Anybody else get a MNR demo code?

Archive: 35 posts

Hey everyone-

I just received an e-mail from PSN with a demo code for ModNation Racers PSP. Yay! I just about fell over myself getting to my PSP to redeem the code.

Did anybody else here receive a code? Odd that they'd send it out via e-mail instead of just putting the demo on the PSN store. I subscribe to the PlayStation Blog, which might be how I got on the list. Either that or they know I'm a LBP PSP addict.

Oh, no fair! I'm gonna go cry like a baby now. Do they actually expect me to wait one more month for the game?

Hey Taffey,

Thanks for sharing this with us. I was already on the PS3 beta, so I guess I had my taste of ModNation racing pleasure.

Let me know if they still have that hamster wheel as an engine. That was my favorite.

Videos are coming (2 of each track) and a bit from my 1st try in the editor)

Differences between PS3 beta and PSP demo (too lazy too post this on MNRC)

Obviously no online and downloading tracks since its a demo and not a beta, the game comes with just 2 tracks, but you can see there will be a lot to choose from in the full version. Races are only 2 laps set to faster speed setting (kinda like the CC50,100,150 speeds of Mario Kart), 6 karts, but you can adjust the AI of them to Easy or Medium

Course are wackier, than just the wide open levels from the PS3 beta, with the deadly traps shown in the videos, crushers etc.
Powerups are random ala Mario Kart instead of collecting for better weapons, Mines are seperate weapons coming in packs of 2-3, new weapons are in like a triple missle spread shot and some old weapons are out (mainly the ultimate ones from the PS3), ,
YOU CAN FIRE WEAPONS BACKWARDS!!
Boost seems to build up much faster, I hope the full version of the PS3's boost building is as good as the PSP's
There was a move called stomp in the controls, no idea what it does yet.
Sideswipe and Shiled return, Shield's longer thank goodness
Tricks are automatic on jumps

Demo's karts and mods are premade, and there's no customziation, of course the full version will have that.

Demo's editor is VERY limited. I thought my ananlog stick was broke when i couldn't get a track to rise or fall (so that means no looping over tracks till the full version comes) but it did come with a good amount of stuff like the crusher, ramps, robot obstructions etc.

Played the demo for a while, very fun! As with most demos, I spent most of the time stumbling around and sucking while trying to figure out the controls.

I must have missed it somewhere... but is there a help or "controls" option?

I saw the controls from one of those random help screens when a race is loading. Since it goes by quickly I still haven't gotten all the controls down yet.

R= Gas
Square= Weapon
X = Hop (Double tap for super hop)
O = Shield
Triangle = Boost
Analog = Steer
Down D-Pad = Stomp, Hold and press Square to fire weapons backwars
Up D-pad = Sideswipe
Left and Right D-Pad = Steer
Select = Respawn

I'm finally getting a feel for the editor - there's some great flexibility built in there. It's not quite as deep as LBP (could anything be?) but it sure is fun.

I have no idea why I recieved one! Thanks for the heads up though Taffey, I can't wait to give it a go! (Maybe it has something to do with signing up for the free theme on the website they offered a while ago?)

EDIT: Its not working... I'll give it ago on my US account instead...

EDIT 2: Yep, its working on my US account! Time to take it out for a spin!

I got one
They didn't put this on the store as it's basically an early access thing, since Qore got early access too.

Sweet! (Maybe it has something to do with signing up for the free theme on the website they offered a while ago?)That was my first thought, but I actually used a different e-mail account for that one. I got the code for the theme on my other account and the code for this demo on my primary account.

My best guess right now is that the code went out to random people who have downloaded LBP PSP from PSN, and/or some of the DLC.

...... also I am worried that no-one will play lbp...You don't have to worry much about that.

Even if I milk the demo for all it's worth, I doubt I'll get more than a few hours tops out of it. When the full game comes out, I suspect there will be a temporary LBP dropoff but it will pick back up again. For me at least, kart racers are something I need to be in the mood for, while LBP is an anytime any day affair.

I got the code, YES! But, in a weird turn of events, I can't download it. I have 145 MB of free space in Memory Stick, and it says that it needs 135 MB to download. But then it keeps saying not enough free space. 145 - 135 = 10 leftover. 2010-04-24 21:43:00

Just keep clearing space until it lets you download the file.2010-04-24 22:38:00

Taffey, how have you enjoyed the demo? Are you able to share some of your impressions?

I don't have a PS3 so I'm really hoping that the PSP version will be excellent!

