Cool Levels

Archive: 20 posts

Hidy Ho Sackfolks! I finally managed to access the Community Moon after the issues with 2.05 not allowing people to, and the first thing that I noticed was that when I enter the Search Options, there is a "Cool Levels" option now!

I looked around the cool levels checking out the ratings and hearts on all of the levels on Page 1 and 2, and from what I saw, there are a lot of levels at 4 stars, but a surprising number at 3 stars as well (and even a few at 2!). Something else is that none of the levels had more than 50 plays, and if you flip to page 2 or page 3, it seems to just be the same levels that were on page 1.

So what are these Cool Levels? Are they levels that came out in the last week? Or perhaps just a random assortment of levels that have been out for a while? Either way, it is exciting to see a new search option, and hopefully this page will be dynamic and changing on a daily basis for those who want a variety of random levels thrown their way

It will be intersting to see how this differs from 'Featured Levels'. When I heard about 'Cool Levels' on the PS3 I assumed that 'Featured Levels' was basically the same thing.2010-04-27 13:37:00

Thanks for the notification, Poo! I didn't notice it until you mentioned it! Maybe it's giving unknown but skilled creators a chance at getting well-known? Either way, the more search options, the better! 2010-04-27 13:37:00

Well, let me tell you the difference between Featured Levels (on PSP) and Cool Levels (on PS3):

Featured Levels on PSP is just a series of levels the Cambridge chooses to be featured. It is 100% up to Cambridge which levels are put here, and they will never change unless Cambridge puts a new set up.

Cool Levels on PS3 (and maybe now PSP) is a series of levels that are constantly changing. Levels can only be on Cool Levels for exactly ONE week after they are published. If you publish on a Monday at 1PM, then when the following Monday rolls around, once 1PM comes your level will be removed from cool pages and it can never return to cool pages unless you delete it and republish it. Even if your level never makes it onto Cool Pages, it still cannot get on there after the level has been published for 1 week. The whole 1 week thing has no basis on how long it has been on Cool Pages, but rather on how long the level has been published.

Cool Pages on PS3 basically drive what levels get noticed. Sure, the Highest Rated levels get a constant trickle of plays (there are maybe 5 or 10 people playing the Highest Rated levels at one time), but the Cool Levels one Page 1 can have 150 people in them at once! These levels usually pick up around 30,000 to 80,000 plays in their one week on Cool Levels if they can reach page 1 early enough in their week on Cool Levels.

Like on Highest Rated, a level needs to sort of climb Cool Pages based off of how it is rated, played, and maybe off of how many hearts it gets (not sure about the hearts though). There is some calculation that LBP PS3 does based off of plays, rating, and hearts (*maybe) that decides how high up the Cool Pages a level is, but then it will rise over time and reach level one if it is well accepted (either highly rater, or because it gets a boat load of plays).

The issue with PS3 is that there is cheat that you can do to rise up Cool Pages, even if your level sucks. All you need to do is just sit there and republish over and over and over and over for a long time, and your level can eventually just stick on Page 1 of Cool Levels. Because of this, there are a lot of terrible levels on Cool Levels, and Cool Levels (or Cool Pages) has basically become synonymous with "Suck", which is really to bad since there is so much potential there.

But on PSP we are in a different boat. If Cool Levels works the same way, we have no fear of this republish issue, because if we republish, it will delete all of the plays and hearts, and end up penalizing the creator instead of rewarding them!

So, there you have a very brief explanation of a very mysterious and controversial feature on LBP PS3. It will be interesting to see what comes of it on PSP.

One major difference between PSP and PS3 is that on PSP, you have the option of going to Your Published Levels or Newly Published Levels. Otherwise you have to enter a new search and press SQUARE to find things like Highest Rated, Cool Levels, or Featured Levels. On PS3 you have the option to go straight to Cool Levels, or to the community levels like your levels, highest rated and such. So on PSP, newest levels are given the priority, while on PS3 Cool levels are given the priority, so perhaps Cool Level won't have as big of an impact anyway since you can't go straight to them.

