Well, I can personally say I don't know ANYONE like this. But, then.... if they picked normal everyday adults the show wouldn't be interesting, would it? Of course, I think this clearly indicates what Americans are ENTERTAINED BY - which is a bit sad.2010-04-17 14:58:00

Is it acceptable for a parent to do their child's homework? I'd have thought that's illegal/the kind of thing that would get you expelled yet the mother is acting to the cam as if it's something to be proud of, ooh I got 100+.. of course you did your an adult who has had probably thousands of years to learn that stuff, haggard old wretch! She looks wrong with all that make up plastered on, really quite scary. Surely the teachers could notice a difference in how the daughter performs in class and the standard of the homework.. unless they get paid off or something which wouldn't surprise me. It's hilariously sad to think these people exist, the daughter would be absolutely hopeless without her parents. Also, what the.. with the bag? LOL seriously if anyone went around with their own face on their bags around here I can only imagine the consequences/ reactions from others and I'm sure that applies almost everywhere except in the bubble this family lives.2010-04-17 15:44:00

I'm pretty sure you can find people like that in any country. I dunno why you'd be watching a show like this for examples of American normality.

I think the fact that we're appalled by this demonstrates its entertainment value. The producers know exactly what they're doing.

That woman says "sparkle" wayyy too much. And that girl Kaylan is smarter than everyone in that 'sparkle' family. It's kind of sad.2010-04-17 16:19:00

For one of the families, yes. It's sad though because the child that has their parents doing their work can't even spell America properly and lacks basic grammar skills.

I hate reality television in America. It makes us all look like idiots. We are not. I'm convinced those people on those shows are told to act that way, because otherwise there wouldn't be any drama and people wouldn't continue to watch it. It's a perfect example of why the only show on television I watch is Top Gear, which is not even an American program.2010-04-17 17:35:00

Wow! You watch Top Gear also? cool!!

Yeah.. I cannot stand reality tv. I think not only are they told to act that way, but purposely find the worst people that could never get along with anyone and pay them to really go all out. I just don't see how that really ends up being on tv at all...

So to answer the OP's question, no... most people you meet are really pretty nice. Not that someone doesn't do something silly once in awhile that makes the news, but you would have to pay someone I think to be as silly as those you find on those shows.

I mostly watch racing which I consider the ultimate brand of reality tv. My girlfriend enjoys some of those cooking competitions on food network. Those are pretty interesting actually. I'm not really a cook, but at least they are doing something creative.

@jww: oh yeah, top gear's probably one of the best things on television right now. And I guess there is one reality show that I like. I watch Ghost Hunters. But other than that, I really don't watch anything else but the office, top gear and america's funniest home videos. Although, you know, if you really want to see americans doing stupid things, watch america's funniest home videos. 2010-04-17 18:36:00

A few years ago, an American comedian named Dave Chapelle had a show called "Chapelle's Show" which was both brilliantly offensive and too good to last due to the dumb fans and meddling executives who ended up irritating Dave so much he left in disgust.
One of the skits on his show was "Trading Spouses" which was meant to poke fun at the current trend of reality TV at the time. It was supposed to be a parody but I guess life really does imitate art...

Yea, no one wants to see something they see everyday, that's why they find these disturbing people for the show. "Reality" TV here is basically a broadcasted freak show 2010-04-18 03:45:00

I see what you all mean. This is why I hate most American television programmes that are meant to be funny or interesting eg.reality tv. Most American comedies don't seem to understand subtlety in humour. Ah well, that's just my opinion...2010-04-18 03:53:00

There are worse in America, just watch a VH1 reality show...
Anyway, they're both rather crazy. I've never liked parents who force their children into pageants or such a radical lifestyle. Also, I think the pageant queen is pretty gross. There's something incredibly...odd about her face. It isn't that it's ugly, it's just weird, I've never seen such a face on a human. Her mouth is really big, or maybe it's her voice. She's just strange looking. Feminism, on the other hand, just scares me. When you take feminism to the extent that this family has taken it, it's just weird. I don't think you have to live such a different lifestyle to teach women that they can be as capable as men. They should be teaching equality imo.

