http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/46466/2035505160104171976S425x425Q85.jpgThe Dream Catcher is about a sackling's first day on the job watching the dream machine - things go wrong and he gets sucked into the Dream World and must find a way out. But beings in the Dream World have different plans. Features a very unique style and visuals that are not in any other levels I've seen.
Hello all,

My latest level was recently published and is on the Cool pages (5 now, may have slipped back to page 6). I worked very hard on created a very unique visual experience for the Dream World. Hope you guys take a chance and play it, since it only has a few more days on the Cool Pages.

I posted F4F because I know there are other creators just like me who just want others to experience their level that they worked so long to create. I have no problem checking out other Creator's levels. If you play my level - leave a comment and put "LBPC" next to it and I'll try one of your levels out.

Thanks everyone!

Great level. The visuals were unique, and the overall level was very abstract (and if you couldn't tell I love abstract *ahem*). The platforming was simple and kind of hard, but the "effed upness" of the level kept it from being frustrating. I think the hints you gave were kind of useless, people aren't that stupid. xD I'd suggest taking off the hints. The story was also interesting, but you didn't give enough information on the story. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a story level or not though. :o A lot of times the visuals were awe-inspiring and made me wonder how you did it. Some, however, (specificly the end) were bland and I could see some dark matter a few times. Overall though, I liked it. The abstractness won me over.

:star::star::star::star: and a heart. Great job.

Can you leave feedback on Cemetery Drive by AbstractSam (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25672-Cemetery-Drive)? Thanks.

Thank you very much for trying the level and your feedback.

As for the ending - my level overheated and glitched on me. Took me weeks to get a workable ending. Anything I added would not work (no new mouths, further explaining the story, etc) - the ending was COMPLETELY watered down. I planned on ending it with a bang - there were supposed to be earthquakes, and the world breaking apart - but no matter what, my level got FUBAR'd from the glitch and tons had to be deleted. Very sad for me.

I ended it as best I could and yes, it is a story that I hope to clarify in the next installment - but no new mouths could be added. I have obviously learned my lesson about backups. I gave the hints because for some reason - people I beta tested with got confused. So, based on the beta testing, I added hints/arrows.

Again, thanks for taking the time to play and posting your feedback.

(I'll play your level tonight).

Hey Cymbol

I played the level last night while flicking thru the Cool Pages, kudos on the amount of madness, some really bizarre and cool effects in there!

I think I remember your name - maybe you took a pic, or left a comment - or maybe I just saw your name on the scoreboard or something.

Anyway, thanks for playing and the comments. So glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Cool - I'll try WaffleWorld 2 - read that thread and it looks like a fun level. Hope to hear back what you thought about the Dream Catcher.

Darn thing won't seem to move up to page four on the Cool Pages.

Very cool level. It was very surreal and your effects were really good. It really was like a dream world. One thing I have trouble with is some of your cameras. Most people who play with me know I get a little motion sick at times. I may be more sensitive than others, but I did find myself a bit dizzy at the beginning of the level.

Hearted your level and I hope you continue this story. Nice job.

Greetings Symbol;

Below is my review of your level. Please take these comments as constructive suggestions only:

General comments::

-- I think that your level is one of the most visually stunning and impressive I have yet played: I gave you a Heart based upon the visual and special effects alone. Well done! I also loved the "epic journey" feel to it.

-- Like many movies in which a huge amount of effort and budget has gone into special effects, the visuals weren't *balanced* by story -- the plot was a bit lacking, particularly the "apologetic" ending ("I ran out of thermo...sorry"). On the up-side, I believe that the story and dialogue could be greatly improved and reworked without making any physical changes to the level at all, just by changing the contents of the speech bubbles.

Specific comments:

-- The "first day on the job" section of the level shifted from camera-zone to camera-zone too frequently and too abruptly...it "stuttered" from bit to bit, rather than flowing smoothly, and was somewhat uncomfortable to watch.

