Instant explosion

I'm trying to make a boss for my Phantasy Star Online inspired level. One of the bosses casts a fire spell which is basically an explosion all over the area of the player. I'm looking for a way to replicate an explosion all around the player with a few spots being safe and it being probably pure luck. This is the final boss, all his attacks are cheap. hhhmmm... well an instant explosion?
you could make a bomb with a magnitic key switch on it and a magnitic key and the switch would be connected to the bomb

yea place a bomb, put a magnetic switch on it, hook it up to the bomb set the switch to inverted, capture object, this must all be done in pause, shrinking a bomb will not decrease its explosion radius btw 2010-04-21 04:42:00

Lol, after I posted this I went experimenting. I blew myself quite a few times in the process. Thanks for the help. At first I was using the bomb with the timer but then I thought what if I just had em next to each other. Than I came here and tried it after I saw what was posted. Me and a friend had some fun placing them. Although it's hard to place it and be fair. Both moves I've set up practically are sure kills. I'll need some in depth testing to make it fair. I still think his final form would be more cheap, one hit KOs no matter where you are. Light orbs that follow you. Super strong physical attacks. It'll make him a fun but tough boss if I ever make him.

I wonder if there is a way to make ice type attacks. Any ideas? If not I'll leave it to explosions and lasers.

I was just working on moves for another boss. I'm trying to make a player tracking missile. It can follow the player maybe for 3 seconds before blowing up.

Be careful when using this type of technique - it looks pretty cool if you can pull it off, as instant bombs look a lot tidier than speedily emitted ones. Many people like a challenging boss, but dislike being killed without any place to dodge. Instant kills are cheap shots - give the player some warning, such as a light or sound - to tell them to get out of the way. Then attack that area with the instant bombs.2010-04-21 18:12:00

Thanks for the heads up. I guess without knowing I already made a few safe spots. Odd how it worked out so good. Although lasers are sure kill, oh well I'll make them not appear much. Make it so that they fear the mighty lasers! MWUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I don't want to make another topic because then I'll feel like I'm spamming these boards. What is a good way to make a floor the collapses when you walk over it? In a level I'm making it so a person is going one way and it collapses and they are in a tunnel now.

Answering your question about the collapsing floor, just take a segment of floor (that isn't attached to the rest of the floor, of course) and cut through it with dissolve in a few places. Then place a sensor switch and hook it up to the dissolve. For extra awesome points, attach a breaking sound effect to some of the dissolve and set it to 'On Destruction'.2010-04-22 22:49:00

Thanks. It worked like a charm.

For the same level is it possible to have a door or something activate when a monster is killed? The monsters won't have brains, it'll be the health bar thing.

I'm going to have a few rooms, well just areas with doors separating them, that can only pass through if the enemy is defeated. I haven't played around too much with enemies besides making attacks and stuff. I haven't even made a moving enemy, most of the bosses from Phantasy Star Online were huge and moved a little or you attacked when they stopped moving.

hmmm... you could have a magnetic switch on the floor, directional, inveted, conecctit to the door, and put a magnet key on the boss/monster
(theres probebly a more efficaint way but thats wat i thought of)

and for extras add a object complete sound to the switch
