Night Angel's PS3 and PSP Reviews!

Archive: 65 posts

http://i40.tinypic.com/63rmg9.jpg

Night Angel here accepting Level Review Submissions! I said to myself one day, "Self, sometimes you get bored creating and maybe you just feel like playing some really cool levels. However, sometimes you have a couple of opinions on some levels to make them really cool! Well, make a review thread, duh!" THE END

http://i39.tinypic.com/15wkty1.jpg

I'm sometimes busy every now and then, so sometimes I might not be able to get to a level until later
I'll usually review about 2-3 levels per week, and maybe sometimes I'll add a level to review out of personal preference
Really cool levels will probably get a more detailed review than others. It's usually based on the amount of content in the level
You may submit your level by either: POSTING HERE, SENDING A MESSAGE THROUGH PLAYSTATION NETWORK (My PSN = NightAngel321), or SENDING A MESSAGE VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE. Please use only ONE method.
I may review other levels before yours, so please be patient
Hope you don't take any criticism too hard. Trust me, I'm not trying to insult your level. If possible, I'll try to give some ways to improve it.
I'll try to review both PS3 Levels and PSP Levels. However, PS3 levels may come first in priority
Check marks (✔ indicate a level that has been reviewed, but awaits posting, most likely due to an effort to post a handful of reviewed levels at one time.
X-Marks (✘ indicate a level that has been skipped and not reviewed, most likely due to an inability to finish the level either through the level's errors or shortcomings or intense difficulty.

Waffle World 2: Syrup City by Awesomemans
"Waffle World 2: Syrup City" is a very lighthearted level filled with sea-plundering and fork forts...of doom!

Gameplay: 7/10
Although no interesting and new gameplay elements were introduced, the level held its own in a platforming perspective. The enemies were humorously relevant to the situation, and your humor was shown through the pretty funny references in the text bubbles.

Visuals: 6/10
The level was mostly reliant on the textures in most sections not including the characters. This isn't necessarily a bad thing. However, I was hoping for more of a creative approach when using the Caribbean level kit items. I would have loved to see you detail the water sections more and used your layers a more within the fort. On the other hand, the waffles were intelligently designed with the stickers, and it was very enjoyable to see their different expressions.

Audio: 7/10
The audio was very appropriate for this level. Sound objects did add a little extra (i.e. the hilarious crying baby waffle), and the PotC music was a nice, if not necessary, addition. The audio in general was above average. I honestly could not give a suggestion on improving its audio seeing as how its very unique in its own waffle right...

Originality: 8/10
Waffles are original even if they're in a video game about waffles. The funny additions added in the references were very nice, and the characters were something I have never seen before. It's original, alright!

Replay Value: 3/5
A standard level with nothing in particular to replay unless you have an obsession with funny-looking waffles!

OVERALL SCORE 7.0/10 (Not an Average)
"Waffle World 2: Syrup City" is a very original and funny platformer based around the ambitions and actions of LittleBigPlanet Waffles. This pirate-food-filled land is surely a worthy plunder in yer spare time...matey.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Basement by bonner123
"The Basement" is a funky level mixing a variety of platforming and puzzles that give the player a wholesome experience.

Gameplay: 9/10
This level stood out to me with its distinct characters and extremely varied platforming and puzzles. The pistons, wheels, etc. were executed very well. The puzzles were also simple, yet very effective. Although a little on the easy side, I see no reason to change the formula. And it's also of note the little bit of humor you threw in there (I fell for the "FAIL" trick..). Very well done!

Visuals: 8/10
The level's art style seemed to be simple and funky all at one time. The crazy characters and stickers you've placed throughout the level were well-played. You've used your materials very well and effectively focused your theme.

Audio: 7/10
Sounds were very prevalent throughout the level as well as some appropriate background music. However, at times I felt it was a little quiet when retrying some of the more slightly difficult platforming areas (My skills are to blame...). Other than that, I really like what you did with the sounds and music and they sure were noticeable.

Originality: 8/10
Yeah, there are other platforming/puzzle levels out there, and there are certain art styles like this out on LittleBigPlanet. However, with the blend of funky characters, colorful stickers, and engaging and varied puzzle and platforming obstacles all in one, this level stands out all on its own.