-- The dialogue from the first few characters became quickly monotonous: the "so, you're the new Dream Catcher, eh? I hope you do better than the last one..." bit. Rather than repeating the same thing multiple times, you might try having each new character build upon what the last one said....leading up to the danger of the job about to be embarked upon (the "fine print" they didn't tell you about when you hired on).

-- The entry into the Dream World was well done, and felt very much like the introduction scene to the old Rod Serling's The Twilight Zone, especially with the cut to black-and-white visuals.

-- I generally don't like long sections where your character completely disappears, but you are still expected to move around and navigate. There were a few places in the level where the player was so immersed in visual effects, that he/she became non-vislble but had to move about, nonetheless.

-- Since the level was not able to include the "Dream Tree", I would cut it out of story completely: as it stands now, the player is told that they will be going on a specific quest for a fruit...only to be told later on that "due to technical difficulties, it ain't gonna happen." The journey-through-hell portion at the end is a nice climax to the level, really, so let it stand as the end (for this installment). Don't apologize at all (you've done a marvelous job!). Just change the story to match what the player will *actually do*, as opposed to what you originally wanted them to do. You've set up an epic battle between good and evil, with Sackboy caught in the middle as a pawn -- run with that ball with no apologies!

-- The "many decorations stuck on a rotating gadget" effect did start to feel a bit overdone, by the end. You could actually cut a few of these out (such as the little one at the very beginning), and make the remaining ones more special.

-- The "choose Yes (bubbles!) or No (squish!) bit" was funny, but felt out of place and unnecessary. I'm here. I'm halfway through your level: of course I'm going to continue on! If not, I'd 'Return to Pod' now! You could get rid of that part, get a little Thermo back, and keep the level-journey's flow smooth.

-- The last jump at the end was evil, pure EVIL. My wife was busting up on the couch watching me try to do it, and watching my points drop and drop and I died and died...I finally got it.

Again, an extremely impressive job! Balance the special effects with story and you have an epic tale here!

Cymbol has been a PSN friend of mine for some time now, and I promised him I'd record his level and upload a video. For his level, I actually created a new series for my channel called the LittleBigShowcase, and I feel that this level deserves some recognition. If you enjoyed the video, please provide some feedback and play the level! It's well worth a play, and I hope that my new series achieves that effect upon people. So, please enjoy and watch the video!

I just got finished playing it, and this level is really amazing visually. The effects you put in here are awesome, and while some of the basic materials and things are sloppy at some parts, it's easily overshadowed by how amazing some of the effects are. You also have some decent platforming in here and a pretty interesting story. I did think some of the characters could have been better, but at the same time, their uncanniness kinda adds to the surreality of it all. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to make the long jump easier. Maybe add a swingy thing in between to grab onto or something, or make the platforms synchronized in a way that will always provide optimum momentum. The part after you talk to the Dream Queen or whatever, the grassy area and desert seem really empty, but I wasn't sure if you did that intentionally, as it's clearly supposed to be a montage of sorts. Anyway, this was a really fun level. I gave it 5 stars and a heart. I can't wait until the sequel. 2010-04-24 18:40:00

Thank you very much for taking the time to play the level. As I mentioned earlier - my level glitched at the end. I was completely devastated. I was done and adding some final touches and it overheated and was never the same. Basically, things I made in Create Mode were not there or would not work properly in Play Mode. The earthquakes wouldn't work, new dialouge wouldn't show. . . I was COMPLETELY bummed out.

You actually found the Dreaming Tree at the end - but in Play Mode it was standing sideways in some weird glitch - showed upright in create.

I completely agree with all you guys about the dialouge needing tweaking - but I was afraid to edit it and have it completely be gone.

I really like the constructive critisism and agree with many of the issues you brought up - in most cases, I was simply stuck not being able to make the final tweaks.

Haha, yes, yes it is evil. But fun when you make it (in my opinion).

Thanks again for the lengthy review/feedback. I appreciate it.

Sorry but I didn't like this at all. I played it because of the title, not realising it was a level full of really weird glitches. I just found it very nauseating and it made things difficult simply because of the strange effects. I can't remember which part I got to but I gave up eventually.

