Skeggers' Reviews Put On Hold (Will be continued sometime in the future)

Archive: 52 posts

POOL'S CLOSED!
Right, Straight to the point. This Is NO LONGER A Weekly Review System. Every Sunday And Tuesday, Starting From Today, I will write reviews of two kinds of levels:
1) Ones That I find online and deem worthy of being reviewed
2) Levels that authors request to be reviewed.
As often as I write them, reviews will be posted here all in one go. I will be accepting requests on any day of the week on any level you ask, but Reviews will only be posted after all the pending requests are done!.
I will try to be as fair as possible, and will suggest improvements or various tips throughout the review. I'll give every level scores based on Gameplay/ Sound/ Visuals And Replayability, Along with an overall score.
- To Get A Gameplay Grade Of 9 or 10, Try using many various styles of play and if it's an action level, fill it with action. If it's a racing level, make it fast! Basically, The level has to achieve what it sets out to do.
- To Get A Visuals Grade Of 9 or 10, You've got to use materials in effective and new ways, and experiment successfully with different decorations and/or stickers. Don't make all the shapes the same, and try to make the visuals suit the level's feel.
- To Get A Sound Grade Of 9 or 10, Use music and sound effects to your advantage. How about using the editable music, and starting the level with only one instrument playing, and building it up as you go along?
- To Get A Replayability Grade Of 9 or 10, Be sure to add multiple paths or secret hidden areas. These will provide as an incentive for people to replay the level over a few more times.
- To Get An Overall Grade Of 9 or 10, Try combining all of the above effectively! Good Luck!
All reviews will be put in this post, so that you don't have to look through the thread for them. If a level is good, it gets a longer review, If it's bad, It'll get less info in each category. I'll balance out the pros and cons so that no level sounds bad, I don't want to offend xD.

WEEK 1 - (18/04/10) REVIEWS:
Dual Shock - By fenderjt
Fenderjt should be put on some kind of cruelty register. Sackboy gets mercilessly vapourised on at least 5 occasions throughout this level. x3
GAMEPLAY:
The Gameplay in the level reminded me a lot of levels such as the Scientific Island series, With large vehicle sections and various puzzles to be solved, along with interesting use of various glitches. The platforming is pretty basic, but there's a handful of water and paintanator sections throughout the course of the level which keep things interesting. The method through which you pick up the paintanator uses one of the aforementioned glitches. Basically, you jump on a certain spot and recieve a paintanator. While it's interesting, It's also quite fiddly and often results in you dying. Minor Gripe though. Gameplay is good all round.
VISUALS:
Dual Shock Follows a nice funky Purple, blue and white neon theme. Decorations such as pipes and those purple plant thingys are used well and the materials are also all appropriate to the level's general feel. Lighting is used nicely and helps boost the level's style. Despite all the niceness, the visuals are weak in some places and a feew objects look a bit awkward.
SOUND:
All the right sound effects and neccessary music changes are here, nothing much else to report on.
REPLAYABILITY:
There are no real hidden secrets or multiple pathways, but like the Scientific Island levels, you play it over again because of it's looks and the impressive tricks used.
OVERALL RESULTS:
A Fairly all round level
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 8/10
Sounds: 8/10
Replayability: 7/10
OVERALL: 8/10

Tactical Mission H4 - By warlord_evil
This is seriously under-rated and under-played. Uses the Metal Gear pack to it's full potential.
GAMEPLAY:
Tactical Mission H4 Places you in a sinister level making facility which has been using more power recently than usual. You have to find out why. I love plots that break the 4th wall. The gameplay is great, although the story is a little confusing if you don't read the description. TMH4 is a stealthy affair up until half way through, you have to hide in small holes to avoid lights and so forth, simple stuff really. But about half way through the level it becomes more of a run 'n' gun. The action is faced paced and the platforming is quick and easy. The boss fight towards the end is somewhat awkward and annoying though. This could probably be fixed by adding more attacks, or spacing out the bomb death ray thing.
VISUALS
This level looks great. Lighting effects are used incredibly well and the factory atmosphere is well put together. Good use of the metal materials and it doesn't overcomplicate things. While it's not exactly nothing we've never seen before, I didn't find a problem with the visuals at all.
SOUND:
Sound is used extremely well in this level. warlod_evil has made sure that sounds which are meant to be distant, sound distant. The music suits the level perfectly and changes at all the right times. Good use of the Metal Gear Sound effects and music.
REPLAYABILITY:
There aren't any secret paths or much that you'll miss on the first playthrough, but you'll probably find yourself playing this level again once or twice due to it's plain awesomeness.
OVERALL:
Nice Gameplay And Visuals
Gameplay: 9/10
Visuals: 9/10
Sound: 8/10
Replayability: 7/10
OVERALL: 8/10

