Is Kick-a** the best movie ever?

Archive: 25 posts

I know that I'm the only one who thinks that way cause it seams as the movie was made for me.
It's freaking brilliant! So what do you think of that movie?

Leave a star rating, max is 5 stars and the lowest is 1 star.
I rate it:

We can rate movies we haven't seen now??

I haven't seen it either, so I'm going to go ahead and give it a 1 star. The acting was terrible, the action sequences were really dull, and that one part with the guy's pants, and the balloons, and the rocket turtle? Seriously, that was the craziest thing I've ever seen. Actually I take it back, 5 stars. No, 50. Give it all the stars!

Haha. I did absolutely love it... but but calling it the best film ever would only make sense if you haven't seen many good films 2010-04-22 09:15:00

I've seen many movies but this one really appealed to me. I went into the cinema not expecting much and came out blown away. It's the movie's style that I like so much, it's dark and **** up and jet it so **** funny and has great (mostly epic) characters.2010-04-22 09:57:00

I had an alright time. It was a pretty fun movie? I don't feel extremely in either direction. I'm certainly not about to bash it, though I didn't really agree with much of how they handled it. But I didn't love it either. I saw it at the ghetto theater down the street, and I'd say it was worth the 8 bucks. The young girl was surprisingly amazing. I think she's 13? I looked her up and it looks like she's mostly a voice actor, but she did a fantastic job here, sort of stole the show anytime she was onscreen.2010-04-23 08:30:00

I assume you're referring to the rocket turtle? Sad indeed...

Haven't gotten around to seeing it yet and I don't know that I will. The trailers never really appealed to me and the controversy upon its release isn't really pushing me one way or another either. According to one credible source, the film will hit Blu-ray and DVD on June 30. I can wait two months...

The controversy mainly comes down to the fact that you've got a 12-year old girl violently murdering people. Without any worry about the repercussions.

I mean, I understand the movie's satire, but the early stuff the movie has to say about violence and what it means to be a superhero - pretty realistic and somewhat gritty and unexpected and very interesting stuff - is completely, totally thrown out by the movie's end. I'm just sayins! If you're going to PRETEND to have a message, you'd better at least stick with it. Maybe the movie should be called "Half-***"?

I don't know, I've never read the book so I have no idea how that really handled it, but I did see one cover showing a certain character battered and bloody and nearly dead - it's a grisly cover, not fun at all - and the text is along the lines of "Grisly violence, just the way you like it!!"
That sort of 4th-wall breaking schadenfreude joke didn't feel to me like remotely a part of the movie, which set out to glorify the same violence it appears to condemn early on. You do see that sort of stuff in "Funny Games", but I didn't find it in this movie. If this was the source of Kick-***'s satire, then it really only went halfway. Even Unbreakable, of which I'm seriously NOT a fan, at least stuck to its guns.

Out of all the "subversive" comic book movies - The Incredibles, Watchmen, Unbreakable, Kick-*** - I would say Kick-*** is firmly at the bottom of the heap in terms of telling its message effectively. This doesn't necessarily KILL the movie. You can still go in and have a fun enough time watching a very colorful action flick and munching on popcorn. But the entire point the movie's trying to make essentially falls to pieces by the end and that's what we're left with - a colorful action romp with lots of glorious *** kicking.

This is obviously going to appeal to some people and frustrate others.

Ok, i'm 14 years old, 15 in 2 weeks and i really badly want to see this, but i can only go with my mum since my friends are away. My mum will be able to stand the violence and the gore and the langauge, but what i'm worred about is if the sexual content will be a big roadblock.
Can anyone that's seen it please tell me if there is much sexual content, and if it's bad or fine? I really just wanna see it but i don't think i can if the sexual content is too much.

The sexual content is, it's there, but they don't SHOW anything. The girls constantly show cleavage and one girl is naked while the guy is giving her a tan? But she's covering her twins with her hands, lol. They also cuss quiet a bit, and at one point they get it on but once again, nothing is shown. In all honesty I wouldn't go with your mom.

Hahahahaha... Ooooh boy. There's one scene people are forgetting about here. The sex scenes are NOTHING to worry about if you're going with your mom. They're very wholesome, clean sex scenes.

If you're A) 14 years old, and B) trying to avoid awkwardness with your mom, it's the masturbation scenes you want to worry about.

Probably even more funny if your mom is sitting right next to you. If by "funny" you mean "eyeball-gougingly awkward".2010-04-24 20:33:00

OK - We saw this on Sunday afternoon. Wow... In answer to the OP: No - not the best movie ever. But a darn good one. The controversy really is warranted as there is a 12 year-old sociopathic girl who steals a lot of the scenes, and the movie as reference to the source material or as a message on violence, really does get lost. But as a tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top comedy/action/thriller, it is very satisfying. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.2010-04-27 12:44:00

The controversy really is warranted as there is a 12 year-old sociopathic girl who steals a lot of the scenes Meh, I don't really see a problem with it. I mean, Hit Girl has nothing on sociopathic vigilante characters like Rorschach and The Comedian from The Watchmen and TBH, I don't see her age as being a significant issue. The fact that the writers/directors/actors managed to pull off the character, that could so easily have been completely cringeworthy, and do it well is something to applaud, not condemn. I'm sure that plenty of people would disagree with me, but the "Child+violence+'bad' language = BAD" reaction seems like a bit of a knee-jerk thing here. What exactly is it people are afraid of here?

the movie as reference to the source material or as a message on violence, really does get lost.. Was it supposed to have a message? IDK, I haven't read the comics, but surely they are pretty similar, what with the comics / screen play being written together. Actually, has anyone here read the comics? And if so, what are they like?

No, I agree with you here - so perhaps "warranted" was the wrong choice of word. My point is that those who would criticize the movie for it's gratuitous violence will further be fueled (and presume themselves justified) by the character's age and gender. But I'm not siding with the knee-jerk reactionists.

yeah, I don't really know either. This remark was based on several reviews that I read.

I haven't read the comics either, but this is something that was interesting to me watching it. Undoubtedly, especially early on, there's a pretty clear point of view. "bad *** comic book violence" is not just unrealistic, but dangerously unrealistic. And as far as the point of view of the comic book, there is this cover:

http://imgur.com/KJ1Hr.jpg

Now I can say pretty clearly that the heavy dosage of anti-schadenfreude satire on display here is WAY watered down in the movie, and by the end of it completely dissolved into another gloriously violent comic book action flick. If the comic book revels in the violence later, as the movie does, is there a clearer condemnation of it, as there is on this issue's cover? Beats the crap out of me! But it was NOWHERE NEAR the movie I saw. A fun action flick it may have been, but nuance was not part of the equation.
