Patrick's Tale (LBW4)

Archive: 36 posts

Patrick's Tale (LBW4)TheCountessZ
After a long voyage your ship arrives in a quaint fishing village. The town ghost asks for your help, needing to be redeemed since he was accused some years ago of stealing the King's treasure.

The story was inspired by my great friend Pounded_By_Slave while we were goofing around in create mode. He planted a skull in a funny place and I could never make myself get rid of it. So I named it Patrick.

Fairly simple but suggest 1 - 2 players, though more can play with good friends and cooperation.

Thanks go out to jwwphotos, AccumulationNone, FlyingHaggis, and of course Pounded_By_Slave. They all supported with technical advice, design, and great company. And thanks to the many play-testers.

This is a really fun and charming level. Not a dull moment from the minute your ship docks. If you’re not being entertained by snipets of dialogue from the inhabitants, you’re trying to reach enticing piles of bubbles and of course hunting for the six bells. The gameplay is fun and varied and by no means a push-over. I loved your galleon enemies and those evil guffawing barrels, lol! The visuals are great too. I particularly liked the vaulted cellars with the barrels and the village itself has lots of lovely details. Nice use of the 3d glitch as well.

I only have a couple of suggestions and they’re really only very minor things. There’s a section where you pull a switch and some moving barrel platforms appear. It’s possible to avoid the platforms altogether by dropping into the front layer. If that was intentional, i.e. you were giving people an easier option, then I think it would be nice if there were some reward for doing the platforms such as a pile of bubbles on each barrel. Of course I may be missing the point entirely and the idea is that you get to skip the barrels by working out that there's an alternative! The other thing I’ll put in a spoiler just in case.

While 5 out of the 6 bells are hidden, there’s one visible one which you have to work out how to access. It’s only a plain prize bubble. I think it would be nice if it had some kind of bell sticker/decoration on it, if possible. However, if it’s been made plain on purpose so that people don’t spot that it’s a bell straightaway then just ignore this comment!

Anyway, the level has bags of charm and was great fun to play. 5 stars and a heart.

EDIT: Oops, I forgot to say, best of luck in the contest!

Thank you so much. And good luck with your entry. I really like this month's theme.

Thank you so much, Shropshirelass. I debated about that bubble, and knew it might throw people off a bit. I'll think on that one. And being able to drop down...that was another weird issue. It's the thin layer in front causing that. Good idea about putting bubbles on the barrels!

Well, you already know my feelings on this one as I have seen it grow from one house into an entire village.

Pros:
Awesomely cute, adorable and fun. This one showcases your amazing talent on architecture and attention to detail. Beautifully inspired buildings that you can jump around on and in. Fun secrets and funny dialogue escort you along with some really hilarious enemies to the scoreboard. Incredible use of the 3d glitch, though kinda wacky how it drops the frame rate so much in that one section at the beginning. Maybe due to the camera angle? Not sure...

Cons:
I would still like to see some extra bubbles here and there as a bonus for precision jumping off the buildings and in that little slide section back down below. ...but that is being horribly nit picky and please don't beat me!!

Anyway... this level is simply wonderful and charming!!!!

Great work! 5 stars and a warm and fuzzy heart.

Oh... and I have a way to insure they don't drop back down from those barrels that should not affect anything else. Remind me this evening and we can try it.

Good luck in the contest!!

Soooo goooood ! :hero:

I didn't expect that at all before reading your first post. Patrick's Tale reminded me of some Irish stuff

Anyway, that's one of the best pirate level I've ever played ! But it's definitely the pirate city I've enjoyed the most. That's how I like to use the layers glitch. To make great background ! Mostly I find the layers glitch too overdone. Here it's perfect.

Oh, and that's just a detail, but I loved the grate you put in water, just after the bit with the two pubs. It's insignificant, but this makes the scenery really more realistic. Another (bigger) detail I liked, was the kind of tunnels in the cellar, in the background.

Edit : Argh, I knew I had forgotten something. PATRICK ! The ghost. I was impressed to see how you made him, with the emitter. Another clever detail making everything even better.