Retro Retribution - Level 1 - By shebhnt
A Level That Takes You Back To Good Old 16-Bit Sonic
GAMEPLAY:
Retro Retribution Follows a pretty neat and cutesy storyline; It's a nice day in LittleBigPlanet, until some Eggman-esque bad guy comes along and turns everything 2d. It's a nice concept, and another level that breaks the 4th wall, which is always great. The platforming is fun and features multiple paths for you to explore. The boss fight is a little easy and could've been improved, but all round the gameplay is fun. Shame the level is so short though. I question the Mario pipe at the end of a Sonic-y level too xD
VISUALS:
The visuals are a mixed bunch, In some places, Like for the majority of the Retro section, the visuals look nice and suitable for the type of level it is, The cut-outs are well done and the Environments look good, making nice use of the Sonic kit. However, the beggining of the level has generic hills and a city landscape, and doesn't provide too much that's interesting to look at. Could probably be fixed by adding more materials to make it look more realistic. The main Boss is well designed and although the creatures are basic, they're appropriate to the surroundings and the level's theme.
SOUND
The music is chosen as well as it can be in a 16-Bit level, shame there's no retro music in LBP. I did notice a lack in sound effects though, which could easily be fixed.
REPLAYBILITY:
As I said, this level features a few different paths, and seeing them all is an incentive to play through the level more than once, however, one route is a lot more interesting that the other, and that could be balanced out.
OVERALL:
A fun 16-Bit level with a cool story, the rating could easily be improved with a few minor tweaks
GAMEPLAY: 7/10
VISUALS: 7/10
SOUND: 7/10
REPLAYABILITY: 8/10
OVERALL: 7/10

(20/04/10) REVIEWS:

When The Bombs DIDN'T Fall - By chuck_18mp
Breaks The 4th Wall, Again. If It wasn't so awesome, I'd be tired of it by now x3
GAMEPLAY:
You are in a recycling facility that recycles the bombs that didn't have time to explode in bomb survival levels, And when you leave, some scary girl starts talking to you. It's an awesome and slightly creepy storyline. As you can probably guess, this level revolves around bombs. The facility finds new ways to make bombs useful (stairs etc.) and the scary girl has built various structures out of bombs, This makes for some pretty awesome platforming and explosions. As with nearly every bomb related level, it can get slightly annoying at times, but that's easy to shake off when you look at the level as a whole. You'll probably spend around 5-10 minutes on this level, depending on if you look for the hidden point bubbles and spaces.
VISUALS:
When The Bombs DIDN'T Fall features a dark, industrial theme in it's looks. The visuals certainly look a lot nicer in the later half of the level than in the start. In the facility itself, there are a few 1 material walls and basic rectangles, but in the later half, the environment is filled with bombs. And bombs loook nice. The character designs are excellent and the materials and such suit the level well, and work with the story quite nicely.
SOUND:
The music is chosen nicely and fits the level's eerie, creepy theme, but there are no sound effects or character voices, which is a shame, but easily fixed.
REPLAYABILITY:
There are hidden areas to find throughout the level, although they're all quite easy to spot and you'll probably notice them on your first playthrough. I played the level through a couple of times to better understand the girl's story though.
OVERALL:
A creepy dark level with a neat story and great visuals
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 8/10
Sound: 5/10
Replayability: 7/10
OVERALL: 8/10

