inFamous level..

Archive: 17 posts

For a competition, I've been tasked with creating a level which depicts myself unlocking a trophy. I've chosen to recreate the level from inFamous, in which the player decides whether to feed the hungry (Good Eats) or keep the food for himself (Evil Eats).

I'm interested in hearing your ideas for this level, specifically about creating the mood. Recommended lighting, etc.

The first thing I would like feedback on is creating a nuke. As you may know, inFamous starts with a huge explosions - which lets off a blinding white light - how do you recommend recreating this?

Also, Any tips on creating fire? I'm not talking about the fire-hazard, that looks pretty bland. I'm talking actual flames. Any ideas?

I'm planning to have the cars on fire (See above), and I want some of them to explode when triggered by a sensor.. what's the best way to do this, and how can I create the best looking explosion?

Lastly, I want sparks spewing from electrical objects. My idea was to have an emitter which emitted small blue and white LED lights - is this a good idea, or is there an easier/better way?

I welcome any other thoughts on the project, and look forward to seeing other suggestions for the level (Other than the 4 I've asked for opinions on).

Thanks, Parker.

I think the flame on top of the candle light would work as a flame, and for the explosions I'd advise watching this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xaw91ORssc), to get some ideas.2010-04-25 16:17:00

How would I go about getting the flame from the candle (I'm a noob ) - Exploding the base? Or dissolving the base? Or something else entirely..2010-04-25 16:20:00

In the Incredibles pack, theres is a jump where you surf like Frozone, it could be an original way of getting Cole to travel on wires.
Nice idea by the way!
Can't wait to see the result.

I just took a look at a video with what you're talking about - that's fantastic! Thanks for that, I'll take a look at it!2010-04-25 16:57:00

*Sorry for double posting*

In the Incredibles pack, does the jump come included in a prize bubble? Or is it something which is only featured in the level?

It's only featured, but it isn't too hard to create. 2010-04-25 23:57:00

1. I'd say dark, gloomy, with a tinge of red. Like Post Apocalyptic (see flamingemu's video)

2. I'd say use a flash of an LED and loads of sound effects, real explosions are tricky to co-ordinate.

3. An actual explosion shoud be used here, experiment to get the car to flip in cool ways. Again, LEDs and Sounds will help.

4. Your method sounds spot on, I've never seen anything else used.

5. I strongly recommend recreating some of Cole's powers. Electric grenades wouldn't be that hard, just an emitter and some SFX.

Best of luck!

You'd have to make a premade object like the floating thing in the Incredible's Pack. Then have it emitted. 2010-04-26 22:47:00

For the part at Ground Zero, I've created an awesome multi-storey car-park (Like at the start of inFamous) with an amazing mood. Dark, gloomy, fire.. Flashing LED's on the elevators.. parts of the building fallen down, etc.
When he gets out of the car park, he gets hit by lightening (And doesn't die). It then teleports you to the hospital (2 weeks later), when the city has gone crazy. I'm having extreme difficulty creating the hospital. I'm not happy with it, no matter what I do - any suggestions?

Yeah, I've went for that too. I've just made it so the cars are all busted up and on fire. I'll try be more creative with the explosions later..

I'm having trouble emitting the LED's, they're far too big! I guess I'll have to create my own object..

That sounds like a fantastic idea! I'll try add in Cole's powers some how. Thanks for your tips.

I don't understand? I think I'll just link the buildings with some chain (Or whatever it's called..), with a small peice of invisible dark matter laid across the top, so he can walk along it.

The thing to remember is that hospitals are bland. They are plain, boring buildings, overly clean, blank, etc. My advice would be to check out movie scenes in hospitals for inspiration, but at the end of the day the design won't be anything special.

Well, you could shrink the led's down to a smaller size and then emmit them, if they aren't emmiting right, see if they are colliding with something in the thin layer, if they are, they won't emit until there is empty space for them

I think you mean rope, I would recommend having invisible glass floating in the air with invisible dark matter hanging it up. When the player 'railslides" on the telephone wires, have some electrical particle effects like emmited small led's to give the effect of an electrical spark. Looking forward to this level, sounds great dude!