The worst thing though was that it messed up my pod. When I returned to the pod it was all glitchy with weird lines and lights flashing around all over the place. I tried resetting my pod several times but it wouldn't go away so I ended up switching the system off and I haven't put it back on since. I really hope this level hasn't screwed up my profile.

I think it would be a good idea to let people know the level has some crazy glitches in before they play it. If I'd known that I wouldn't have played it to start with.

That's fine that you did not appreciate the design. The only glitch used is the 3D glitch and invisible ground. Sheesh! (I really don't understand your statement of "full of glitches"). Heck, I don't even use teleporting. All checkpoint switches were done manually.

Sorry, but my level did not mess up your POD. I've had many friends beta test and over 700 plays with no complaints. LBP glitches all the time - if there is a glitch in your POD, it has to do with the game itself - not a level. I had the same issue happen many months ago. Simply restart the game or your PS3. (Kind of like error 403 - just restart). The sky isn't falling.

I think it would be a good idea to let people know the level has some crazy glitches in before they play it. If I'd known that I wouldn't have played it to start with.

The level does not have "crazy glitches" and to say so is simply not factual. The only "glitch" employed is the 3D glitch and thin dark matter, which is used in MANY, MANY levels. Everything else used in my level is something that has been around in LBP since the beginning, only used in a different way.

There are ENTIRE levels dedicated to actual glitches. Mine uses 1 of them.

Sorry to hear your POD had some lines in it for a minute - but just restart you PS3 and you'll be fine.

Lol, there weren't any crazy glitches at all xD There were some pretty awkward effects that can make you think they were glitches, but certainly they weren't.

Ya, I think the "glitches" he is referring to are the incredible effects. I have (besides this level) not seen any of the effects that Cymbol has showcased. However, that's not to say the level is without flaw; as mentioned, there are story issues, character issues, and level overheating crap that also impacted the level. But, despite those problems, the level is entirely original and creative as the effects blew me away the first time I witnessed them, and I still am impressed by how Cymbol manages to achieve some of the feats that he does with The Dream Catcher.

@mistervista: I think the issue with your pod has happened to many people on several occasions (myself included). So, I don't want to come across as attacking you, but think critically about the glitch that happened in your pod (your dissatisfaction with a level does not justify blame for issues with LBP), and hopefully you will determine that this issue is not related to his level.
Now, it's fine to feel that a level is poor, but placing that dissatisfaction on an unrelated issue is not very logical. So, hopefully, you realize that a simply PS3 restart will suffice, and you'll be good to go and play more LBP!

Hello all, I've updated my first post with the video review from ObsoleteXeo. Please check out the link to get an idea of the level and see what his series about.

The level is still currently on the Cool Pages (has til Tuesday night, I believe) - it hasn't done as well as I had hoped in numbers of plays, but the comments have been great and my Creator Hearts have gone up be over 20. So, it's great to see that people have enjoyed it.

I loved the fact that you used the gas at its full potential, moving decos were really clever and of course it felt like a unique experience in terms of visuals.

Thank you very much. Yeah, I had a great time manipulating the Gas effects. So much of this level was beta testing different effects. You'll never know how much got thrown away. Whew!

I planned a sequel from the start - but I thought I would get much further in the story in the first one.

After my level glitched, I wasn't able to get magic mouths working right (reliably), so I wasn't able to tweak it. But I will explain (briefly), in the beginning of the next one why sackboy was sent on his quest, and why Lord Visionary sees him as such as threat. (Hint; Sackboy was drawn into the Dream World awake - one cannot die in their dreams, so basically - he is immortal. Plus, he has few more abilities that will show his powers.)

I've also got some great effects completed (from my previous beta testing), that should be quite a sight to behold - or at least fun to play around in (like the ghosting effect).

Hey Cymbol! Great Level!

I really liked the visual effects you used especially the parts involving lighting. One of the most trippy levels i've played!
There were some great uses of stickers on the characters near the beginning of the level.