A Land Of Apparent Virtue - By bonner123
I nearly snapped myself in half out of frustration x3
GAMEPLAY:
There is an apparant story in the description of this level, but the setup is never really used in the level, which is ok, because the platforming and puzzle elements are so fun that the lack of story doesn't really distract. As you can probably guess from the opening comment however, This level is hard. I found myself dying so many times over on certain places, not due to the level's fault, but my own. The level is really nothing like it, but the difficulty reminded me of Megaman for some reason. The puzzle elements to this level are strong, except the puzzle right at the beggining can seem impossible for 3 or 4 minutes, until you realise the plain and simple solution. I read on the level showcase that this problem had been bugging other users too, and perhaps making the solution more obvious would be a smart move. While the difficulty of this level may deter the less experienced players (You n00bs!) those looking for a challenge will find a barrel filled with monkeys' worth of fun here.
VISUALS
The visuals in this level are a mix of different styles and materials. The first section is a forest. Made with sponge and metal, oddly enough. But I was warned prior to playing that the visuals are meant to be quirky, and in that knowledge, they seem much better. The second section is a sky temple/city place, and the stone structures are well designed and oddly suit being on top of the clouds.
SOUND:
The music in A Land Of Apparent Virtue is suitable to the vibe and creativity of the level, and most of the impact triggered sound effects match the object they're attached to.
REPLAYABILITY:
There aren't any hidden pathways that I found to mention, and the difficulty of the level may put you off of playing a second or third time.
OVERALL:
A Quirky And Fun (And also somewhat difficult) challenge
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 8/10
Sound: 9/10
Replayability: 6/10
OVERALL: 8/10

M.I.B. INfiltrating & OUTgunning - By CalebJThe1st
This level confused the poop out of me
GAMEPLAY:
The story here is pretty amusing. You're an inhabitant of LittleBigPlanet, and you have been sent to Earth to find people for your little friend who flies around in a spaceship to probe, However, before long you're captured by the M.I.B. (Yeah, Men In Black. I hated those movies too). The dialouge throughout the level is pretty funny too. The level starts after a pretty cool looking opening scene, introducing the level and the Author as you fly across in your little Spacecraft. When you gain control, you're in a rather unattractive looking forest and have to do a little big of pretty cool platforming. Otherwise, the level generally involves running around, shooting immobile and trying to find the occasionally difficult-to-locate path. I went the wrong way more than once, ending up in some pretty stuck situations (After the awkward Boss fight near the Janitor for example). When you can find the correct path however, the gameplay is generally quite fun, shooting various targets and eliminating various threats. There's also some nice use of glitches during a Training Zone section of the level.
VISUALS:
This level is a really odd one for visuals, as some parts look great, and some parts look pretty lifeless. As I mentioned earlier, the forest environment that you start the level in looks quite dull and plain. This could be fixed by something as simple as placing stickers on the background and using more patches of different materials throughout. The house toward the end of the forest looks quite nice too. But it's when you get into the M.I.B. HQ however, things start to look really quite nice in places, especially the lift in the training zone. Overall, The effects used aren't exactly mind blowing, but they get the job done.
SOUND:
The music used in most places is well picked, however the music in the forest section doesn't really suit the empty feel of the place, and the only sound effects come from enimies.
REPLAYABILITY:
There really isn't all that much incentive to go and play this again. No multiple paths and a linear Level design stop this from probably getting more than one play.
OVERALL:
Definately room for improvement, But a funny level nonetheless
Gameplay: 7/10
Visuals: 6/10
Sound: 6/10
Replayability: 5/10
OVERALL: 6-7/10

Week 2 - (25/04/10) REVIEWS:

Colorz - By x_KaBOomx
Some Frustrating Parts, But All Round A Nice Platformer.
GAMEPLAY:
This level has no story or real atmosphere, It's just a nice colourful platformer. It's nothing new, but what it does is capture all the best parts of LBP and throws them into one level. There are plenty of jumping, grabbing and running sections, which all hold together nicely and are all shown in a nice colourful environment. My only real complaints with the gameplay is that it's possible to get stuck without the lift right at the start of the level, which could easily be fixed by making the grab switch on the arrow in the elevator "Directional". The game can also get very frustrating too, especially after the section where you swing over the glass using the handle. Otherwise, it really does encapsulate what makes LBP fun.
VISUALS:
As I've said, this level follows a nice, vibrant colourful theme. It's been done before plenty of times, but the level adds enough twists on the concept to make it interesting. The stars in the background, the zig-zaggy lines and the co-ordination of the colours are all well done and deserve to be seen.
SOUND:
The happy, jumpy music definately suits the all round feel the level gives off, and the use of bouncy sound effects helps this along too. Sound effects may be overused in some sections though, and maybe could be distributed around a little better
REPLAYABILITY:
While the more frustrating parts of the level may keep you away from playing multiple times, there are "Bubble Booths" Scattered around the level for some extra points. Also features a 2 Player challenge
OVERALL:
A Sweet, Bouncy, And Occasionally Annoying Platformer.
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 7/10
Sound: 8/10
Replayability: 8/10
OVERALL: 8/10

Color Gardens - By Shhabbazz
A cool, If confusing level
GAMEPLAY:
This level is a platformer at heart. Set around a dark, mysterious garden, you find out the story along the way. This level serves as more of an introduction to something bigger which is coming, I think. The platforming is strong, If made a little difficult at times by the visuals. It's hard to write about the gameplay of a level that is more visually oriented, So I'll move onto that.
VISUALS:
The visuals are interested and certainly unique. The lighting is used superbly well and highlights just how lights can be used effectively in LBP. That platforms are shrouded by dark, and the pathways are lit perfectly for you to romp through this colourful world. Every single layer is used well to present the level and to improve the general experience. The odd pieces of character design are very well done, and suit the level just how they should do. (Also uses the 3D layer glitch nicely). My only real complaint is that the visuals do sometimes get in the way iof the level, making it a bit hard to navigate at some points.
SOUND:
Color Gardens doesn't really feature too many sounds, or much music, but what it does choose is nice and effective.
REPLAYABILITY:
I'm not sure you'd really want to play this level through again and again, but if a sequel is released, then I can see people playing this again to understand the opening of the storyline.
OVERALL:
A unique, nice looking Platformer.
Gameplay: 7/10
Visuals: 9/10
Sound: 7/10
Replayability: 7/10
OVERALL: 8/10

(28/04/10) - REVIEWS
Crypt's Canyon - By Dr_Vab
Dr_Vab, Also Known As That Guy Who Made The Insanely Awesome Unfair Platformer Levels.
GAMEPLAY:
I was lucky, in that this was literally the last level I'd played before checking this thread and seeing that I had to review it. Crypt's Canyon is (obviously) a Canyon based adventure following a simple, but cool storyline. You are in Crypt's Canyon, and you must finish what your Dad started. You've got to locate "The Lost Scrolls Of Cetza" apparantly. Crypt's Canyon is a platformer, as most levels are, and you've got to navigate through tunnels, around weird-a** spiders and over some of the classic "R1 to grab and launch" cannons. (That's what I call them, pretty catchy, huh?), so there's a lot of variety. The core gameplay is good and backed up more by the storyline pulling you through the level. It's nice to know why you're in these Canyons and what your purpose is.
VISUALS:
Visually, Crypt's Canyon looks just how you'd expect a canyons level to look, except darker. The thin front layer is used well by adding different materials and the corner editor tool has been used effectively on the various environments. The creature design is a bit meh, but otherwise, a good looking level.
SOUND:
The music all works well, despite the fact that it's PotC Pack music and sound effects are used where they should be. Good marks here.
REPLAYABILITY:
No hidden paths or challenges that I came across, but as soon as the sequel's out (I'm not spoiling anything, it says To Be Continued at the end of the level) then it might provide some incentive to play again.
OVERALL:
An awesome, interesting platformy level
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 8/10
Sound: 8/10
Replayability: 7/10