Brilliant level, Countess!

The visuals were great, making great use of the PotC DLC! The use of the layer glitch was great too!

The conversation between the 2 NPC's at the beginning was hilarious!

The gameplay was very enjoyable and there were very few sections where there is nothing to do. Those bells were mighty hard to find! We only found 3!

There were two instances where you could "escape" the level. At the start, if you swim all the way to the left, you can pass under the invisible dark matter. Also, at the lift/elevator, there's a small gap underneath that you can slip through, where the player is able to swim freely through the level and end up at the scoreboard.

I gave it :star::star::star::star: and a heart! I'd appreciate it if you would give my level some feedback! (The link is in my sig)

Thanks for everything, jw. It's hard to put it in words but your support and encouragement through this was wonderful. Only you could put up with my whining about something breaking, logic not working, and the 160 hour glitch that hit me a couple weeks ago. It wouldn't have been published without your support.

Thank you for your kind words! The details you pointed out were really important to me and I'm so glad you enjoyed them. I felt the same way about the grate. It was such a simple thing, but you're right about it adding something to the level. And Patrick! It took awhile to figure out how I wanted him to look. I wanted him to be young and not menacing, especially since he was innocent. I'm so happy you enjoyed the level.

Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The layer glitch was quite a challenge but I'm really happy I included it. Oh, and thanks for the heads up on the escape issues. I'll work on repairing them tonight. I'll play your level this evening and give you feedback. Can't wait to see it. And thanks again.

Great level Countess.

I thought it sounded familiar and when I played it I realised I'd had the pleasure of playtesting it a while ago. You already know I loved those enemies and the clever way you used the POTC objects for them and also for the platforming sections such as the wheels to swing on. Very ingenious and I wish I'd thought of that.

I just thought the enemies in the cellar section throw a bit too much fire out and it's difficult to see but I didn't lose too many lives there so no biggie.

I did get quite a bit of lag in the town section but it seemed ok everywhere else. I don't know why unless it's the layer glitch ( no comment on that because everyone should know by now that I absolutely hate it with a passion ).

Overall a great fun level with some very clever touches and the right amount of challenge. Well done.

Aw...thanks MrV. That means a lot to me. Yeah, there is a bit of lag up in that area of town. And I agree that it could be that layer glitch. It was fun testing it with you, and I really appreciate it. We'll have to play again sometime, and invite me anytime if you need a play tester.2010-04-22 00:29:00

Miss, this level was totally worth the wait, now here are my thoughts about it...

Pros:
-Freakin' sweet!
-Freakin' hilarious
-Freakin' beautiful
-Freakin' well made
-Freakin' piratey (we all know pirates are better than ninjas)
-Freakin' good gameplay and enemies
-Freakin' Freakin'

Cons:
-One of the speech bubbles is lagging
-It's really fun! ermm.. i mean it's... I'm out of cons about your level :/

:star::star::star::star::star: and a lovely Heart
Loved it and as it's your first one, I love it even more!

****ing great level. I loved this. You utilized water in clever ways, the whole thing looked great. The story wasn't deep, but it was creative and gave me a decent incentive to go forward. The town was very detailed, the platforming was very satisfying and creative, it was all great. Another great thing about this level that I don't see in others is the way the secrets work. The treasure that you get from activating all of the bells is represented in a way that makes you kind of jealous if you don't collect all of the bells. It's like dangling a piece of steak in front of a starving Lion, but always keeping it out of reach until it does a backflip or something. I'm definitely going back to find all these. Great level. 5 stars and hearted.

For F4F, could you check out my level in my sig? Thanks. Loved this level a lot.

I'm so freakin' happy you liked it Chuck. Thanks for the kind words. I'll take a look at the speech bubbles. A few of them are timed...that was a bit freakin' freaky trying to get them timed just right. And thanks so much, not just for play testing, but for always being such a polite and nice guy. Now that I'm done with this I'll check yours out too. I've been neglecting things like that lately.

