Round 3 - The Next Breakthrough Video Game

The What

Inside each of us is a video game designer screaming to get his or her ideas out to the joystick masses. It's no wonder then why LBP became a blowout success: it allowed us to live our fantasies by creating our own levels and sharing them with a community of video game enthusiasts.

But it's deeper than that. The wise Taffucius once said, "LBP really is about learning how to make video games, all the way from the technical side of switches and aesthetics to advertising your level and responding to critics." Believe it or not, we copy the process game developers undergo when they produce video games from planning and creating to marketing and defending the final product.

For this challenge, we'd like for you to imagine that you are a Third Party Game Developer pitching a new video game idea or game add-on pack to us, a prominent publishing company. You must provide two things. First, you must design an object that represents your game or add-on pack. For instance, you might want to make a character for a role-playing video game, a vehicle for a racing game, or an extra set of weapons for a first-person shooter game add-on pack. Second, you must prepare a little snippet to advertise your product. This is something we would put on the back of the video game case, so make it enticing!

Here's a sample entry for reference:

http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt338/jcua28/ViolinHero.jpg

Play the correct tune as you match the notes scrolling down the screen on your very own violin peripheral! Enjoy compositions from classical music to modern-day rock, hip-hop, and country music. Features an all new final boss, Charlie Daniels: "Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Become A World Champion

Play the single-player tournament mode as Stradivarius (pictured above), Vibaldee, Yo Yo Mama, and other characters while you battle other musical prodigies for the world crown.

Create a Band

Coordinate with other peripherals like the guitar, drum, accordion, and sitar to form your own band. Up to four players locally and online!

Compose Your Own Music

New music create mode allows you to compose your own songs and share it online with friends and the rest of the community.

The Contract

You may use any material or sticker to make your representative object(s), including those from DLC.
In addition to your promotional object(s), you must also provide a short description of your video game or add-on pack in the entry post. Only complete entries will be considered for judging.
Providing images of your object and the use of photo-editing software is NOT required. The aim of the contest is to come up with a new idea of a video game or add-on pack and to advertise it nicely so that people would be tempted to buy it. Thus, additional marketing materials may contribute to a higher score although they are not necessary. (*Note: Unless photo-edited images are provided, video-game entries will be photographed and affixed on the video game case template shown in the sample entry.)
You can submit as many video game concepts as you can produce within the given time period.
Participants cannot win twice in a row, but winners of the previous round may submit entries for fun.
Judges may participate in the contest but are ineligible to claim the prize.
Participating levels must be posted on this thread by the deadline (see below). Please provide your PSN username and level title on your entry post.
If you're not sure what to name your level, call it 'LBPC Video Game Contest'. Otherwise the title is up to you!
By posting your video game concept on this thread, you agree to the fine print stated below.

The Milestone

The deadline for this contest is 14 May 2010 at 11:59 PM GMT. Late video game pitches will be not be considered for publication.

The Royalties

The contest winner will receive his or her choice of the following:

One FREE premium LBP DLC pack of the winner's choosing.* (This prize option is for NA (US and Canda) region games only. At this time we do not have the ability to send out EU or Asia region codes.)

-- OR --

One FREE month of LBPCentral donor status. No ads! Custom title! Bonus forum features! Juicy green dot next to your name! Did I mention, NO ADS?

Had enough? Well too bad, because there's more. The winner of this contest will be crowned the Game Developer of the Year and will be given the option to be a judge for the next "You Want Me to Make WHAT??" contest.

* Premium LBP PSP DLC is defined as any of the available "level" or "theme" packs currently available for download, including (but not limited to) The Gardens Level Pack, The Savannah Level Pack, The Wedding Level Pack, The Canyons Level Pack, The Sack That Time Forgot Level Pack, or the Lurve Level Pack. Any additional DLC of equivalent or lesser value that is made available before the end of the contest may also be chosen as a prize option.

The Fine Print

By participating in this contest, you agree that you understand that the judges will make their decisions objectively, fairly, and in an unbiased manner. You also agree that there is no place for whining in an excellent contest such as this one, and any belly-aching or other distasteful behavior will result in public mockery and being pelted with soggy apricots. Finally, by participating you agree that the point of this whole thing, win or lose, is simply to have fun and enjoy yourself. This is, afterall, a video game.

awesome!! im going to need to think about this deeply. Basically we just make a promotional object right? can we make several promotional objects for one video game idea? and also can we make the object inside an environment so that the environment is included as part of the promotion? and lastly, are u going to edit each entry into a vg box?2010-04-23 10:24:00

Yes, you need to construct something that will be a key part of the video game like a character, vehicle, weapons, etc. And yes, you can make several promotional objects for one video game.

can we make the object inside an environment so that the environment is included as part of the promotion?

Yes. We're probably going to take pictures of all the entries anyways, so a backdrop for the object would add to the appeal, but of course, this is not mandatory.

lastly, are u going to edit each entry into a vg box?