Replay Value: 3/5
You most likely would want to play this over again if you enjoy the characters, obstacles, and art style of the level. Other than that, don't expect any hidden prizes

OVERALL SCORE 7.8/10 (Not an Average)
While Platforming and Puzzle-Solving have always been an integral part of the LittleBigPlanet, bonner123 makes a statement with his wit and imagination. Be ready to take some time off as you jump, solve, and let out a chuckle here and there.

Ghost Survival Challenge by Mopthefloo
"The Ghost Survival Challenge" is a very unique level in which you are in a circle dodging oncoming ghosts in order to make it to the green squares in the several mazes.

Gameplay: 5/10
Being in a little ball avoiding ghosts can be quite fun and challenging. Yet, when the levels are very stagnant, and there isn't anything freshening up the gameplay as you continue to pass through the levels, it starts to become plain. I recommend adding some movement to the level other than the ghosts. A couple of pistons bringing "life" to the level really goes a long way.Additionally, a slightly farer camera angle would probably benefit the level greatly. It's not very fun not knowing what the layout is at all and immediately floating into a ghost.

Visuals: 2/10
Yeah, there were visuals presented in the level but the grid material doesn't fit the ghost theme at all. Go all-out with scary decorations. The ball you float around it doesn't seem to go at all with the theme. Plaster it with some scary goo and cloth, or maybe make it into something. Also, it will go a long way to use some darker global lighting with some lights maybe near the borders of the maze. Instead of making the objective a bland, green square, maybe make it a swirly cloud of blue or a sparkling light. Just have fun making the level look scary.

Audio: 3/10
The audio was very lacking in this survival level. The only sounds that were involved was the background Monster Kit music. One thought is to speed it up as you go to harder levels, add some ghostly sounds to the ghosts, and add some ambient effects to the level. I'm sure these could greatly improve the atmosphere of your challenge.

Originality: 6/10
Sure, there have been quite a few ghostly survival challenges, but yours does stand out a bit from the pack. I admire the difficulty of the challenge as well as the ghost being able to travel through walls. With a more defined theme and creativity, I'm sure your level will make a mark.

Replay Value: 3/5
The ability to learn from your mistakes and try the level over again adds a little replay value into the mix. However, with the lack of a defined theme and no incentive to continue the level pulls back the reason to replay. I suggest adding some different colors for the layouts of each new maze, or add some funky additions to them to give each maze its own vibe.

OVERALL SCORE 4.1/10 (Not an Average)
While "The Ghost Survival Challenge" is not one of the better survival challenges on LittleBigPlanet, the concept of it really shines through. With hard work, creativity, and more time, I'm sure this level will turn out really good. Until then, I can't wait to see how it looks after Mopthefloo spruces it up.

Yeti In The Alpine! by Fastbro
"Yeti in the Alpine" has you returning to the slippery slopes from the story mode in search of Clock Hans' missing grandfather clock.

Story: 5/10
The storyline is this level was full of light humor but had the feeling of being "broken." Although the story had humongous potential, as soon as I entered, I felt like I was "pushed" right into finding the grandfather clock without so much as a decent and well-evolved backstory. The Story Mode levels do a good job at providing a little bit more of a background to the current situation, and I didn't feel like I was on a fun adventure through this sequel. I didn't understand why Little Hans was just sitting out in the snow and why the funny-looking, skinny guy was blocked by this strange obstacle that could be blown up. Some words such as "theif->thief" and "could've -> couldn't've or couldn't have" were mispelled, and the ending was a letdown. I would have at least enjoyed to return the clock itself to Clock Hans somehow. Although I respect the humor that was present, I didn't enjoy the story you gave; a lot of potential, but not enough execution.

Gameplay: 6/10
You were able to take some present stables of the story levels and add your own gameplay mechanics in the mix, which I liked. I had a fun time jumping on the hands of the spinning clock near the beginning and other platforms. However, I felt that this level was incredibly short. I'm not sure how much thermo it took up, but it seems that you could have done a lot more with the gameplay if the level was much longer. The story mode Alpine levels have a lot of different puzzle mechanics in them and are more complex than most of the others, and I didn't see much of this in this level.

