Has the innocence gone?

Archive: 21 posts

I remember when I first played LBP, I loved jumping through the cute story levels and used to use create mode to just make stuff, because it was fun and I could do whatever I wanted. But now a few months later I start a level and work for ages on the same theme, creating so people will enjoy my levels rather than just creating random things innocently. I've stopped playing LBP for now so It might come back, but if it doesn't I won't go back; LBP started to become less fun when I created some 'good' levels.

WHEn you create a 'bad' level, you just let your imagination run wild and have fun creating, the end result may be awful, but at least creating was fun where as when you make 'good' levels it's a little more like a chore, still fun but just not.... well you get the idea. anyone else feel the same way?

I've heard of things like burnout where people run out of ideas, but you should really always be creating for yourself. You should enjoy playing through your levels, and it should just be amazing fun to do so! Creating "good" levels shouldn't be what you aim for - rather you should be creating levels you find fun.

I'm sure all of the best creators will agree that it's best to create what you think is fun. Take Ccubagge for example, he creates some great levels that most mainstream gadders wouldn't find easy, or in some cases enjoyable - but to him they're awesome

That is so true. I get so bored with making a level "good" that it never gets done and I just delete it. Most of the stuff on my moon is just one object in a open space, but I have so much fun with it, like my cow blender or my working two hand clock.2010-04-20 16:53:00

i try making levels with themes that are enjoyable to create. if it isn't, it won't be a good level.2010-04-20 17:00:00

Coxy's absolutely right. If you aren't enjoying creating, then what is the point? Obviously, pushing the limits of your creation skills to create something fantastic is going to be a challenge. If that challenge is still exciting and enjoyable in itself then great. If not, then it's probably not worth the effort.

Remember that this is a game. You wouldn't play other games for hours on end if it wasn't fun, so why force yourself to with this? Remember that create mode can still be used for screwing around in. Get a couple of mates round and just mess about. And there are always levels to play. If you are not enjoying creating what you are creating, then it's probably not worth doing. Or at least it is worth taking a break.

Around 95% of what I have created in the last year has never seen the light of day, I haven't published anything playable in 8 months and I've barely been in create for the last month (although various IRL issues have contributed to this), but there is still plenty to do in this game. Just remember the overall reason why you are doing this: for the fun. Anything else should take a back seat

no no, I think you all misunderstand me. I didn't mean it isn't fun; it just... it isn't the same as it first was, you know?2010-04-20 17:08:00

That is so true, rtm233. I haven't made a complete level in months but i still enjoy creating random junk for fun.2010-04-20 17:09:00

i was the same way when i first started, creating what ever came to mind. it was fun but it can't compair to the joy i feal when reading good reviews. i agree that you should make levels that you like play, but if you publish them you put yourself out there to be scrutinzed. if you want people to enjoy your levels then you do have put some hard work into them. if you dont realy care then i suggest you either don't publish them or don't read the comments. My answer to the question is no, the innocence is not gone. i see it all the time when i get 3-4 happy sackies on one moon, every one flying around having fun making stupid little things.2010-04-20 17:22:00

I still create with the same giddy fashion I used to! I love to just mess around, think about things and then create them in create mode

So no, for me the innocence isn't gone - it's like Centurions sig says "Create levels as if there was no community"

It's weird, I never done that messing around phase, I went straight into trying to make a good level although of course I have to like it first! I do enjoy a friend coming into OC and making madness though, when I'm on my own I work on a level and have to say I'm feeling a bit meh at the minute. I have 2 levels in the making and both are promising but I can't think of anything past the intro environments right now. I am just going to take a break for a few minutes lol then I'll be back to it. Just need to sit down and draw some mess and then that might spark something. I guess there is something gone, my first level I wasn't that bothered about, same for my second but as I made my third I felt ok time to polish this stuff to the max and from then on I feel like it has to reach a certain standard. There is a little bit of fun gone from the creating process but getting feedback and whatnot that's good fills in for that bit I think. Having said that my first and second levels aren't very good lol so I think it's a good thing to take it a little bit more seriously but not too much I still have fun, just not right now for some reason 2010-04-20 19:13:00

I love creating.

I never take my levels too serious. Infact, all my published levels I've done are fun to create. I'm not good with detailed environments and all that, I just love making new gameplay.

I know you haven't..... and It's killing me! Seriously, there's two I'm seriously impatient to play but I get why they take a long time to get right.

Coxy, and RTM have this so right. I know when I need to stop being "serious" in create mode, I go to a blank level and just play with my friends. We do crazy stuff and stuff that should never be published but that's the point. There's no pressure to be good or make quality anything. You can attach gigantic rocket engines to milk bottles and launch off glass ramps to your hearts content..... yea, I've done it. So if your "serious" and it's getting to you, give yourself permission to go be a "noob" for awhile. It's very liberating

Just take a break and come back refreshed, its worked for me. Plus, its always fun to create random stuff with freinds, it does'nt have to be published, as long as you have fun building it. 2010-04-21 08:08:00

Just make the level you want! and not what you think other will think is a good level, as long as you enjoy what you making then keep doing it if you find yourself hiting a wall and wanting to stop then its best to stop.2010-04-21 08:33:00

Tbh, to me its fun to make levels of the best quality i can.
Its just fun making little details and building stuff to the best they can look and where you're done being sattisfied with the artwork you've created, at least that's my opinion.

Most people would say that what you have publish isn't 'playable' either

I remember in Wexfordian's creator spotlight, he made a great quote that applies to this.

(I can't completely quote it because the thread was locked.)

Any tips for new creators?
Never feel intimidated by other people's work. There are some great creators out there producing some very complex levels. This does not mean you should just give up now and forget all about it. Create whatever makes you happy and if that's a rocket cheetah on a skateboard with dropping bombs all over the place, go ahead and make it. Enjoy it. The fun comes from being creative and making something you can look at and go "I made that", with a big cheesy grin on your face. There's a million levels out there and you should have a go at making it a million and one.

You know, for about a year and a half I would build a level, say it was my last.... and just as I was starting to publish a new idea would suddenly pop into my head... and I would start building again.

Right at this moment I've been having a problem thinking up new ideas, and I certainly don't think it's a problem - I'm enjoying a bit of down time. It's nice simply going out there and playing other people's creations a bit.

Is LBP dead? Nope. And I hope it never dies, because it's truly one of the greatest ways I've seen in many years for people to express themselves. It's like every level is a little piece of interative artwork that shows others something about yourself - and I've had more enjoyment seeing people express themselves than I could ever have imagined.

Interesting little story - I was at a local Apple store earlier today picking up some accessories for my iPad (yup...got one). The subject of LittleBigPlanet came up, and it turned out the son of the employee I was talking to LOVES many of my levels. I was floored. Periodically this game just reaches out and gives me another big hug.

I guess that's true but to me it's more fun making people happy and having fun with my level.2010-04-22 02:58:00

To be completely honest, I've had more fun creating the better I've gotten. I'm not quite sure where you're coming from. I just don't understand this whole "innocence" concept. The best levels I've seen have been really creative. I've actually been happier creating when I know that the level I'm creating is going to be better than my last attempt. And you shouldn't feel like you have to create a high-quality level if you don't feel like it. Just express yourself, dude. 2010-04-22 19:51:00
