Sackievania - WIP

For my first level I wanted to base the setting off of the Castlevania games. So thinking about vampires and sucking blood I thought up a quick little storyline to poke at H4H levels

Level Description

Threatened by the oncoming darkness, you embark on a journey to rid LittleBigPlanet of Count Sackula. Stealing the hearts of sackpeople and replacing them with his own, Count Sackula aims to create a mindless army of heartless ghouls that threaten to take over and rid the planet of life.

Do you dare face the darkness?

Fight zombies, skeletons, bats, and Count Sackula himself in this free-roaming platforming adventure.

... yeah, good luck, free roaming levels are hard to make, especially like this, but it'd be awesome if done right :kz:

Are you going to have different power ups or just find different switches to open doors? How about combat? just platforming? Secret rooms with huge rewards? Ooh, the possibilites are endless... except for thermo.

Heh, everyone loves those guys.

I know its going to be hard for sure, but for me if it isn't hard, its not worth doing.

I'm still fleshing it out (gloomy day today) and have been on and off with power ups and how to include them. For sure I will have switches but would love to have some sort of power up system.

Combat for sure, and the first creature you fight will the typical rising zombie.

Secret rooms (and turkey) in the walls make Castlevania. I got lots of those in there

It ain't Castlevania (or an homage thereof) without Death. Heck, it wouldn't even be that hard to simulate his fighting style with some emitters set to shoot out sickles at you.
There are actually a few Castlevania LBP levels I've stumbled across, many of which try to simulate Symphony of the Night in particular but few really capture the feel of the games. Like RockSauron said, a freeroaming level akin to the more recent "Metroidvania" style Castlevanias would be hard to do. Personally, I'd recommend making multiple levels based of stages of the old-school Castlevanias (Clock Tower, Castle Keep, etc.) with bosses at the end of each of them. Long-term project I know, but all the great LBP levels usually are.

Death is def. a great idea and I've put him into the design as a boss along with Legion.

I'm going to be using a system where players use Sigils (aka pretty sticker) to activate sticker switches, unless there's another way to go about it. I don't want to do grabbable sigils, as its impossible to drag em around. Each Sigil has its own power (Destruction, Time, and Telekinetic) collected throughout the castle.

The locations are going to be the Entrance/Outer Wall, Clock Tower, and the Long Library. I'm gonna wait and see how my thermo is before deciding to go straight to Sackula or make a Pt2. Either way I would love to make this a series.

I've got the layout pretty much done and have started building some level assets and the beginning of the level. I'll post some pics soon.

Well that sounds great, hopefully it's... GOOD

Also, if it IS a series, you could make it so there re stickers in later levels that unlock stuff in earlier levels, and hidden stickers in earlier ones that affect later ones... yeah.

Well I hope it's good

It's for sure going to be a series. I already have a few Sigil ideas for part 2 so I will definetly be implementing them into the previous parts.

The level is about 40% done. I'm going to finish fleshing out the main blocks of the level then go through and do some more finer detail work with the rest of the thermo.
