We've Been Hit!

Archive: 14 posts

Okay, on Saturday, at exactly 12:00 A.M., my city was hit by a huge storm. This was like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 all over again! First, it was EMP, Chopper Gunner, AC130, and finally a Tactical Nuke. It was insane!

First off, some of you might have heard of a deadly tornado hitting the south. Well this is what I'm talking about. Near 11:57 P.M. on Friday, my lights started to flicker. Two minutes later, they went out (hence EMP). Then, on Saturday 12:00 A.M., we got heavy rain (Chopper Gunner). Next, hail (AC130) the size of quarters, at which this moment my house was freakishly being hit hard due to the wind. Finally, just after a minute past 12:00 A.M., I got a dose of the tornado. I heard things fall, rip, and my house shook so badly I felt sick in the stomach (which is why the tornado is considered a Tactical Nuke to me). All of this in the same time, and in 3 minutes! One second I'm on Modern Wafare 2 (this is where I got the whole EMP, Chopper Gunner, etc. thing from), and the next I'm at my hall way, hoping I'm not going to be a tornado victim. It was hectic!

While the tornado passed around 12:27 A.M., I was bored (ya I know, tornado hit me and I'm bored!?), so I tried going online. Sadly, the internet, along with the whole city, was out. It was still quite windy, and heavy rain was still falling, but either way, people were going back and forth in te hopes of protecting their cars. Honestly, I was a bit unsuprised to see this. In fact, a bit entertained really. We looked like ants, especially since the street lights, including all the lights here, were out, so we were a bit confused and paranoid of driving to fast. So ya, got the truck safe in the nearest bank's parking lot, and then got a ride back home, leaving the truck with other vehicles behind.

Now morning. Basically it wasn't that bad. Shingles were ripped off my roof, but nothing too serious. From my house, the most badly destroyed thing I got was a tree branch fell near my dog's house. I guess he was lucky (of course, when I first caught a glimpse of it, I thought he was dead). Thank God for that.

Now for the city, we got tress knocked down here and there. Roads blocked due to a tree and/or power lines laying on the roads. Bent poles from businesses. Oh, and some trees crashed down on fences (mainy the owner's neighbors of course). I'm talking about apple trees, grape fruit trees, even palm trees the size of two story houses being knocked down. It was kind of bad, and driving around the streets was kind of hard. We swerved so much, we looked drunk. But ya, it was kind of natural here.

You see, we had weird things here. From freezing summers (literally), to hot winters, to floods during a drought, and for some reason a tornado forming over a our market and then just ending there (I guess nature hates food for low prices). Even though this happens, we just go with the flow. Sure, a few worries here and there, but that's it. Students go to school and parents go to work. I actually compete with my friends in some "Who Got Hit Worse" competition (I one the one with a hail storm). So in the morning I told you I was driving around town, I saw many other people doing the same. They all do this all the time, mainly for the "Ooh, look at that!" feeling. It was like they were touring a new place, and everybody was on a scavenger hunt; to find the most destroyed property. Obviously, my curiosity go me into the hunt as well, so I took a few pics of my own. So now we have the results!

Topping at number three is:

Finally, drum roll please. I seen cars hit houses, and trees hit houses, but never have I seen this. This is literally a “WTF?” moment. Either they don’t know how to install sheds, or this is really the number one most destroyed thing I found in this city:

When I saw this, I was like “Oh my God!”. I thought someone was hurt, yet I laughed a bit. I felt ashamed for this, but I can't help the fact that a shed flew through the air and hit a house. It was like a FAIL picture! Not to mention that when I saw it, I was buying a taco from the owner (the shed was part of a small taco shop/grocery store). He asked me, "Notice anything different?" I said no. The he points me to the house, and two senonds later I'm laughing my butt off. Thankfully though, the family was out, so no one was near the house when it was hit. Although, some people had different reactions. Some smiled, maybe because their scavenger hunt was over, maybe they hated the people, or maybe because they’re glad it wasn’t them. Some were sad, although I can guess why. And many just went on without giving off a sign of emotion, but I can understand this. It’s just S.S.D.D. (Same **t Different Day) to us.

Overall, I find it weird that we were hit, and I’m glad no one is dead or injured. Some places were not so lucky, which is sad since it could’ve have been us (although, the city’s in a bowl like area, so tornadoes won’t do too much to us… now floods are our biggest problem!). It’s just another day here in my city.

So, who was your day?

Wow! Glad you're ok and didn't have much damage done. It's funny how people react differently to stressful situations like this. Tornadoes are the scariest things. I drove through one once:

Jww was on the cell phone with me (headset) at the time. He had the radar up on his computer and was trying to get me through the storm. It was pitch black and the rain and wind were horrible. 10 or 15 minutes later I made it out but I got a wonderful glimpse of the the vertical storm wall. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen, especially since it was bright daylight when I drove out of it. The following Monday a co-worker of mine told me about a friend of his who was driving through the storm on the same stretch of highway. The tornado actually picked up his truck and threw him off the highway.

I've had a few other close calls with tornadoes but this one was the most recent.

Yikes (to both the OP and Countess's)!

The worst thing that happened here was a horrible ice storm. Some people's power was out for over a week, and everything was covered in ice for about 2 days. You could literally stand on the ice and it wouldnt even budge. Doesnt matter how much you weigh. But anyways, everywhere trees were knocked down, people were freezing, and it just wasnt fun. If I remember correctly, my internet was out for well over a week, and thats nothing to compared to some people!

Dang, that souns bad!
Something like that happened where i lived many years back, when a tornado passed really close to where i lived. Thankfully it didn't hit us directly, but it was still pretty bad, the tornado alarms going on, the super storm caused by the tornado...
So yeah i kinda know what you went through.

Well, thankfully it sounds like you guys over there were ok.

WOW, i'm so glad you are all okay!! I've never been through a tornado... but hurricanes... the first house I lived in was completely destroyed in hurricane andrew! I was actually in another state when it hit (like, on a trip- sooo lucky on that one), plus I was young enough that I don't remember much... since then, there have been other hurricanes, but nothing like that one... lol, come down to south florida- you'll have lots of good storm stories to tell! 2010-04-26 16:00:00

I'm scared to death of tornadoes. We don't have many around here. I live in a valley. I work on top of a mountain, though, and there was a really bad tornado that ripped through here two or three years ago. A tree came down and crushed one of our employees cars when she was in it (she was fine, it came about an inch from killing her, though!) By some sort of luck, I had taken a vacation day that day. Otherwise I would have been driving right through it. It was weird, because it's very unusual for a tornado to happen in this area, let alone on top of a mountain! Some trees I drove past a few days later were completely twisted, and giant trees were uprooted. It was neat and scary at the same time!2010-04-26 16:05:00

Ireland never has any tornadoes or anything. I'm not complaining, I'm scared when the wind blows for god's sake! I just found it quite weird since we have really bad weather. Hmm...2010-04-26 21:55:00