Wow Awesomemans! Your comments are awesome! Yeah, it's hard to get pretty deep in story telling, so keeping it simple works best in most cases. I'm happy you enjoyed it. I'll sure check yours out...if not tonight then definitely tomorrow!

Cute level CountessZ! Nice work on the town especially - Captain Morgan, heh heh.

I've only managed 4 bells so far, I haven't been able to find my way up to the first tower yet, or get to the one below thats on show. I played it three times, so I'm missing something thats probably obvious and will kick myself for!

Two v. minor suggestions - the boat isn't moving when you first enter the level, a small thing but would help with the immersion if it was.

With the laggy text bubbles near the start, if you can trigger them ever so slightly later, the camera angle doesn't pan out to to the right so much and you lose a fair amount of lag. Either that, or maybe play around with the text camera angles, it only heavily lags when it pulls out to reveal a large chunk of level...

Aye - its great! visually very enjoyable and the shifts in gameplay really keep you on your toes.

I really like the fact that it grew organically from that random skull - it gives the whole thing a certain nutty logic.

Thank you! I took your advice and changed the entry so it triggers the boat to move immediately, along with the speech bubble. I like that a lot better. I thought of that a long time ago but was afraid I'd forget to keep the level pause, and then entering it again in create would blow the perm switch. Glad you pointed that out.

I also changed the camera angle on the first conversation. It's behaving a lot better.

Thanks again and I'm so glad you played it!

I like the suggestions that "other J" gave you and glad you implemented them. The moving boat was something early on we had discussed and I completely forgot about. So nice to have another set of eyes when we have looked at that so much.

Seems to me the only thing missing now is some more plays!

Played this earlier today and thought it was wonderful for a first level. I didn't have any problems with how the level worked, and it was all pretty straightforward. I did have a magic mouth flash by more quickly than I can read it, but I cannot remember which one it was.

The town was very well done, and I laughed at the residence names.

Anywho, I gave it 5 stars and a heart.

I want that treasure, dangit!

Pretty good level, the 3D was nice and I liked the idea of there being this huge secret underground place under that guy's (wainscoat?) house. I only found two bells, apparently, and I don't even remember how. I only remember finding one, so that was confusing. Had no idea that there were hidden bells. Anyway, the length was good, but I found it kind of boring. Not really much else to say, it wasn't a bad level, but it was nothing special either. I gave it 4 stars. Good luck on the contest!

Can you leave feedback on Cemetery Drive (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=25672-Cemetery-Drive) by AbstractSam? Thanks.

I've been meaning to leave you some feedback and haven't had a chance until now

Lots of awesome stuff in this level!

+ Buildings are excellent.
+ The 3D ships are really nice - love how subtle they are but such a great feature!
+ Charming characters & dialogue- I think you may have had history with sea faring types before Dialogue was a little familiar for me. lol

It's got good platforming that's not too hard and plenty of eye candy. The barrel guys are a little tricky in terms of layer switching for me but that's just my personal experience with them and not a real criticism. For a first level it's really good. I know you worked so hard on this too. Nice work.

5 stars and hearted from me

Had fun with this. Some nice puzzles - not too hard, not too easy. Nice architecture and fun characters.

I understand what AbstractSam is saying - it wasn't dull - but could have used a hectic part or two to spice it up. But not every level needs to be an adrenaline rush and sometimes, a nice relaxed level is just what the doctor ordered.

Nicely done, CountessZ

I left you a comment in game but I experienced a broken level... Once the spikes disappear from the floor and you have to pull the chest out (from r to l)... couldn't due it over the uneven tiles... It was lookin purty before that... but I figure if it's entered into a contest my experience could be a big deal if it happens to the wrong player...2010-04-26 02:09:00

I left JWW a similar message (but) for the sake of clarity; [ahem] I pulled it out. Not wanting to drag it all the way across... I immediately tried to jump on the chest to platform to the ledge above but could not. You then rewarded my curiosity by gassing me as I checked out from whence the chest of drawers came... it could have been a secret! but you gas the player--not nice, and believe me,'I' know not nice! Respawned, and the chest wouldn't budge... I'm guessing you only have invisible grab on one side so there was no chance of even 'dislodging it' in the opposite direction--it really is quite heavy.