The story was interesting and I could tell that you'd put some thought into it.

There were points where there pieces of dark matter showing right in plain sight. No matter how small it is, it still sticks out like a sore thumb!

Your use of the layer glitch wasn't great. The transition between glitched layers and normal layers felt a little awkward at times so I feel you need to improve on this aspect.

As for messing up the pod, this was a coincidence. This has happened to me once or twice in the past but your level had nothing to do with it.

I gave the level :star::star::star::star: and a heart!

I'd really appreciate it if you could give my level some feedback! (The link is in my sig)

That was an fantastic level you made. The breath-taking visuals are an masterpiece and it has an great use of decorations especially the spinning X parts as they gave you an dreaming tour and it's creepy to see the skeleton heads watching you. It is also a great use of an horrible gas wall as they really give you an dimensional tour. I also liked the idea of putting in different environments to this level. One minor issue in this level is that the slippery wobbling platform could have been more balanced and the rolling skeleton heads should be a little tad easier. I like to see this level get spotlighted next weekend.
Great glitches, great visuals, great gameplay, and an artistic idealist. :star::star::star::star::star:

Since this is an F4F level showcase, you should check out my levels and give me feedbacks after you played them. "The Hero Quest" level series has 10 different levels with different gameplay and visuals and "Future City Los Angeles" has a variety of gameplay and great visuals.

EDIT: Sorry, I was going to ask for clarification - but I understand (about the rolling heads).

Thank you very much for the feedback.

@ Everyone - I am getting a little behind my F4F plays (I've done all but 3 and posted F4F on each so far) - unfortunately, have had a medical issue come up with my son.

I will play your levels in turn as soon as I am able. Same with anyone else who posts in here - I will make a list and go through each level.

Thanks to all for your detailed feedback. It's been great to have other creators/players have a look and give honest feedback and encouragement.

Hi, I played your level this morning. I found it visualy awesome. Nevertheless I got stuck, so I could not finish the level. Anyway I gave you 5* as I think the level is really original. Little bit more into detail

GOOD:
- the visuals of the level are awesome. Especially the rotating things
- it's really abstract and weird. This is good in general, but can also be a bit confusing for the player

THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED:
- As I said, I got stuck. Exactly in the red zone, when you have to jump to grab something, and there is something like a tree. I could not find the way to climb the tree to reach the other side of the hole.
- Perhaps there are too many areas where you just have to go forward.
- Regarding the gameplay, I found the level rather empty. I mean, it's full visually, but not so full in challenges
- the challenges are too hard. For example in the first race (pink area) with so many electric things falling...

As I said the level is great visually, but in my opinion little bit more platforms/creatures could be added to improve the gameplay.

Could you, whenever you have time, take a look at the F4F level in my signature? Thanks

I notice a lot of people get confused here. Others have critiqued me for giving "hit you over the head" clues - but for some reason - people do get stuck or can not figure some things out. This one is simple, but understandably easy to miss. Simply jump up on the background wall and climb up till you can jump up on the tree. Easy! There were two main areas of gameplay - the spinning heads and the underground caverns. I've been trying to balance my gameplay - a lot of people have complained my levels are too hard, so I'm trying not to chase players away this time.

Just FYI, incase you decide to complete it one day. Thank you for playing and your feedback.

Look forward to playing your Tank level!!!

Thanks, very nice of you.

Btw, can does anyone know who "allcreator" is? They left a comment on my level and said they would feature my level in Episode 20 of their LBP Adventures (LBPA) series.

I've actually just started to get on LBP sites (like this one) - so forgive me if this is common knowledge - or, if this was just someone leaving a vague, but nice comment.

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Nevermind - found out who "allcreator" is. He does youtube video reviews and wanted to showcase my level. Cool deal.

Anyway, just wanted you all to know - I have gotten behind on my F4F's - I'd say I've done more than half of you on my list. However, due to a medical emergency that happened with my son, I have been out and will now be gone at least a week.