Interloper - By FertileDecline
A heavily story based action level
GAMEPLAY:
As the opening comment says, this level is highly based on it's story, and fortunately, the story is a good one. It's really too hard to explain, so I'll let the level do it instead. Despite the story-logged gameplay, there is still a lot of action and platforming to be found here, jumping around an almost deserted planet and shooting various enemies is fun and the level really gives off a wholesome, complete feel. Like best of Both bread, only it's an LBP level. The enemies were a bit tricky to kill though...
VISUALS:
The visuals in the level aren't mindblowing, but they are good, and feature some nicely decorated environments and some strange character design. The visuals definately suit the dark, mysterious theme of the level. At a couple of points, you can see the level's floor though, which is a bit off.
SOUND:
The same, however, cannot be said for the sounds, which frequently seem out of place and a bit odd. For example, your Boss is a Dog, and as you're walking through a town full of flesh-eating-virus infected people, Left Bank Two Is playing, I mean, wha-!? The sound really does distract from the general experience at some points. That said, some of the music is well chosen and works with that section of gameplay.
REPLAYABILITY:
There aren't many secrets or multiple paths to mention, but the immersive storyline may make you want to play again once or twice.
OVERALL:
A story based platform action level.
Gameplay: 8/10
Visuals: 8/10
Sound: 5-6/10
Replayability: 7/10
OVERALL: 8/10

Week 3 - (02/05/10) REVIEWS (General Layout Change)

"DON'T PUSH THAT RED BUTTON" - By DJ_Krimzon
An amusing level that is really hard to review.
GAMEPLAY:
This level is an LBP adaptation of that Popular internet game/ iPhone app where there's a red button which tells you not to press it. When you press it, it keeps telling you not to and so on. So yeah, the gameplay here revolves around hitting a button. Sounds a bit boring, but it's really not.
8/10
VISUALS:
The visuals could have been a little better considering that it's a fairly simple level, however the visual style does stay true to the Original game.
7/10
SOUND:
You might be playing this level for a while, so fortunately, there's a choice of music on offer. The music is appropriate, and the sound effects that are used later into the level add more humour and charm.
9/10
REPLAYABILITY:
This level is being updated all the time, so there's more to see each time you play, which is good reason to come back. Otherwise though, not much going on here.
7/10
OVERALL:
A level which needs to be played to be understood. Go over there and hit that button like a man.
8/10

Thanks a bunch for the review!
The funny thing about its look, is that the first part was made like 7 months ago and I got inspired to continue it lately, so of course, I learned a lot since the past 7 months, so this is why it looks better in the latter part. As for the sounds, I wasn't really into them 7 months ago and I don't feel like working on them right now too. Maybe we'll see a new version? i don't know...
Thanks again for reviewing it

Kind of afraid to ask for a review for my level since it's so old (originally posted at the end of 2008 and hardly modified at all since then) so it's probably aged, but i guess it doesn't hurt.

Name: Zack's Revenge Ep. 1: Narius' Attack
Creator : Senkoy

It's very story heavy. You can go to the right to skip it or move left to visit the town. Over 200 dialog boxes used so if you don't like story levels then it might not be for you.

THE INVASION OF HELGHAN

It's called "THE INVASION OF HELGHAN" so more people will want to play it because Killzone 2 is popular. Your part of a invading international Earth force landing on the northern snowy part of Helghan. You will start up being the gunner of the gunship that is preparing to land. There are alot of enemiesand tanks but you got the painternator and a Mighty Mite tank. This is a GREAT level for 4 PLAYERS, because with teamwork it can be alot of fun.

Can my level be reviewed too? It's called "ZOMG! Survive the Zombie Takeover!" I promise it will at least be worth your time to play it.2010-05-23 23:22:00

Sorry to all you guys awaiting reviews, I haven't been overly active lately and can't promise I will in the coming weeks, so I'm not sure how many I'll get done.

If your still reviewing levels then could you maybe review my level Beasts of the Baron please? its under the username of Smudge228 if you can't find it and features lots of exiting battles. the three people who have commented on my thread about it have left very positive feedback so far so I dont mind if you tell me bad stuff ;P2010-06-01 19:18:00

I just want to point out that Skeggers is no longer active here. So don't be surprised if you don't get a review.2010-06-11 22:41:00

I'd also like to point out that I will be coming back eventually, so all these accumulating reviews will get done at some point. I've subscribed to the thread, so I know there's quite a few I need to get done. Thanks for understanding.2010-06-12 10:17:00