Design: 7/10
The visual design of this level was fairly decent and seemed to coincide with the theme very well. You used appropriate materials and stickers that gave a similar appearance to Cambridge's creations. I have a few nitpicks (snow humor) though: (1) the sign to where to place the key should appear after the player grabs the key, (2) I don't feel sticky/post-it note stickers should be placed inside caves, (3) the small indent after the obstruction has exploded should be wider; it's very easy to get stuck there, forcing a Try Again, (4) I would have liked the yeti to have been more animated instead of stone still. The overall constistence of your level outweighs the nitpicks; and with the level longer, it can only get better in design quality.

Audio: 7/10
The sound objects you used and the babble of the various characters really added a lot of life to this Alpine sequel. The one thing I didn't like too much was the background music. I would have enjoyed myself more if it was Alpine story level music instead of music from DLC. However, some people may like the current music, and you may not want to change it if you feel like it belongs.

Originality: 8/10
Yes, this level is a sequel, but you've managed to put your own style of platforming and your own ideas into it. Most people would have been more direct with the transfer from story mode level to custom sequel, but I'm glad you didn't do that.

OVERALL SCORE: 6.8/10 (Not an Average)
Fastbro has managed to create a fitting and potentially wonderful sequel to the Alpine story level series, but its slight plot awkwardness, design quirks, and condensed adventure manages to bring the level down a notch. Time is all this level needs to be like one of the Alpine family.

The Great Palace of Emitters by Coxy224
This nifty palace constructed by the crafty Coxy will have you going crazy (in a good way) as you try to ace it for the coveted Coxy Ribbon!

Gameplay: 10/10
The number one thing I loved in this very challenging yet fun level was the use of emitters. You were able to use one small, circular tool and create a canvas of varied gameplay and platforming twists. You created an adventure of trial and error, while not letting it be too frustrating. My favorite (or least favorite) part in trying to ace the level was the falling blocks. After trying a couple of times, I was able to find a pathway to the top without dying...That's dedication.

Design: 10/10
The Great Palace was simple and very well themed. You used the DLC Materials effectively as well as your planes. You were also very skilled at using the Corner Editor without accidently merging materials. The Great Magician/"look-alike" looked really cool, too. Matching colors, squares, and DLC equal win in this case.

Audio: 9/10
The Temples music fit very well with the level, considering the theme and all. Sound objects were included at proper times, and they allowed the player to understand what was going on (Magician roar at the end). Nice work!

Originality: 9/10
I believe I understand where most of the inspiration came from when considering the PS3 Story level, but you managed to take that level and squeeze it into a true showcase of the power of the emitter and an excellent platformer, while still adding your own flavor in the mix.Your choices of gameplay and what you did with the emitters were truly original.

OVERALL SCORE: 9.5/10 (Not an Average, except in this case it is )
Coxy224 has been able to take one tool, turn it up to turbo mode, and dish out gameplay, style, originality, and difficulty all in one PSP level. If you haven't already, turn on LittleBigPlanet PSP and play this challenging level of fun and unique platforming. Then, try to ace it and receive the fabulous Coxy Ribbon! That is...if you're up to the challenge.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Frostbite by Fastbro
Frostbite by Fastbro is a fast-paced survival challenge that will have you jumping from crate to crate covered in ice until you fall onto the electric conveyor belt.

Gameplay: 8/10
This survival challenge was simple and entertaining. The gameplay aspect of it is universal and can be very inviting to anyone that plays it. The jumping had me on my sacktoes until the belt revved up and I was electrocuted. The challenge was fast and frantic.

Design: 7/10
I believe you managed to capture the style of the "army base" well and used some matching materials and built some appealing crates to generate your theme to the fullest. However, I felt you placed some stickers randomly at the beginning, and I didn't feel the three platforms were necessary to get to the prize bubble. I would have rather seen a sort of "junky" room with the prize bubble within easy reach. The small pathway to the left of where the hole to the challenge is (which is reachable with a well-timed jump), should either (1)be easier to reach and contain a prize bubble or (2)be shut off completely. I also would of rather seen the wooden text signs in a different material and not in the foreground layer (if possible). The bright wood didn't match the grungy theme, and I wasn't able to see my Sackboy for a few seconds when the sign popped out. These little things are very easy improvements, and I'm sure the level's quality would be much better if they were fixed.

Audio: 5/5
I enjoyed the siren sounds and the background music in the beginning as well as the music in the actual challenge. The blabbing of the funny soldier was also entertaining. You sold the theme really well!