Ok... I'm done

Thanks AFP. I didn't know how the Featured Level worked, so I do now. I think that Cool Levels will help this community a lot. The average LBP PSP user finds it hard to find different levels I think. Newest levels are not the best oppurtunity, because there's a very few good levels, even though they're all different. Now the people who don't use any kind of LBP network(Central - Gamespot - Land) would have an easier way to find more unknown creators.2010-04-27 15:27:00

It seems they've updated them today.

Thanks for the explanation poo.

Excellent explanation AFP, I had no idea what the PS3 community system was like, so your post helped me get a feel for this Cool Levels search function a great deal.

So, it's almost like a little ranking system for new levels, less than one week old? I'm looking forward to seeing it in action!

Yes, I guess it's a lot like a Highest Rated section for levels that are less than 1 week old, though for Cool Levels they take plays into account a lot more than Highest Rated does (I think).

I'm not sure about Cool Pages on PSP though. I took a gander at it this morning, and it seems that all of the levels on there still have less than 50 plays! So maybe it works a lot different on PSP. Maybe it's sort of a list of new levels that are getting some attention or something. If it was like Cool Levels on PS3, I would assume that there would be levels that had a lot more plays. Then again, it may be way too early to tell. All of the levels listed may have been published yesterday, and it is hard to pick up more than 50 plays in less than 1 day.

Hm, it may still be as you said, but perhaps only levels published after the update are eligible to appear on the Cool Levels page. That would explain the lack of plays, at least.

Yeah, this is sort of what I am thinking as well. It will probably take us a whole week or two to have a good guess at how Cool Pages work. Fortunately we have a new level by VelcroJonze and a new level by crazy555, so we can keep our eyes on those and see if they show up on cool pages, and if they do show up, we can see if they disappear after a week is up or what happens

This is an excellent idea. Let's keep a close eye on these levels for research sake.

Alrighty, I've been checking on Cool Level whenever I have the chance, so I figured that I would make an update:

It would appear that Cool Levels works NOTHING like it does on PS3. Though it does seem that the levels may be changing, a lot of the ones on there are the same ones that were on there from the moment that Cool Levels were added a few days ago.

Not just that, but I've also noticed a 1 star level on there? This sort of tosses the whole theory of this being like the PS3's Cool Levels into the garbage.

My original thoughts were that it would work sort of like a Highest Rated for levels in their first week, except that their standings would be based on PLAYS and RATINGS (and maybe HEARTS), instead of just RATINGS like Highest Rated is.

However, seeing as VelcroJonze newest level is nowhere to be seen on Highest Rated, and it is both less than one week old, has a 4 star rating, and it has 40 or 50 plays I think (so it is rated higher than a lot of the levels on Cool Pages, the level is still in it's first week, and it has around the same number of plays as the other levels on Cool Levels), I can confidently say that Cool Levels currently works nothing like the PS3 version does (unless VJ has been holding out on us and his level has really been published for over a week).

So, what the heck are Cool Levels?

Seeing the odd way that it is working now, I would almost assume that there is something wrong with the way it is set up. I mean, why in the world would you chose a page full of random levels with around 50 plays or less which have a wide assortment of ratings and then leave them there for days? And on top of that, why have multiple pages of levels, but then have the same set of levels on every page? It all just doesn't make much sense. And why didn't Cambridge mention that they were adding a completely new search option to the PSP with the update? That seems pretty darn significant to me, and yet there was nothing to be found about it anywhere!

I'll keep my eye on Cool Levels still, but my hopes are certainly not high for it at the moment.

Indeed, they should've included it in their update release notes.

Yeah, cool levels kind of sucks right now. It seems like it's just the same old stuff from new releases.

I don't think you get it. Haiti and dear sony levels are levels which keeps on being republished by new people. This makes them new levels in the system. There's no way that the system can figure out about which levels are copies from old levels.