When I return, hopefully, everything will be good and I'll have some time to return the F4F's. I'll still check this website while I'm away and see if I need to add to the list for F4F's. Some of the levels look like great fun and I can't wait to give them a try. I will get them done.
Thanks for all the feedback, I have made some modifications based on the feedback - but due to my level glitching, I'm afraid to make many more changes.

Currently working on The Dream Catcher II - should be bigger and better than this one was.

Thanks everyone!

Hi, I played the level again. You was right, it was really easy . I got confused because I thought that back layer was a thin one... well, I finished the level now. On thing: at the very end, the angel says something (I think regarding the thermometer) but I had not time to read it, since I was slipping too fast. You could try to fix that also.2010-04-29 08:24:00

I had great time in this level:
Bad:
-Few parts were little laggy.
Good:
+Unique and fun: something weird that hasn't been made before.
+Characters were all very nice and not copied from story characters.
+Visuals, as well as gameplay was unique and weird.
Critic: :star::star::star::star: but I decided to not give a <3 because level wasn't my style and I actually didn't find anything inspirating from it. It was a good and unique but idea was alternative. You used materials also well.

Thanks Xeo. We've been treating our kid for back pain for a couple of years - a couple of weeks ago they found a tumor on his spine - and now we're at MD Anderson in Houston (Cancer Research Center) - he's having surgery this Tuesday to have it removed. All happened very fast.

Thank you very much for the play through and critique. I understand if the level wasn't "your style" - but I'm not sure if I understand your statement that you "didn't find anything inspiring? from it".

Btw, is there any particular level of yours you want me to provide F4F on? I won't be home for another week, but as I said, I will catch up then - and complete F4F's on all levels I did not get to before leaving, as well as any new posts such as this one that come up while I'm away.

Thanks all!

Yes, The Cellar. I didn't find anything that gives me ideas or plans for my future levels, that's what I ment with "didn't find anything inspirating from it".

Ah, ok - I see. I've never heard of that as being a reason to give or not to give a heart. But I understand.

Thanks again for playing the level. I'll get to yours when I get back home.

That's terrible, but I'm sure the surgery will be fine and the tumor will be removed with no harm or problems.

Also, on a sidenote and completely different subject: I actually think I'm going to complete a level for once! When you get back to playing, I hope you'll find some enjoyment by seeing me finish a project on LBP for once. haha

I say this is a really crazy and bizzare level! I love all of the decorations and lighting, it really brought this level to its full potential. The area where the wizard guy tells you if anything goes wrong to pull the switch was what made me know this was a truly special level. All of the spinning decorations were totally awesome. It amazes me that you managed to fit all of that stuff into the level. Sorry I don't have any thing to saythat you could improve, the level seemed in my opinion, perfect. Overall, this was a visually stunning level filled with a lot of trippy effects .

I rated the level :star::star::star::star::star: and <3ed it.

Wow, well, thank you very much. It's really a boost of energy to read comments like these - gives that little push to make part II.

Unfortunately, I've been away from home almost 3 weeks now - but I will be back at the end of this week and hope to catch up on all my F4F's and get back to work on "The Dream Catcher II - Shadow Realm". It will start exactly where the last one left off, with the sackperson (Dream Catcher) swimming down into the Well of Visions. . .

Again, thanks for the comments, I was a bit bummed out tonight, so it was great to log in and read this.

(Btw, is there a specific level you want me to play of yours for F4F?)

Thanks,

C'mon, haven't you read its last replies? He is busy with real-life problems. Furthermore, he has said several times that he'll do feedback as soon as he is able to do it. What else you want? A lot of people owe me feedback also, but I'm not going behind them 2010-05-18 13:24:00

I have reviewed your level and I found very interesting, weird and totally insane, you have very good development of the story, and no doubt is the strangest thing I've seen in LBP, I was very pleased traps, roads, running around is very well done, the skulls was one of the things I liked, you had a great creation and indeed you did an excellent representation of some strange dream that we have, using means to do so gloomy, dismal, and this has been great .
I have given :star::star::star::star:

You still owe me feedback on the cellar!

