poo! The rating doesn't bother me that much. I know there are people that will come with one star ratings in contests but I hope the level will stand up to the haters. I remember the WDSS contest and hardly any of the good levels were rated four stars. Fastbros level was awesome but was rated low because of competitors, but now it is rated four where it should be, so the low rating, it's okay....... for now.

The electric frozen block is done by one sensor switch in the middle of the running track that activates after Sackboy has started moving uphill. The switch takes a few times test playing to get it exactly where I want it so it will come on or go off when the block is at my sweet spot. The block is pulled up the hill by a piston that is not stiff. It is the same set up I used for the electric block in Fort Sugar III. I remember you commenting on how most authors will just throw you to the wolves in that situation by not giving you any warning and you said you liked that I gave the player time to react before the chase ensued. I remember being pleased that you were pleased on that section. I tried to make a copy of the set up and use an emitter to respawn the block in Roots, but it never came together for me, so I decided to go with the barrier to let the block re-set up and not let the player get behind it. I was going to put a checkpoint on top of the snow hills on top of the track just for the bubble chasers, but I thought that most people would see it and automatically go for the bubbles without actually looking for them, and I didn't want that.

Thanks again Poo!! I am glad you liked my new level!!

Hahaha!! There is a hidden section that is fairly easy to access if you keep you eyes open, that leads to the honey hole of point bubbles. You'll know you have found it when you see the Lurve.

Happy hunting!!

Hey Ali, thanks for the kind words. I have played your level and I loved it. I gave it five stars and a heart.

I loved that one bubble trap you set behind the prize bubble on the right side of the timed platform. It was beautiful as well. I love how you do trees. Good luck in the contest!!

Wow,, thanks so much for the awesome feedback Spark!! Cool beans!! I inspired one of the greatest lbp creators? Poo made my day earlier but you have now made my evening!! I am glad my style has inspired you even though I think my style is very basic. I can't wait to play your platformer Buddy!!

This level only used 1/2 the thermo, my largest level so far was Timber Canyon and it used 3/4. Tera Cota on the other hand only used 1/4, because it was only three materials, I think. I might max a thermo out one day, that would be cool.

Thanks again Spark!!

I hate to say it but I accidentally got the high score on my level today.

I thought I was playing my moon version but it was from the community moon and then uploaded it to the server like a moron. I have said in the past that I try not to get the high score on my levels and I feel just awful about this I almost want to republish it now.

I still think it is beatable though so some one please step up to the plate and knock me off the top!!

Hey VJ,

Congratulations for getting a nod on the Community Spotlight! I'm a huge fan of your classic, smooth, and sleek platforming and visual style, and this level was no exception. However, I wish you could've explored more outside of your usual style to give us something unpredictable, and show some versatility and growth as a creator. You've perfected this style and showed us time and time again your impeccable skills, so have some fun trying out other things. I'm confident that whatever you come up with will be amazing. Thanks for sharing another solid level, and congrats once again for the nod and for being nominated for a Sackie. Good job my friend!

Good corner editing and material selection made for a very nice looking platforming experience! I love your bubble chains, I go crazy until I get them all

Like all your levels, this has a great replay value too! I play most of your levels at least 3 times right off the bat :-p Thanks for creating and sharing as always! Your levels are great source of neat platforming ideas

Heyy Velcro,

Sorry for the wait for my feedback. Here goes:

All your levels have the same awesome feel to them. The intricate design of using all the layers has me in a good mood. You use every layer bit by bit, but there still are some times when I fall out of your level. That's okay though, because I'm always exploring when it comes to your levels. Your mechanics are well made to match your levels. The catapults here and there make it utmost excellent.

I always have to try to get a high score. The first few times I played your level, I kept getting shocked at the " Ice Block Express Part". Catchy name for the obstacle huh? It took me 2 tries to do it without getting shocked. Your bubbles are very well placed, like always. When I completed the level the first time, I was pondering on how you got 8,000 points. So I played the level 3 more times to see the point bubbles that I have missed.

After all that excitement, I finished the level with a satisfying score of 6,000+. Although, I'll play it a few more times to reach yours and probably overcome it. But, Xenon and Memorex might beat me to it.

I loved the level, like I love all your others.

Wow, I was insanely late getting feedback for this level, but late feedback is better than no feedback.

This level was extremely fun. Like SeekingTruth86, I go crazy until I get all the bubbles also. They are always well-placed and some are hard to find, which is one of the many reasons your levels are fun. I actually kind of suck at LBP, so I spent about 30 full minutes on your level until I got all the bubbles.

Anyhow, as usual, the length was just perfect! Something that isn't to short, yet is short enough that I'll pick it back up and play it again. The difficulty was also perfect. Tough at some spots, but pretty much just casual. Perfect for your type of level. The unique art style combined with overall gameplay was just spectacular!!!

I really loved this level, and I really look forward to all your future levels. Thanks!

Thanks TheNerd, I love the Ice Block Express name!!

There is a hidden section that has a Lurve sticker which holds the mother load of bubbles, have you found it yet? The part near the beginning where you cross the ravine and the platforms appear in front of you, you should have an 8x combo going at the end if you keep the chain going. I really hope you can get the high score on this because I hate being on top of my own scoreboard.

Thanks again for your awesome feedback!!

P.S. Sorry for the short review, I'm really limited on time right now ...

Thanks so much for playing my levels Buddy, and I am so glad that you enjoy my levels.

Good luck in the contest my friend!!

Hey VelcroJonze. This was some great platforming. The last part was pretty hard, but also great. I hope you win the constest.

Thanks for playing my new level ghik16!! I appreciate your vote of confidence in the contest. The competition in tough, but we are getting some awesome community levels in the proccess.

Thanks again!!

This is a really great level, the platforming was solid, and fun. I liked your choice of materials, and this level felt a lot better than the Alpines in story-mode. The level had a classic VelcroJonze feel to it, so that was also a plus. The points were placed in nice areas, and the length of the level was just right. I, of course, didn't get the high-score because I forgot to use my mad skillz. Overall, this was a really nice, fun level, that anyone can enjoy. Keep up the good work.

I rated it :star::star::star::star::star: and gave it a <3.

Hey Frogboy!!

Thanks for great feedback. When someone says my level has a classic VelcroJonze feel to it, it just makes me smile. Thanks for saying that it is a fun level anyone can enjoy. I really try to make my levels finishable by the average player. My niece play tests all my levels so I usually try to make the level more fun than difficult. It is ironic, the one level she helped me make (Chickadee) is my hardest.

Thanks so much for the heart, and for playing my levels .

No problem man, he also ripped off Alimuffin's environmental tutorial. I can't believe people do that.

Got you too? Sorry to hear that Bro, my original level for the LBUP got corrupt and I had to start from scratch. I will go to my grave thinking the original was a better level.

Please don't stop creating, you are one of my favorite creators.

This will be a short feedback, cause I want to return to your Level and search for
those spots I missed out
You're realley good with game mechanics all those winches and bolts work as they should.
The look of your level is awesome, I like this clean style!
I'm not able to do something like that by myself I'm always getting lost in details, no matter how hard I try to avoid it:blush:

I had a nice time with your Level,
and now I'm getting back
to leave 5 Stars and a Heart (:

My only problem was that being the curious explorer that I am, I fell through a few holes leading me back to the beginning of the level so i had to blow myself up :|2010-05-23 15:37:00