I got one, but have no interest in playing the PS3 one, let alone the inevitably inferior PSP one. So yeah, I'm giving it away. First person to send me a pm gets it, don't post here, because I don't check the PSP forums.2010-04-27 20:27:00

Well, I'm not Taffey, but I could tell you how I've enjoyed it. Anyways, the racing is much better than I expected. The framerate is really high (60FPS maybe?), and it doesn't slow down at intense parts (i.e. lots of explosions from weapons). The view has been improved from the PS3 version (in my opinion), and the drifting is awesome. The pre-made tracks are neat, too. The track editor was really cool. Although you can only use around 10% of items in the demo, it was still pretty awesome. There are a LOT of items (i.e. 8 different kinds of trees, 12 different kinds of houses, at least 10 different kinds of ramps). It's obvious that there will certainly be a lot of unique tracks when the game comes out. The only down about the track editor is that you can't really make a really long track. The max length gets filled up REALLY quickly. You can, however, have a lot of props, the "thermometer" (That's what I'm calling it, not sure if it's the real name) fills up pretty slowly. Finally, the terrain deforming does NOT slow down the PSP as much as I thought it would. All in all, you'll seriously regret not buying this game the day it comes out

I would, but I hung up my hacking skills a while back. Besides, I got a demo courtesy of someone at MNRC. It's frustrating, I hope the editors are really good because I'll never do well at the actual racing. Just not my cup of tea I guess.

Oh thanks ThisIsInsane! That is exactly what I wanted to hear! Thank you so much for your response

I'm really glad to hear how smooth the frame rate is and the track studio sounds very fun and user-friendly.

I think I will definitely be buying this game! Thanks again for you reply :hero:

Yeah, it definitely is more user-friendly than LBP. One thing, though. I just noticed that if you deform a very large part of terrain at once, the framerate does slow down a little. It's still workable and not terrible, but it is noticeable. That's the only time I noticed the framerate slow down at all, so, it's still very good.

Sorry for my delayed reply to this.. Honestly I hadn't played it enough to give proper feedback. I've managed to catch up though, so here's my thoughts.

I haven't played the PS3 version at all, so I have no basis of comparison for if it's better or worse. What I can tell you is that there is definitely a learning curve associated with the game, but heck - it's a racer. Although I don't have an extensive kart racing background, I have played ridiculous amounts of Wipeout, Burnout, and Gran Turismo, so I feel like I can weigh in on MNR's race-y-ness. It drives very well, although I found the steering to be a little more twitchy than I expected. After a few races though, it felt totally natural and I was shredding the turns without crashing.... much. Still, it took me a bit of doing before I found myself winning an occasional race, and you can bet that online racing is going to be HARD. I don't expect to win much, but I do expect to have fun losing.

The drifting is quite good, and by that I mean that it is neither too easy nor too hard. You do have to plan it a little, but once you catch a corner at the correct angle it's awesome to drift through those long sweepers and watch your boost pile up. There are a nice variety of weapons, although I'm still not comfortable enough with the game yet to think about which weapon will be best when, and whether or not I should use it or save it for later. The weapon system is reminiscent of Wipeout in that regard, which means it's well made and has excellent flexibility, provided you know what you're doing. The rearward firing option is great.

The tracks are gorgeous. I am most excited about the graphics in this game, because everything hums along smoothly despite a screen full of action. Colors are bright, lines are clean, and the landscape is beautiful regardless of whether it's whizzing by or you're stopped staring at it. The weapon effects are cartoony but good, and the karts and mods are very detailed. People will have a lot of fun with personalizing their mod/kart combo, that's without a doubt.

The sounds are very good and appropriately layered. I didn't feel bombarded with a wall of audio, but it also didn't seem like everything was too quiet. It's all very upbeat and fun to listen to, although after about 45 minutes of listening to my pit crew chief provide mildly-helpful-but-snarky comments I desired the ability to shove said comments up his tailpipe. Hopefully there is an option to shut him up. The engine sounds, tire squealing, and "woo hoo!" sounds are nicely done and provide for a good audio atmosphere. I'm interested to see what other music options the game will come with.

The track editor is, as expected, quite deep and takes some getting used to. It's not nearly as complex as LBP create mode of course, but there's a lot of possibilities. With that said, the only thing you can make is a race track. If you have some cerebral idea for a backstory, a puzzle, or anything that doesn't involve driving around in a loop, you can forget about it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, because it's very fun indeed, but in no way does this game take the place of LBP. The two games complement each other nicely, though, and I envision myself flip flopping between the two depending on my mood. The actual process of making a track is quite fun, however, and the more time you spend the better your track will be. I'm not sure exactly how easy it will be to make a theme-specific track, such as Final Fantasy or Batman or Star Wars or Zelda, but I'm sure people will try. The one thing I'm dreading is the inevitable onslaught of "stomper tracks" whose sole purpose will be to annoy you until your PSP goes for a brief but glorious flight off of a fire escape.

And there's my review of the demo. Should you buy this the day it's released? No. You should buy this the minute it's released! This is a great game and an instant classic. It brings with it the promise of epic online racing, loads of upcoming DLC, unlimited free tracks to download and race on, enough costume and kart customization to make your head spin, and plenty of ways to satisfy that creative itch. I can't wait for the full version.