Originality: 8/10
From my experience of playing LittleBigPlanet, I haven't seen a survival challenge quite like this one here, and it's great to play a good Survival Challenge every once in a while. You didn't break the mold, but you sure did provide your own tastes inside a genre of similarities.

Replayablility: 8/10
I probably played this level about four times before I decided to keep the high score that I had (which wasn't very high at all ). The increasing speed of the crates and the bolts of electricity had me coming back for another go, so I thank you for that.

OVERALL SCORE: 8.3/10 (Not an Average)
Fastbro's fast and slippery Survival Challenge is a pretty good play when you just want to have fun testing your epic jumping skills and getting a high score. Give it a go and I'm sure everyone will want to try it twice!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Malbora Short Series by valmassoi
"The Malbora's Windmill" and "The Malbora's Volcano" are two original levels based on two mythical brother-and-sister creatures and three-eyed stars, all in one!

Story: 7/10
The storyline of the short series you've created was pretty interesting and quite original. Although the big monster/people in peril has been done before, you've managed to add some interesting characters in the mix to make your levels more unique. There were some points where the characters would know some unusually helpful information at various times; and although you tried to provide a short tidbit for the reason they knew this, I think it conflicted with the flow of the storyline.

Gameplay: 6/10
Your levels take on the idea of a basic yet varied platformer. You had different parts in the level that applied different platforming techniques, such as the wheel, the switch-activated set of platforms, and the "rush scene." The rush part was a small letdown due to me dying once, however. After dying once, I never had time to grab the sponge to reel myself up because the fire/gas always swallowed it before I could spawn. Another thing that really took away from your level was the boss of the first level, too. I spent about fifteen minutes trying to shoot the fireball into its mouth, and it would just not reach the back. Although it could've been my inferior shooting skills, I still wasn't able to finish the level. Just fix that and use your planes more often, and I'm sure the gameplay element would improve!

Design: 5/10
Even though your two levels were unique and interesting, I feel the design of both of them really hurt the overall quality of the levels. Most of the time I felt like I was on one plane, and I rarely saw you use your thin layers to their fullest potential. I also didn't get the feel that I was in "another place" or "another realm." It just seemed like an ordinary level. There were also two cases (the piston-activated set of platforms and the sensor switch/dissolve wheel) that the corners of the material conflicted with other materials and caused the objects to shake. You also should always try to prevent objects to shake and the player from getting stuck. However, you did use the right shapes and stickers at the right time and made some interesting characters.

Audio: 7/10
You used some catchy music that was fitting for the style of the levels. There were nice little sound objects here and there that added a little depth, so it was nice. If you added some more elements to your levels, I'm sure you could've use a lot more sounds.

Originality: 8/10
I expressed my views on your original story and characters in most of the other topics, so refer to those for my thoughts. Who doesn't like a good three-eyed star or two and an egg-laying creature from a mythical realm?

OVERALL SCORE: 6.2/10 (Not an Average)
Although the Malbora Short Series, on the surface, seemed a little weak compared to a lot of really good levels, valmassoi's imagination and cleverness was revealed through the active dialogue and original story. With just more time devoted to visual design and beta testing (from other people), this short series could've been spectacular.

PSN: DRLONG
Level Name: Swimmin' With The Fishies

I really hope you enjoy this level. However, I must warn you it is very difficult and for some reason some people have difficulty even finishing it. But dont let the difficulty stop you because all you need to do is practice and you'll eventually become really good at it. I would strongly suggest taking the tutorial in the beginning of the level if you haven't played it since most people who take the tutorial seem to finish it. I hope this info doesn't make you not want to play it because it is actually a really fun level once you get used to it. Thanks in advance and once again I really hope you enjoy this level!

Sorry for the loooong hiatus, guys, but I'll try to stay as active as possible on these reviews. I currently do not have access to my PS3, so I won't be able to do PS3 Reviews at this moment; you can still request your levels, though! (When I do have access, I'll try to review the levels that have not been reviewed yet up above and then the new ones, even if they're old and you don't care lol.)