I didn't have this planned, but I think it will be quite easy to do. So yes, I probably will photoshop pictures to the template I used in the sample. Thanks for the idea ali! I personally think they will look cool...

Looking forward to your entry,

I really love the idea of this contest. I have so many ideas!!! Agh, which to choose?? I might make an arsenal of weapons for SACKOM (just like SOCOM, except that everyone plays as a plush toy - lots of gratuitous stuffing will go flying when you get shot), or perhaps I should put together my hodgepodge race car for my Katamari inspired racing game. I might make a world map for the real-time strategy game I thought of.... Oh, or a scene from the rebuilt Rupture Farms for Oddworld 3: Abe's Oddventure. Gah, my head asplode!

It's really just limitless. We've all thought of stuff we wished game manufacturers had made, so now's your big chance. Build it!

Ok, question for you jc that I'm sure some people may have: Do the ideas have to be for full games or can they be for LBP add-on packs? The reason I ask is because I know half the community here is just dying for a PSP Paintinator... Could someone come up with a promotion and an object for that? So, say a scale model of the "PSPaintinator" and a blurb about the awesome Call of Duty inspired level pack it will come with?

Oh hey, that's a great idea! Yes, we will allow proposals for LBP DLC packs, and heck, DLC for any video game for that matter! I'll edit the official post with this new qualification. Thanks Taff!

So far, out of all the entries, it seems that mine is the best. After all, winning over the entire panel of two judges is no easy task, especially with all of this competition

(In other, less sarcastic words, there'll probably be another entry that's a thousand times better.)

jeffcu28Yes, that's true! I know I promised to only use its power for good, but I simply couldn't resist using it to make this excellent new signature of mine.

I need your brain half until about 10am tomorrow. I have an early morning meeting, and I need to be smart for it... and your brain is the only way I can hope to achieve that.

As soon as that meeting is over I promise to return it. Well, perhaps after a few games of Scrabble as well.

No.

Just kidding. Sure you can advertise a PSP level. However, I think you should market it as a DLC Pack, sort of how MGS or the Pirates of the Caribbean Pack--and soon the Turbo! Pack--contained levels with additional stickers and objects. In this way you'd still be following the rules!

Careful there Fastbro, If you've become a Balrog, your head will be heavy enough to break a keyboard.

Since I'm not gonna get to finish my idea, I'll explain about it.

Taffey's Grammar Galaxies - Adventures in English!

The famous Taffey takes a break from parodying movies to focus on another hobby: grammar! Travel to locations around the Space Corps and Star Bores universes and answer questions about English, but watch out - if you get it wrong too often, you might end up on the wrong end of an electrified stick.

What I was making would be a demo for the new game. It was just going to be a dramatic scroll like the ones that start most of Taffey's levels, then you'd land in a Imperial hallway like in Snack. There would be a sentence floating above, and buttons on the floor with 'it's' and 'its' by each, and you had to choose the right one. If you got it wrong you'd be hit by an "electrified stick" that would slash down from off to the side. Once you hit the right answer, a hole would open to the scoreboard.

Sorry I couldn't get this done in time... maybe I'll finish in the future.

Congratulations Xero!

We were impressed with the well-thought out concept, convincing and detailed description, and fantastic marketing materials. It even generated a laugh or two. Hehe.

Thanks to Starchy and ali for participating too. We appreciate and enjoyed your entries, and we hope you join again for future rounds. You'll both receive 50 experience points whenever the system comes back. See everybody wins!

Hey! How in the heck did I miss replying to this one? It must be those amnesia pills I've been taking.

Where am I?

Oh, right. Congrats xero for a fantastic entry, all the way from the concept to the in-game objects to the marketing materials. The game case graphics are EPIC! I'm a huge fan of all things GTA, and I think you really hit the nail on the head.

Now this is an idea I can really sink my teeth into!

Ok you're right, it wasn't all that funny. Certainly not as funny as B3's incredibly SPECTACULAR idea! **BZZT!** Ouch! Oh, right, sentence fragment... Thus the electrified stick. **BZZT!** Augh! Ok ok, I'll make sure to use only complete and grammatically correct sentences from now on.

I have to say that I am really quite honored by th... **BZZT!** Ow, HEY! There was nothing wrong with that sentence. Honor? **BZZT!** Gah! Ah, right - LBP is British. Honour? There, much better. **BZZT!** eeerff.. So, I'm very honoured by the concept and I think its **BZZT!** gargh! ... it's downright hilarious. Nicely done B3! **BZZT!** ARGH! Alright, alright! B3, you have done a very nice job on assembling this well thought-out and concisely documented concept. I look forward to playing what I hope might become a real level in the near future, but I have derived much happiness from your description of the idea irregardless **BZZT!** whimper... regardless.

I never dreamed **BZZT!** such a skillful **BZZT!** idea would materialize **BZZT!**, and you can take that to the bank. **BZZT!** **BZZT!** **BZZT!**