Your use of "The GLITCH" achieves a nice an overall appealing aesthetic. In fact the entire level is very pleasing on the eye. I would rate the scenery above the gameplay, but with that said, your presentation is really quite sophisticated. Additionally, I do not mean to insinuate I was in anyway bored... even the parts I've done times before in other levels usually had a pleasant twist. One time in particular, I really remember being charmed with the mechanic for opening a door... quite involved. I found the level charming in-fact.

I really would address the 'ringing of the bells' initial speech bubble. It wasn't until the second bell that I realized I wasn't in fact looking for bells in towers (think 'Liberty Bell... which to me sounds like grand fun!)... they just occasionally sound when I go someplace. That first bubble for me, didn't communicate what it needed to.

The dungeons reminded me of a cross between POTC ride and Jabba's Palace... I remember at one point wanting to hit your brown bars with several layers of transpara-black gradient stickers... for what it's worth.

Outside of that, Its just on this side of remarkable. If I'm to understand this is your first level, then it's on the far side of remarkable... Either way, good luck to you Countessz!

I want you to know that I appreciate all your comments..they really helped me look at this a different way. I did fix the "bells" reference to make it better to understand, and I added a bell to the only bubble you can actually see (that's actually the 2nd bell). Others had also suggested that.

I also fixed the floor issue you had. Took me quite some time to tweek it just right, but I'm sure the treasure chest will glide more smoothly. Oh, and I also put a second grabby on the back of the chest, just in case. And sorry for gassing you. I guess that was "not nice". I exchanged the gas with some points bubbles.

I also did some smudging too like you suggested.

Thanks again, and please forgive me for gassing you.

Good level Countess. The background glitch in the outdoors really nice and the dungeon certainly gives you a POTC feeling. It also has a good use of real water and there's a bunch of puzzles to solve. I cracked up during the dialogue between Will and Elizabeth at the beginning of the level and the architectural design is outstanding.

Good LBW4 level.

Sorry it took me soo long to write this, I played it a week ago, so I may be missing a few things I wanted to say, Sorry about that!

Anyway, I REAAAALY liked the environment, it really felt like we were in a POTC place!
I loved how you used the 3D layer, like to show boats behind the houses, that are docked and stuff, that was really nice...

A couple of things, At the part with the chest you pull over so you can jump up, I didn't know you had to pull it, so I just tried jumping up right there, and it didn't work... maybe show, like a railing or something that is like dissolve so it dissolves when the floor breaks....
I liked the hidden bells... that was really cool. I only found five, because i couldn't find out how to get that prize bubble at the start... I will try again soon...

Anyway, I gave it 4 stars and a heart!

Hold on a second... this is your FIRST LEVEL?! Holy cow! (er.. I'm not referring to you there heheheh) That was a fabulous level! I can't believe I missed how to get that bell under the fishmongers. I stood there and thought "well you can't grab that stone". Der! Anyhow, Everyone has said stuff I wanted to say but I will just say I loved it - great visuals (I love little houses :blush, really fun gameplay that was related to the visual atmosphere (which always adds to the fun, for me) and it was so good I didn't even mind that treachery at the end And I laughed plenty, especially at those evil dudes in the barrels. Excellent detail.
If I had to suggest anything at all I'd still like some fist fight sound effects in that pub and some logic to have my sack 'thrown out' the other side... hehehe.
Good luck with the comp, Countess. I'm sure you'll do very well.

This level is great and for many reasons.
The setting is nice, and it's crafted cleverly and with lots of details.
Most of all, it's never overdone, is well balanced and a pleasing experience.
Even the enemies are not something you've seen before, even if I played the level quite a bit after the original release.
I loved the choice of not using a music but leaving the background noises, since they help to dive into the atmosphere of the level.

Great level, a 4,8 stars for me, so I rated it 5 and a heart.
Good to see you unlocked it again!