I am, however, accepting any and all PSP Level Reviews. I already reviewed valmassoi's series in response to one of my F4F levels. Trying to give both the PS3 and the PSP some love, here! Taking all requests, but only able to review PSP Levels at this moment! Thanks for reading!

i would like a review of my new level. it is a sequel to another level however. in the first level the story goes, your best friend has lost his daughter and you help him look for her, you end up on your own but still looking. its set at the beach where you end up going under the sea.

the second level is the one i want a review on, called Seaside Peril 2, Cave Entrance. where you are swimming under some sea caves and descover unknowingly what looks to be a civilisation of some sort. there isnt too much story here either, im saving the bulk of it for the third level when i get around to making it

any way its a level about exploring underwater caves, its a short level though but long enough for some little play time. id be greatful if you could review it and tell me what could be done to improve it. its my first full underwater level

you can play the first seaside peril too if you like, although i dont really want a review on it, i know its pretty lame and i am thinking of remaking it when i get some more ideas for it

Could you possibly review my level "HMS Doubtless: Part 2". My PSN is michaelhoar.

I cannot stress this enough, it was designed for one player only. Multiplayer's impossible. Oh and if you want to play the first part to get a better understanding of the plotline that might help.

Awesome review service that you have here! I'll be sure to check out Coxy's level real soon. And do you have time to review my Color of Music level? I would really appreciate it if you could.

Thanks!

My PSN is SpiffyMcCracken. I'm making a storyline (for the PS3) called: "No Laughing Matter". The first third of the first level, titled: "The Genova Incident", has been completed. Last checked it had only been played by 8 people, but it had a rating of 5 stars. If I get enough play troughs to warrant my finishing of the story, I will. I probably won't change this first level at all, but any criticism you give will be taken heed for the future levels.

It is short; my thermometer over heated and I was forced to split the level in thirds to compensate for the complexity.
There is more than one path though, so that should help in lengthen the playtime.

Again: any criticism will be helpful!

When you said that, did you mean you just weren't around a ps3 at the time, or did you mean that your ps3 is broken?

Sorry, guys, I've been swamped recently with school just starting and all. I know it's a little setback for now, but... I PLAN TO HAVE EACH AND EVERY REVIEW DONE BY THE END OF THIS SATURDAY. I have a mostly free weekend and that'll give me time to review all of the levels here, PS3 AND PSP! I also have the second level of my Space Temples Trilogy series releasing soon!

Sorry, again, everyone. Life sucks sometimes...Just wait till this Saturday, though. I promise all reviews will be done, even if I have to stay on LittleBigPlanet forever!

Don't worry, guys, I haven't forgotten about you! I just realized that these reviews take a long time (did about six or seven, staying up all Saturday night), because I try to get as in-depth as possible. I also am going to include a little picture for each level reviewed. If you can just give me more time, I will have the reviews up as soon as possible!

Again, sorry for the inconvenience. I honestly tried as hard as I could to get all of the reviews up by Saturday, but it was just a lot and I needed some sleep

Hope you guys understand!

Hey sorry for the late notice, If you haven't started my review for bubbly garden yet, cancel it. It'd be better if you reviewed the whole series as one, when I'm done with all of them. Again, I say sorry for the late notice, but thanks for the awesome thread in the first place

Btw I can't wait for your next space temples level

UPDATE:

Got a few levels reviewed and done tonight. Check back on the Original Post
to see which ones have a check mark ✔ <-(Love that thing)

I felt a little adventurous and did some of the newer submitted levels, but don't worry, the middle levels will be all reviewed and good to go. I'm going at a pretty good pace right now, so all of the levels submitted should be all reviewed fairly soon! I'll make sure to keep you guys posted!

When you get a chance, please check out my latest stage: LBL: 4 in 1 - Gundam Shark Survival Hunter by gevurah22

It shouldn't take up too much of your time considering it is a "survival" mini-game, to say the least. =)

Don't worry about it, all the reviews will pretty much go in order, anyway. So, either post 'em now or post 'em later, I'll still have to review them.

Still hard at work, by the way!

EDIT: It would also be easier if some of you guys post if it's either on PS3 or PSP, just for making it a bit easier. Updated the original post with the new pending reviews. My weekend looks likes it's going to be pretty much free once again, so I plan on getting all of the reviews done and unveil the surprise then.

Sadly, I had to end up taking a last-minute, all-day class today and couldn't finish all of the reviews like I planned. The surprise is still planned to come sometime tomorrow, regardless if I'll be able to finish all of the pending reviews right now, but rest assured, the pending reviews right now will still end up getting reviewed pretty soon.

Can't thank you guys enough for the support! Keep postin'!
