Do you restart work on your levels if you don't like how they turned out?

Archive: 29 posts

Well do you? I get this problem constantly and I always start the level a new (creating it). Do you just do the same or try to make something better out of it?2010-04-20 16:32:00

You dropped this: like

That said, I don't like deleting levels. I would rather just let them sit and collect dust in case I want to come back to it later. Mrsupercomputer, on the other hand, will scrap a completed level on a whim and build it again. Weirdo.

I'm with Comp on this one - I always keep levels however bad they are just in case at one point I want to come back. On the other hand, sometimes I'll not like the start of a level I've been doing and just not save when I leave. Generally the first save = saving the level forever 2010-04-20 17:16:00

I sometimes complete levels, of which I later don't like. I don't scrap them completely, I go through the level and destroy what's bad, and keep what's good. I then don't have to waste time recreating everything, because I already have some.2010-04-20 21:39:00

Sort of... quite a bit of what I do is in workshops where I make several versions. So what I start with may end up completely different, but I usually have the original whatever it was laying around for some silly reason. With the additional profile space, it hasn't really been an issue having extra stuff around.2010-04-20 22:07:00

I've deleted full levels a couple of times, ones that were mostly completed and took me a few weeks to create, simply because I didnt think they were good enough. I always restart them and add in the bits I like from the old one and rework the bits I did'nt into a better design. I'm actually having doubts about the new Mars Attacks level that 90% complete at this moment, I don't know whether to scrap it and restart or not

I've also deleted a perfectly good level that was 75% complete whilst inebriated. I thought it was rubbish, turned out the next morning it wasn't, it was perfectly OK but it was to late then.

I leave ideas on my moon though, I've got a couple of workshops filled with stuff, the thermo is bursting on both, and a few level ideas, I never delete them because they have, and probably will, come in handy in future. I restarted Mars Attacks 3 when it was almost finished and restarted it, using stuff pulled from other unfinished levels

I got a level i fell i could make better or that i now have the skills/ materials/ objects/ tools to revamp it i'll tear down that level and rebuild it a-new.
Maybe keep some similaritieas and areas of the old version, revamping them of course.

Just look at what happened to my Shinan Fortress Lavels, i didn't like the fact that they looked bad so i destroyed and am currently rebuilding them now that i can do it way better than before.

I had my first encounter with this recently. I had been working a couple of weeks fiddling with one project and although not complete it was getting there. I have ended up completely redoing it on another part of my moon. I am going to copy objects I already made over to the new one and keep some similar structure here and there but in general it's looking quite different. I only started on this revamp the other day so who knows when this updated one will see the light of day.2010-04-21 10:43:00

I do this all the time I have built quite a few levels, or parts of levels but haven't published anything since I always want to change them and make them better. Maybe one day I'll publish something.2010-04-21 11:35:00

I still have some unfinished stuff on my moon. I don't know if I'll ever go back to them.
I keep em there for sentimental reasons, and the fact that they might come in handy one day.

It's true! Both Manufactured Madness and Zephyr Valley 2 were about 90% complete when I decided I was unhappy with the layout, deleted the whole thing, and started over. It is a weird thing to do, but I think the levels turned out better because of it.

That being said, I'm gonna try my best to avoid such rebuilds in the future. They drained me!

I have started to build a level, then thought about it and played it a couple of times and kept it there for me to build on it later.
The next time I'm on LBP, I don't even look at it, just delete hours of work. Makes perfect sense.

I have the same thing happen with my levels to, but this happens when I have my trusty college ruled paper and pencil with my level layout written down. I generally scrap a level design BEFORE I actually get started on it. I have also done the same with a level that is a w.i.p, my current level that I'm working on has gone through about 5 different versions, I pretty sure the one I'm settled on now will be a better choice than the others I had.2010-04-21 16:11:00

I would. But this would be after all tries to make it worthwhile would have have failed.
But this doesn't really happen to be because I try to plan my levels before making them.

I used to delete all my levels, just to end up having the urge to go back and find out that I deleted it. Now I'm smart and don't delete them for maybe 3-6 months. Or until I know I won't work on it again...2010-04-21 21:13:00

I build levels in small workshops. Every small workshop has to be good, and I remake it as many times as needed till I'm happy with it.
Then I add it to the level.
When I start a level, I build the first workshops like if it was the final version, and if it works I go on with it, but if it doesn't... I don't delete it, but I just keep it in case I need some of the in objects...

I build in the same way as poms. I have my gameplay saved in many spots on my moon and get them to what I think is as good as I can get before adding them into the level.2010-04-22 16:32:00

I sometimes lose interest in the way a level's going. When this happens I leave it in suspense and work on other ideas. More often than not I end up revisiting these 'held' levels and they get reworked or revamped with new ideas and new directions. It's also dependant on the forecast length of the level in question. If it's planned to be a longish one, or I've worked on it for a while, it gets saved for later. Smaller levels may just get scrapped if they don't work.2010-04-24 13:08:00

To answer your question BC, doesn't everybody?

I can't count how many times I've deleted something, just to make it better--trial and error is a natural part of life.

Having played your creations before, you also appear to be a perfectionist, so I've come to expect nothing less from you. If you're not happy with one of your creations, and you feel the need to scrap it and start fresh, that's really all that matters.

Just let us all know when your next masterpiece is ready to play.

I don't delete my levels or parts
i did that once during The Crazy Pollo 3 but it was also a breakthrough for me as a creator
because of that there's now a Before TCP3 and an After TCP3(wow first time i've used an acronym for my series)
now i just make sure the level is exactly as i want it ti be while creating, even if that means staring at the screen for half an hour thinking what's next

If I dont like my level visually,
Ill just delete everything that is not gameplay related and start over visually.
(arena of gladiators got 3 overhauls).

If the gameplay really sucks, ill just delete out the parts that suck.
though I have deleted a few levels in the past, one being a 4x level I finished but didnt like,
Also in my UT Env Artist days Ive often deleted levels,
Ive redone CTF-Criquell about 9 times before my hard drive gave up on me and I was not ableto salvage anything from it,
Kinda lost 8 maps because of crashy drives and back then uploading 50 mb was a big nono

But the worst thing ever is..
Having other people decide about the fate of your level.
(I created a giant cave-system for "The Chronicles of Spellborn" that took me 6 weeks to build) just to hear that they wanted a different design for it.
They agreed on visuals, agreed on layout.. and after 6 weeks of hard work they wanted something else..
So I created a new cave, a much much bigger and grander one.. In your face crazy waccko game-designers.
(they really sucked hard)

Sometimes I make a level, but then I look at it and decide either that I didnt put enuf effort into it or it looks to n00bish.

So I just remake it

For instance I made a MW2 (the pit) level. I made it in about one minite LOLZ So I remade it and now its much better.

All the time, though, when I am still content with something I am making and a new thought hits me, I will keep the idea on my moon. If I find it rubbish, it goes into the great big nothing.2010-04-28 17:34:00

I don't delete anything, but I have abandoned a level that was nearly done before. I'm glad I did, too, because it was the original Crystal Cave level. I ended up completely redoing it a few months later after I had learned a whole lot about how things work in the game.

I have a lot of things lying around on my moon that I never finished, including a level that is probably 90 percent of the way done. I still don't know if I'll abandon it or come back and finish it yet. I definitely don't have the time or energy to start it over, but I think it's starting to look dated.