I'm not sure if you are kidding at this point - I've mentioned in this thread, and replied to you personally in PM's that I'm not at home. To refresh you, I had to leave suddenly when a tumor was found on my kid's spine 5 weeks ago. We were rushed down to Houston and he's undergone two spinal surgeries. We'll be heading home this Friday. After we get him situated I will make a list of all the F4F's I did not get to before I had to leave and complete reviews for each.

I've found some wonderful levels through F4F, and I'm looking forward to going through them.

I looked at your F4F link - looks like an interesting level, I saw that you noted it was your first level, certainly looks better than my first level! Haha. I'll put it on the list of levels to get to soon.

Hey man slow down! Surely I can not know when you have real-life problems and when you don't. I know you had some problems all time a week ago but you never told that you are going to be away from home so long! I'm just getting ****** because not many people that owe me feedback gives me. I also know that some people just won't! Just wanted to remind!2010-05-19 17:24:00

Well, I've responded to you 3 or 4 times now saying I would return the F4F when I get back home and explained (1 week ago on the previous page) that I am away from home and my kid is getting spinal surgery.

I understand your frustration with people not returning the F4F - but I've said several times (and to each person who posts in this thread), that I intend to catch up on my F4F's when I return.

I will give your level and honest play through when I get back.

I have a doubt. How did you managed to create the spinning things? This is, they rotate horizontally, not vertically. How did you create that effect? Perhaps you could do a tutorial 2010-05-20 08:26:00

Okay, okay I may be a little frustrated... But for a good reason. I'm dying to try to imagine something to my new levels and during that, my old levels are dying! I made a lot of changes and republish them every day almost but soon I can't handle it anymore God I've got to go. Sorry for this mess man but I'm having a psychobilly freakout with LBP!2010-05-21 13:32:00

Trust me - every creator here understands your frustrations.

I just got home today - yeah! So, I'll be going through my F4F's this weekend.

I didn't use the drill - although I did give it a try when the Incredibles pack was released - just never found an effect that I liked using the drill. It ended up looking like decorations on a drill.

I suppose I could, although most people seem to know about it - but for those who aren't familiar with it I suppose it would help.

Most of the effects used in The Dream Catcher are the "simple" ones. I beta tested and created some (imo) really fantastic ones. It was a struggle not to put them all in part 1 just to show them off - but I decided they didn't fit the story, so I felt it was best to wait until part 2. Which works out fine since you always want the sequel to be bigger and better.

I'm really proud of some of them and can't wait for them to be seen.

Thank you both very much. I appreciate it.

Btw, is there a specific level you'd like me to play (F4F)? If I don't hear back from you I will look through your creations and play one.

Thanks again,

Here's my F4F list I need to catch up on: (Please let me know if I left anyone out - I'll get to these this Sat through Mon.)

I was unsure if some people were simply posting their thoughts, or posting F4F since they do not have a F4F sig, and did not request a specific level. Either way, I will play one of their levels in return - that's just good manners.

List of F4F I will do over the weekend.

AbstractSam - Cemetery Drive (Need to re-try, since I was not able to finish).
JulesyJules - no specific level requested.
Schrader4 - no specific level requested.
Rhys125 - Power of the Planet
JustinArt -Hero Series
onturenio - The Tanks Factory
PSYNTENS - Enchanted adventure
drei - no PSN listed and no F4F listed.
Akaash1 - Fighter Jet challenge
ferrrch - Savannah Travel

Well, looks like I have a busy weekend. Thanks for the feedback and "mostly" really positive comments. <3 Look forward to checking out these levels!

CYMBOL, I'm gonna have to check next time I'm on, but how has the advertising treated you? After all the good feedback and attention, has doing this helped you out any? I'm curious because after posting my level, I'm very excited to see the feedback and the attention given. And I'm happy to help people out as well, so for me I really enjoy the F4F system.

But I was just wondering if my suggestion for this helped you out, haha. (that was a mighty list to play, though not as long as my review request list)