Also, this is pretty unrelated, but couldn't pageant queens be considered feminists as well? They manipulate using their feminism.

ALSO, on the subject of American TV, don't try and deny that this is genius television. Get two people living opposite, radical, abnormal lifetsyles to switch houses for a week. That's just entertaining to me.

Yeah, exactly. It's not like this show's concept is
"Here's two ordinary American families, let's mix them up!"
it's
"Here's two really ****ed up American families, let's see how ridiculous we can make this!"

It's really trashy but that's totally the point, and it's hilarious.

Yes, I remember. Horrible show. A guy I used to work with was in the audience a couple of times, just for the fun of it. He said it was the craziest experience of his life. Not too sure why he wanted to experience it...especially twice.

The word both those families need to learn is BALANCE. Far out. That pageant princess is in for a hard life once her looks start to deteriorate. How's she going to make a living? As for the Boss woman... I believe in women being educated and strong and self-reliant but you don't need to be anti-everything-else in order to raise girls like that. Men and women need each other. I feel for her husband.

Sara and jww, we watch Top Gear too. As a family.. lol!

edit - Just saw the Jerry Springer refs... yes, I've seen that show twice only. I found it to be a festival of the crass, psychotic and perverted. A complete waste of a couple of hours of my life. I have it on good authority that many of his 'Guests' are paid stooges/actors. Figures.

And Maury!
The best stuff to watch when I'm home sick! I love topless trailer trash and paternity tests

You can't argue that it isn't entertaining.

I think a lot of you are really missing the point of this breed of television.

Is this REALLY how you think all americans are?

The reality shows on tv pick the worst possible people on purpose. It doesn't represent who we are at all. in fact, 99 percent of the time, it's the complete opposite of what we are. I've honestly never met anyone that is even remotely like the people on these shows. I can't stand american reality tv.

On another note, I watch Ghost Hunters too D: I like those kind of shows ( Ghost hunters, Ghost adventures, Destination truth, etc etc.)
Although I wouldn't classify them as reality shows.

The stereotype is more like Americans are loud, opinionated, insular, arrogant, unsubtle and juvenile.

I can only attest to the loud bit.

oh, come on... i go online and even on a forum like this, i see people assuming complete justification over a whole country based on few observations. that nine minute youtube video shows two lives of insane people who happen to live here. if they weren't insane, there wouldn't be a video, and the show would be less interesting. each country has their share of craziness, but i don't see why so many people stress it on america though.2010-04-21 13:18:00

Haha my first reaction was that this kind of seems like a parody of reality shows, and that was kinda worth a chuckle. Reality niche is a sad thing in general.

But of course it's all just staged art thou insane? No, normal families are not like this anywhere.

Ha! These are the only two reality shows I will watch too (my buddies have virtually disowned me over the Project Runway thing, but oh well). They are not the typical reality show formula. Yes, sometimes there's a bit of contrived drama, but 95% of the drama is real and is based on their abilities to create a quality product with their God-given talents. The rest of American reality television is mind-numbing garbage and plays to the lowest common denominator of both their subjects and their audiences. They are a plague on modern society.

Several people have mentioned the entertainment value - I don't see it. What I do see (I have a friend whose brother is a reality TV producer in LA) is that the networks and producers LOVE them. They can afford to have them utterly fail because the overhead on them is next to nothing... no writers, no sets or design staff, and no expensive actors. Just people who crave their 15 minutes, as promised by Mr. Warhol. And the more that the dull-witted American public consumes them as "entertainment" the more they approve and produce. It's like a disease.

The stereotype is more like Americans are loud, opinionated, insular, arrogant, unsubtle and juvenile.Yeah - I actually have no argument here.
