Jumping, Switching Layers & Directional Buttons

Archive: 25 posts

Hey. I've got access to the beta know and I've tried a few of the levels and I've noticed a few things that cause me a little (not a lot) concern.

One thing I noticed from videos and especially now when I play the game is that the jumping mechanics are very... imprecise. Now this is a platformer, where running and jumping are the two most basic and important parts of the gameplay.

But to me the jumping just doesn't feel right. I know it a sack boy and they maybe tried to make the jumping kind of floppy to fit with the character and as an homage to Rag Doll Jung Fu. But to me it seems to impede the gameplay. Perhaps it's just something I have to get used to but when I compare it to any other platformer that I've played, the jumping just isn't as good.

Another thing I noticed is that switching layers is also very imprecise. Many times I'll switch layers without wanting or meaning to.

And the last thing is that I think you should be able to move Sackboy using the directional buttons. There's no reason why not IMO, and I just prefer playing 2D platformers using the directional buttons. It ironically gives me a greater feeling of precision when controlling the character. And it would also simplify the problem of switching layers, I think I'd prefer it if switching layers was completely in the players control where you must press up to go into the screen and down to go towards the foreground.

What do you guys think?

I agree with you on the layers. It's annoying when it changes by itself but it's necessary sometimes when there is only one layer.2008-10-04 08:54:00

Completely disagree

I felt like you did when I first started, but now it's become second nature.

That is a big relief. I was worried about that too because I heard a lot of people concerned about the layers

The odd thing is, even without playing this game, but other classics with the similar type of layering, it already feels fine. (I think I've been watching too many videos...)2008-10-04 16:58:00

I think the control system will be very intuitive. Short learning curve, and as for the jumping, you hold it down for a big jump and tap for a little one. But I am slightly worried about the layers though, I must admit.2008-10-04 20:46:00

Wow some people are needy I understand you are just pointing it out but still nothing is perfect. Just wait until it comes out and maybe patches can fix things. We will see.

Haven't played it but I have a question for you " How did you get used to other platforming games? " Just give it a month or maybe even a week if your really fast at learning, I'm pretty sure you will get used to the jumping.

As for the layer switching, I can see how it can be a problem but then again, a lot of videos I have seen, shows how you kind of need the auto-switch ( For example, there was this one video, were u get on some sort of trampoline like thing, it shoots you up so fast, and while your coming down you have to move to the backround layer. If that auto-switch wasn't there I'm pretty everyone would miss it.

I'm completely used to switching layers and jumping by now. Took a little bit but it's no problem after that.2008-10-06 05:31:00

i totally agree, and even though i have only played for only a total of somewhere around 5-6 hours it does become second nature but some have that happens sooner than others and some latter than others

The only thing about the plane switching that I can complain about is that you can't go down into the background (e.g. I'm on a rock and can only jump off to the left, right, or foreground).

Can't jump? Make a machine to do it for you.

Well, the layer switching can get annoying sometimes. Other times, it feels completely natural. To be honest, I think Media Molecule should just add an option to switch between layers automatically or manually, that way everyone's happy.2008-10-06 18:51:00

switching layers wasnt even a problem for me after about an hour with the game. the only problem i see is when your in the front layer and you wanna drop down below it it wont let you.2008-10-06 20:29:00

It's not really that I have a problem switching layers really I am kinda of used to it but I can rarely switch layers quickly and with precision (unless it's automatic). Which isn't really necessary TBH but still I find it annoying.

As for the jumping, I think it is as much a problem with the level design of some of the beta levels and the MM made level. I don't think you should have to jump the highest you can jump from rest and still not make it over the lip of a platform. In almost every platformer I've ever played, the player clears the lip of the next platform by a good margin, it generally isn't difficult to make it over the lip. But in LBP a number of times (and it isn't only me, I've seen it in vids of other players too) I'd jump not make it over, try again maybe fail and then take a running jump (when on a small platform sometimes) and then make it over. To me this is not good level design. And I don't think I'm being picky or "needy" about it either. It's a beta but I assume of the running and jumping are finalised.

As for the directional buttons, that's a petty thing and while I was writing it for some reason I forgot you use them to change Sackboy's expression. Which I wouldn't sacrifice for anything. So I retract what I said about that.

disagree.

Once you get a hang of the controls and movement it becomes super easy to predict and control. The issues I'm having is with levels with spikes or other obstacles placed too close together. Then it becomes hard to jump precisely.

That's because there's no layer there to land on. Why would they even have that? So you could die?

Well then, it was poorly worded, and had he read two posts before his, he would have seen that I had already mentioned that.

I've seen employees of Mm in the demonstration videos having difficulty with the jumping controls, even on short jumps, so I do worry about my own skills!

But, of course, we can make the jumping as easy as we like in our own levels, because we can choose how close the platforms are to one another. Let's just hope for great level design from Mm - and from the world!

At first play through, EVERYTHING about LBP is about fiddly or strange. The beauty is that the more you explore and experiment, the easier the controls become and the greater your skills. The create mode is pretty intense at the beginning, with an overabundance of distractions! All the switches, levers, pulleys and functions take some serious time to master but, good golly, it's fun getting there!!!2008-10-07 10:52:00

Seems Mark Healey agrees with me at least about the switching layers or "Z-axis movement".
